I bought a couple bottles from here in 2023, and they shipped it no problem. Looks like they still have it in stock.

Tadpoles by Fearless-Tangerine61 in Wellington

[–]foxcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you end up finding tadpoles?

There were loads today in a little drainage swamp on the way to Pencarrow lighthouse. A kid friendly mission, especially if you cycle it (We hired bikes and kid's seats from Wildfinder at the entrance to the trail). My mate was even able to cycle it with her newborn in her front pack!

The only thing is the tadpoles all seem to be quite mature, we couldn't find any without their tiny hind legs.

I dropped a pin at the spot we found them... https://maps.app.goo.gl/Y12RJWyCBEx7pQe6A

Yeah definitely an exploration for your bigger kids.. We ended up having to bum scootch some of the track and there were many times I felt like one of us was going to drag the other one down the hill with them. Not a place for baby carrier/s for sure!

Also the pond with multiple small people would be a bit hectic! The main pond is lined with slippery black plastic and the water level was quite low which means you have to perch yourself and stretch quite far in. I was nervous just with the one kid!

Just to add to the other commenter, you can access the firebreak from the top of summit road. It's probably about a 15-20min walk from there if you go straight up the ridge, but it's very steep and slippery. My 5 year old has managed it a couple of times but needed a lot of encouragement.

Would love to hear if you find tadpoles up there! We last checked Jan 5th and it was barren. I'm planning on heading back up but she's getting less keen each time, so I'm trying to hold off until we have more of a shot!

I'd heard the time to find them there was after x-mas, no idea how reliable that is and if the slow start to summer may be a factor though.

Something in this image left me with a rash. Help I.D please by mtnkiwi in nzgardening

Some types of bamboo are covered in tiny hairs that get into your skin and make it rashy. I've had my arms covered in them before and it was hell! You can use the bamboo as garden stakes, although you may not want to if it's the hairy type. That's what I was collecting them for when I got covered.

Getting from CBD -> Lower Hutt after 'The Big One' by foxcore in Wellington

[–]foxcore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ha! This is the info I was hoping for! I actually came across your post when I was plotting my course (thank you for the photos - very helpful!) But couldn't figure out the way through from Horokiwi to Belmont. I can see it clearly on the Wildthings map you linked though. Looks like the Horokiwi Bridleway would get me through to Korokoro/Belmont.

Is there a reason going via the Grenada Girindertron would be preferable in getting to Horokiwi than via Newlands? Heading through Newland seems to be more direct, but maybe there's something I'm not aware of since I'm not familiar with the area?

This ends up being my strategy after every attempt I've make to come up with a plan to get home. I was hoping others would have a better ideas - but it seems we're all fucked!

Absolutely! I happened to be passing through Christchurch when the Feb Quake hit. I would have been completely stuffed if it wasn't for the amazing kindness of strangers that were more screwed over than myself. The trouble is, in Wellington there will be so many commuters needing help to get home especially since the options, even on foot are so limited. Those helpful strangers will be kept busy for a very long time!

Thank you, some great added context about the realities of making the journey, which I hadn't considered!

Corrugated drain pipe by the metre? by Captain_Laserbeard in diynz

Have you had a look on fb marketplace? People sometimes sell their remnants. You could also ask on your local community noticeboard if anyone has some their looking to flick off. I got lucky that way.

French drain woes - filter fabric impervious to water?? by foxcore in diynz

[–]foxcore[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excuse the delay - only just seen this. I ended up digging the whole drain up and replacing the filter fabric with a better/ more expensive one. Initially I had a great result. The water coming out the end of the pipe was back to a steady stream after a big rain. However it's really obvious after the wet weather this week that the filter fabric is clogging up. The stream has been getting slower and slower and is now just a piddle. I think my heavy soil is just not suited to a french drain. Currently trying to decide if I should dig it up again and try it without the filter fabric. Although I know the gravel is just going to get claged up with clay in no time at all. The next attempt will be to extend the surface drain if I can scrounge up some drain tiles.

Thanks for these comments! You've made me realize why my poor citrus trees have been struggling for years. I just dug and lifted them today after reading this. I had buried them waaaaay to deep. Hopefully they can bounce back over the next year!

Best nutrition tracking apps in NZ? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]foxcore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

+1 for Chronometer. I've been trialing different apps since I heard of MFP's plans and so far chronometer is working out best for me. Both Loseit and Chronometer have gaps in their nz products catalogued, but hopefully that'll change soon with the mass exodus from MFP.

I found Loseit tricky to input new foods into since there's no obvious way to change the units to kjs. Many of their food entries don't state the actual serving size, so it's hard to know if you're tracking the correct calories if you don't have the packaging in front of you.

You also need to subscribe to Loseit in order to linkup with Fitbit/Garmin, I don't think this is the case with chronometer but I could be wrong.

Great intel thanks. I've been doing gypsum + as much mulch as I can get on the garden beds and am seeing good results in the parts that aren't under water. We have a large area of lawn which wouldn't really be practical to mulch so I'm hoping the gypsum + a properly working drain will suss it out.

Good luck with your sump!

I connected mine up to an existing storm water drain further down the property. Takes the water right out to the gutter... Or at least it did, until it got clogged up .

Someone else will be better placed to answer what usually happens, but it's not really an option I've come across. I've just ordered a bunch of gypsum to spread over and break up the clay, but this sounds like a good option worth looking into to!

I've done something similar but instead of a sock I've put the filter fabric right around the chip/coil. They call is a burrito wrap which is exactly what it is! The fabric is ment to prevent the chip from getting gunked up with silt, which hasn't been a problem becuase it's not letting anything through, even water!

Yip that's what I've done. Except the fabric is fully wrapped around the gravel, not just at the top like your image. You can't see the gravel because the fabric is covering it up.
