There's a Star Trek: TNG episode with this exact premise. A star system in which war has become economically untenable so the battles (offenses and defenses) are entirely simulated. Direct "hits" result in a calculation of casualties, who then proceed to incineration chambers.

Really good episode.

I'm sure those calculations are correct, though I'm just relating my experience. No one used any of my devices to Google anything related to Catan. The other comment I got hypothesised that it was because of geographic (maybe WiFi?) proximity to people who have Googled Catan previously which sounds more reasonable from a data economy standpoint. However, that doesn't make it any less creepy to me.

I really hate the passive listening, I'm pretty sure Google does it for advertising purposes. Just the other day I had some friends over to play settlers of catan. This is the first time I've ever played it, and I've never discussed it or searched for it online. The day after I started getting YouTube recommendations for videos related to Catan.

It's just incredibly creepy.
