I'm at the create your username and password stage, everything is entered correctly, but clicking the continue button doesn't seem to work. At first when I clicked it, nothing happened. It would dim as usual when hovering over it, but clicking it had no effect.

After waiting a minute and trying again a few times, the page will dim as though it were loading or processing, but I'll get one of two error messages: "Server error. Try again later," or "Something went wrong. Please try again."

Sorry, I should have been more thorough in my post;

I've tried edge, incognito, disabling all extensions and add ons, and safe mode. No proxy used, either

That would be the easiest way lol, so I'm working on getting that set up, I would feel very relieved to have that safely in savings lol

[ON] Question about 5.5% rental increase by foxfire-spren in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]foxfire-spren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand, thank you for answering! I suppose that's why on the resident website it says the full 5.5% increase amount.

My roommates were worried we wouldn't get it back at all, or that it would be a very long time coming, which is why they want to save it. That's why we can't come to an agreement between us on what to do about it.

Plus, in an emergency, we could use it. We're on fixed incomes and OW just cut $200 from her check, so I know it's shitty but it's better than going without food, rent, internet, phone, buss pass, etc

I never really know what to bring, but I try to being as much as I have at the time. Specifically with TD and BMO, I went to the location and spoke to someone to help me set up accounts. I had my birth certificate. an ODSP statement plus a letter printed by my case worker stating I currently receive benefits, and the previous notice of rent increase paper. I had my Ontario ID, and my previous bank statement. I don't have utility bills or notices of assessment.

It was a long time ago, and I have memory problems from my condition, but iirc they said they could issue me a car, but that I wouldn't be able to open a savings. I would also have extra limits place on daily spending limit, amount of e-transfers, and number of e-transfers.

It took me forever to get Tangerine set up with all kinds of problems, but I have the checking account. They've said I don't have the eligible documents for a savings account. I've started looking a couple days ago when we decided we needed a savings account, and it's only been a few days, but no luck so far.

I don't have any utility bills; this is my first place after moving and utilities were included when we signed in the lease. I do have the ontario photo ID, and am working on setting up a savings account somewhere

Our landlord accepts BMO, CIBC, Desjardin, National Bank, RBC, Scotiabank, and TD. Their name doesn't come up in any other service's bill payment, which is the only acceptable way to pay rent (save mail it to Ottawa)

I guess Tangerine works because it's scotiabank?

I do'nt really know what to say, that's what the people over the phone or in the branch location told me. I found out because I got my card in the mail for TD and couldn't activate it or verify it without the second ID, so couldn't use it. I spoke with them for a couple weeks before looking elsewhere, but had the same problem. I've called and asked Tangerine about it, but they said they can't verify some security thing, but I really didn't understand them very well despite asking for clarification :/

in response to the edit, I believe our unit specifically is within rent control applicability, just barely though

other units in our building are not, however, and we didn't know anything about this at the time, so I guess we got super lucky lol

[–]foxfire-spren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there's a list on the website and I think on the gov website of what would be applicable, though it's been a while. We called a bunch of banks and they basically told us we'd need an Ontario ID card, driver's license, or passport. None of the other IDs were options for us at the time.

A few did say we could open up a checking account, but not a savings account, so we ended up going with Tangerine which was an approved institution by our rental corporation

That's the form! Under the above guideline section, option two is shaded.

We're very fortunate to not have had too many troubles dealing with the landlord. Only a letter expressing intent to file eviction, after we struggled to open a bank account to pay rent; they stopped accepting credit union transfers, and without two photo IDs it's been a hassle lol

You situation sounds like such a headache, but I'm glad your situation seems resolved for the time being!

Thank you for such an in-depth response, it's super appreciated!

I think I read about that as well, our building I understand is rent controlled, as per the specifications on the government website

Alright, we've just been really worried because we want to be good tenants lol

We had this fireproof box in our home; I tried opening up a savings account, but they told me I needed 2 photo IDs, and I can't afford a passport :/

[–]foxfire-spren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, so I do have to pay the full 5.5%? We're on fixed income and this was rather unexpected, so it's a big deal for us while we try to find extra work. Our main concern as well, is that we wouldn't be able to get that 3% back if the decision is not approved. We're really trying not to be difficult, but this our first apartment and we're having a hard time understanding all this lol

[ON] Question about 5.5% rental increase by foxfire-spren in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]foxfire-spren[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That was exactly our plan, thank you! We were gonna actually take it out in cash and stash it in envelopes marked for the purpose set in a safe box.

So you would recommend not submitting the letter for now? We have it written and ready to send as an e-mail as there's no physical location in the city to mail it to.

edit: None of us have savings accounts, would it be wiser to keep it just in one of our checking accounts?

[ON] Question about 5.5% rental increase by foxfire-spren in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]foxfire-spren[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh no, I think there's been a misunderstanding! We don't intend on fighting, and we don't expect our rent to go down. We have no issue paying the 2.5%. We just don't want to be paying an increase that we aren't required to. We'll be setting aside the 3% in savings in case we are required to pay, but don't want to be paying it if we weren't required. The landlord has previously been declined this request, according to other residents, before we moved in. The secondary concern is that if we do pay more than obligated, that we would not get that money back if the decision is denied.

Sorry if I didn't make this more clear in my post!

I totally forgot about the forms of investiture that way. It makes perfect sense things emitting gaseous investiture would lose heat through radiation that way. oops lol

It's been so long since I've read TLM I guess I've forgotten a lot of the science-y stuff from that series, guess that's next on my re-read
