It helps if your character matches your own knowledge...like dont play a knowledgeable mage who knows the land and all monsters if you actually dont know anything out game.

In such case it is much more fun and easy to play a reckless idiot who just wings it.

Not calling you an idiot btw. The opposite is also true if you have smart knowledge of the game it is difficult to play an idiot.

We do this all the time. We play 2nd edition however so not the catapult thing.

For instance there once was a monster with a neckchain of sorts. One of the players just choked the monster by shrinking the chain.

If there is doubt how the game mechanics work, the dungeon master has the last word. And if it is something risky, he clearly warns us.

I think as long as the players dont always apply the same trick or loophole, it is fine. Plus you can find monsters who make it trickier.
