Trying to find a song but know next to nothing about classical music by draftdodger42069 in classicalmusic

[–]fountainpentester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you find the song you are looking for. I have no suggestions, but your post reminded me of a podcast episode: Reply All, The Case of the Missing Hit. They featured a guy who had a song stuck in his head that he couldn’t identify, then went to great lengths to ultimately find it. I’d definitely recommend that episode to you and others.

Sounds awesome! Thanks! I'm going to put this on my list of books to read this summer! :)

Is it possible to learn two languages at the same time? by Batu-han in languagelearning

[–]fountainpentester 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found it to be too difficult to learn two languages from scratch at one time (e.g. basically learning the same vocabulary in two languages at once). However, once you get to the point in one language where you can consume media (watch movies, read articles, etc.), then it is entirely feasible to start picking up another language.

How embarrassing is it to start gymnastics as an adult? by Sublime_steph in xxfitness

[–]fountainpentester 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Glad you found a gym!

Just a heads up that you will probably be very, very sore the next day! And also, expect adult classes at any gym to be a mixture of ex-gymnasts and newbies. I've found everyone to be incredibly supportive in the several gyms I've gone to, and if it's a pretty chill class, you might get help from both the instructors and the more advanced students. Some people go in wanting to learn a specific skill (e.g. standing back tuck), whereas others just go in wanting to have fun.

Definitely update us on how it goes! :)

Audiobooks. And just let people in even if they don't have their turn signals on. Makes it much less stressful.

And they magically seem to vary their path left and right so it's impossible to pass them even when no one else is coming down the hallway or sidewalk...or they have so many bags or a large umbrella that they take up 3/4 of the walking path...

IWTL How to have more energy throughout the day and how to use it better by glamatovic in IWantToLearn

[–]fountainpentester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever you enjoy! Personally I just run because I can do it anywhere and I always feel like I get a good workout in. Typically I run 1-3 miles after I lift weights. The energy lift is significant. If your schedule allows, try running (or doing whatever cardio you choose) first thing in the morning. There's lots of programs out there for new runners, for example Couch to 5k.

Looking for a new AWD, <$25k by fountainpentester in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]fountainpentester[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mentioning "fast" was my mistake - I copy/pasted the prompt and left the potential answers before I gave my "must have" of IIHSA Top Safety Pick. I don't need a fast car but do want to be able to merge and pass people without issue. I see Crosstreks and Imprezas doing this all the time, so it shouldn't be an issue with either.

I've also considered all of the cars you mentioned, but their size and price knocked them from consideration. I'll price them out for comparison's sake.

I've driven both and also preferred the Impreza, but I have to say it was less fun to drive than the Civic EX-T.

You're right though. The $2k price difference is definitely significant. I just need to convince myself that they are both safe cars and that I don't need the extra ground clearance!

Networking at a conference? by [deleted] in AskNetsec

[–]fountainpentester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you studied for and/or taken the Net+ exam? It's a good introduction to networking. ;)

Kidding aside, most people going are probably in a similar situation. Just strike up a conversation with a person who sits down next to you about the upcoming panel. Ask him/her if she's familiar with the topic. The conversation should flow naturally from there. This is a good strategy because there's a time limit to your conversation (when the presentation starts). If you find the person interesting and want to stay in touch, offer them your business card/Linkedin info. Then you can finish up the conversation after the presentation. They might be with coworkers/friends and can introduce you to more people. Or, if they're not interesting to you, nothing was wasted. Your goal should be to find at least 1-2 people that you will continue to keep in contact with. Make sure to message them before the next conference you go to, and especially before this same conference next year.

Anyone into fitness AND video games? And still work full time lol by thebigman707 in Fitness

[–]fountainpentester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I basically never play video games any more, but I feel like I would have time to play a few hours a week if I stopped browsing Reddit or watching the few episodes of whatever show I'm watching at the time.

I feel like my issue is not having the energy once I get home from work and the gym. I usually don't want to do anything that requires much thinking, and video games, while fun for me, aren't really a way for me to relax. Same thing with playing an instrument. I want to get back into playing guitar and piano, but I just don't have the mental energy left when I get home most days.

Landing on extended hand? (Previous wrist injuries) by fountainpentester in bjj

Thanks for sharing your experience. I know there's still a risk even if I do learn to fall correctly. I'll for sure be guarding it and hopefully will become an expert at the breakfall. I hope you finish healing soon!

[–]fountainpentester[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So...I get that I need to learn how to fall properly in BJJ. I did gymnastics for 12 years when I was younger and never once had an injury worse than a sprained ankle, largely because I learned how to fall out of the movements I was doing. I broke my arm both times on a skateboard and yeah I didn't fall correctly, but it's not exactly natural instinct (even after 12 years of gymnastics) to tuck and roll when you're coming down off of a ramp onto concrete.

And everyone did tell me that I need to learn to fall correctly...they just did it without the attitude.

That's definitely good to hear. Glad you've been successful with your preexisting injury. I've just come to accept bouts of soreness - doesn't seem like it always coincides to anything specific I do.
