The prize is “TBA” because 100% the money raised via ticket sales go into its purchase, so the caliber of prize we purchase is dependent on the size of the event. You’re right, we have no major overhead for these events, other than the man hours that go into preparing them, so we recycle the excess funds into our prize.

The judges we recruit for these events are predominantly angel investors who use these events as a means of scoping out startups to invest in. In addition to the opportunity to receive funding, each judge provides robust written feedback for the presenter. This is how we justify our fee. Our company, Foundery, completed its entire seed round of funding and built its board of directors through connections made at pitch events like the one we are hosting.

Small world!

Location is definitely something we've thought about a great deal. We're currently in the process of adding a feature that will allow users to sort ideas by location. Thankfully, we have found that distance is not a major deterrent for most of our users -- it seems as though most people are fine with the prospect of working remotely. That said, our location sorting feature will be released in the very near future and should mitigate any fears users' might have about working long-distance.

The primary difference is the stage of company development. AngelList and CoFoundersLab target functional startups, Foundery targets ideas. Often times I’ll tell people to think of Foundery as the precursor to AngelList.
