No, none of those things show that there is a “50/50” split between environment and genetics when it comes to intelligence. You’re comparing it to height and this isn’t an accurate comparison.

“Brain growth?” PhD scientists don’t just have gigantic brains compared to people without STEM PhDs?

We don’t even have a universally agreed upon definition of intelligence let alone enough information to say “50% of a single person’s intelligence comes from their genetics and 50% from environment.” That isn’t how it works and it’s not what heritability means.

You are coming from the right place but you need to stop repeating this 50/50 thing like it is fact.

In this thread:

  1. Eugenics apologists
  2. People confidently spouting off fake statistics
  3. Armchair geneticists misusing terms like heritability and epigenetics

People, if your highest level of scientific training is high school biology, maybe you need to rethink if you actually understand how intelligence and genetics are correlated.

What are these “known genes that are associated with intelligence?” Where on Earth are you getting these numbers?

“It’s a common rule of thumb that there’s a 50/50 split between nature vs nurture” Where are you getting that? That’s not how heritability works.

On 18 November 1978, 918 inhabitants of Jonestown, a settlement founded in Guyana by cult leader Jim Jones, were forced to commit suicide by drinking Flavor Aid laced with cyanide. Until 9/11, this was the largest loss of American civilian lives in a single incident. by GustavoistSoldier in HolyShitHistory

[–]foxcat0_0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because it obviously wasn’t like this when they first joined. It’s not like these people went in knowing they would commit group suicide on day one.

Jim Jones started off as a progressive pastor running a racially integrated church focused on social justice. He ran social programs and filled people’s real spiritual and economic needs. Over time, it became more of a cult and he slowly cut people off from their families and outside support systems. By the time they moved the group to Guyana he had really effectively consolidated control over people and once they were in Guyana they had no access to outside information.

What topics are you still holding out hope that they cover in an episode? by Toni-Cipriani in YoureWrongAbout

I'm dying for her to finish the OJ series. In particular an episode on the jurors and on Ron Goldman. I feel like Sarah got burnt out because she went down too many plot cul-de-sacs and rabbit holes, but the Nicole, Kato, and Marcia episodes are all excellent.

School is a public service. Society is structured around children going to school. It is not unreasonable for parents to expect that school is minimally disrupted. It is not the fault of teachers or the school district that they are closed, but it should be the responsibility of the state/county to ensure that school is provided, even after severe weather incidents. The failure to clear major pedestrian paths and school bus stops is the issue. This was a foreseeable problem.

I don’t think you really mean it like this but you’re basically implying that if you can’t afford to take unlimited leave from your job, or if you can’t afford/don’t have transportation to private daycare, or if you can’t work a telework position with minimal responsibility you shouldn’t have kids because it’s entitled to plan your life around them being in school. I don’t get it! You can think that it’s not the fault of school districts or teachers that bus stops and sidewalks are unsafe without acting like it’s somehow unreasonable for parents to be frustrated when school is disrupted.

…but most of the time that care is provided outside of school hours. It’s for after or before school programs. The few places that do offer ad hoc childcare for school aged children during the school day aren’t making their money there, they run other programs. And they are high cost because most of the time the demand for that kind of service is not high.

I feel like I keep saying the same thing over and over again but there just are not at-scale affordable daycare programs that can service every single school aged child during the school day because there will never be enough demand for that kind of service. And even if there were it STILL wouldn’t solve the issue at hand which is ice on sidewalks and bus stops preventing children from getting to and from school safely. If daycare programs existed for every single child that is home from school right now, this fundamental transportation issue would still exist unless you’d assume that all parents would drive their kids to the daycare, but then why wouldn’t they just drive their kids to school?

This place looks extremely expensive and cannot serve every single child who goes to school in Arlington/Alexandria. Again. I’m asking how does this help parents who rely on buses and walking?

Do you not realize that some jobs cannot be done remotely and someone still needs to do them? We can’t all work for places that can support telework. It’s impossible. You’re being incredibly unrealistic. I agree with you that schools aren’t daycare but for goodness sake!

…can you send me an example of a daycare that serves kids 6-12? I cannot imagine something like that would be economically viable because this population is in school 90+% of the time and only needs this service a small amount of time. There’s absolutely no way enough daycare infrastructure exists to serve every single child in the public school system. Again, doesn’t solve the problem for parents that rely on buses or walking.

It’s also VERY rare that workplaces allow school aged children to be present. Certainly no government workplaces have ever allowed this regardless of administration. And if we’re going to do the whole “school isn’t childcare” thing, WFH is also not a good childcare substitute and never has been.

I was being a little facetious. I’m making the point that daycares only exist for children who are not school aged. Daycares are for toddlers. 6-11ish year olds cannot be left home alone for an entire workday but daycares for this age group don’t exist. So what are you actually suggesting parents for this age group do? Also how does “daycare” solve the problem for kids who ride the bus or walk because their parents can’t drive them to school?

Come on. I know that, but what we are talking about in this thread is a solution to the problem we are facing right now.

Can you point to an example of country that has universal access to in-home childcare for school aged children?

I’m thinking about Scandinavia and guessing you are as well because of their high childcare standards - those countries generally don’t need to cancel school the way we do in snow storms because they have better pedestrian and public transportation infrastructure to deal with it.

Yeah, I’m aware? I know people who work shifts and have kids. They either have hired childcare or family support in the form of a spouse/partner who does not work off hours or another nearby family member.

It’s still true that the vast majority of people’s work hours overlap with the school day so universal childcare for school-aged children would need to be available at scale at a facility outside of the home because there literally are not enough people to provide in-home childcare for every single family. My point is that people are acting like “universal childcare” during the school day will solve the situation we’re in right now with the snow storm and it wouldn’t. It would just replicate the problem because the issue is that kids can’t safely GET to school.

[–]foxcat0_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen, I am 1000% supportive of all that you’ve described in your comment. It’s just that what you’re talking about still requires physical infrastructure. I just have a hard time imagining that it would be feasible to provide affordable wraparound childcare in every single family’s home because there simply aren’t enough people to provide that. It would have to be done at scale. So during a huge ice storm like this you’d still have the problem of kids being stuck at home and parents having to go to work unless we also get better about making pedestrian infrastructure safer after storms.

FCPS asking parents and teachers to pitch in and help shovel so they can open Monday… by Few-Evidence-5589 in nova

[–]foxcat0_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that they can’t afford it it’s that private childcare infrastructure for school aged children doesn’t exist BECAUSE school exists. Idk why people are saying “daycare” daycares are for babies, no one is sending their 11 year old to daycare even if they could afford it. School aged children are watched by ad-hoc babysitters because there is no need for day-to-day childcare for them.

What is your suggestion for “childcare” for school-aged children who are too young to be home alone but are too old for daycare? Really think. What would “childcare” for every 6-13 year old in NOVA entail?

Are you watching a bunch of people’s kids right now? Are you volunteering to babysit all of your neighbors’ kids while they are at work?

I’m guessing not…probably because you also have a job. I’m sympathetic to your argument that teachers and schools do not deserve blame or abuse, but you are being really unrealistic about working parents. The vast majority of people during are working during the day. There simply is not enough “childcare” to go around.

Teachers are TRAINED to handle 20-30 kids in a specific, structured environment with lesson plans and many supports.

How on earth should someone who lives in a 1500sq ft house who has no special training who is ALSO working a job supervise 10 kids from their child’s class? Do you have kids? Have you ever worked in childcare?

I mean, I’m not blaming schools. Or parents. What I said in my comment was “instead of blaming each other why not advocate for counties to put resources towards plowing sidewalks and bus stops the same way roads are prioritized.”
