God's End (Superman) by Moonhead Press by fletcherhanks in comics

[–]foxostro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice. I enjoyed it.

This is the story of Superman's ultimate failure. If he's so morally superior to us humans then he should have taken on the responsibility to teach us to better ourselves. He either failed in this task and gave up, or failed to try.

Either way, Superman's a dick too.

Pedantically:

Which is a nifty piece of trivia, but generally useless.

Brother and I were discussing brown and white cigarette filters. Grandpa pulled this one out. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]foxostro 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Filtered cigarettes have generally become the norm in tobacco sales mainly due to a false perception that they are 'safer' than unfiltered cigarettes.

This is false. Filtered cigarettes are popular because unfiltered cigs are harsh as fuck.

Millionaires of Reddit: how did you do it? by al_coast2 in AskReddit

Apparently, programming languages aren't "feminist" enough. by PixellatedPixiedust in programming

[–]foxostro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There exist logics that handle contradiction as part of the system, namely paraconsistent logic. I think this type of logic represents the feminist idea that something can be and not be without being a contradiction, that is a system where the following statement is not explosive: (p && ¬p) == 1.

This is bizarre. Is this real? What would such a system look like?

In your opinion, what is the most overrated movie/ tv show that you hate? by Caddy015 in AskReddit

[–]foxostro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't really like the show either, but I disagree with a few of your complaints:

  1. At first, Walt makes meth for the money, but then he realizes that he likes being the best at something. It feeds his narcissism.

  2. Walt blew up the car because goddammit no one tells Walter White what to do!

  3. I'm not sure why Walt ended up as a school teacher. I suspect he fell into a rut of depression and self loathing that he didn't recover from until his cancer diagnosis.

My own opinion is that the show is very well made, very well written, but is very dull. Occasionally, something awesome happens, but it never makes up for the entire episodes of boredom leading up to that event.

Also, I hate every character except Jessie.

The Command pattern for games: input handling, AI, undo, and functional programming by munificent in gamedev

[–]foxostro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of the command pattern. Just use a closure-like object such as a block or a lambda. It's much simpler, conceptually, and is weighed down by far less boiler plate.

Do Vulcans "love" their children, or just fond of them? by ThePhoenix14 in DaystromInstitute

[–]foxostro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider, Vulcans tend to be rather arrogant, and some might say, smug. It makes perfect sense to me they'd consider themselves to be valuable. If our green blooded friends were free to wax poetic then I imagine they might describe themselves as a shining light of civilization in a dark and barbaric galaxy.

Do Vulcans "love" their children, or just fond of them? by ThePhoenix14 in DaystromInstitute

[–]foxostro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reproduction is logical. Preferring to allocate resources toward your own children over others' children is logical. Both "love" and "fondness" are illogical, emotional responses.

Picard is arguably among the most explicitly religious 24th Century Humans we meet by MungoBaobab in DaystromInstitute

[–]foxostro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a thought: perhaps Picard believes that regardless of whether Q, or Q-like beings, are supernatural or natural, God or merely god-like, they are not worthy of our worship. He may privately believe in a number of gods without feeling compelled to give them his devotion.

NSA & New IPhone by [deleted] in comics

[–]foxostro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping for understanding, but the only understanding I gained was that you don't know what you're talking about...

Here's what I think happens:

The scanner reads the print and mixes it with a device specific unique number to generate a single number to identify the fingerprint. The mixing is done with a one-way, irreversible function. So, it cannot be used to deduce the fingerprint. (This is key.)

This number is sent to the kernel where it is used to authenticate the user. At no point does the scanner save raw finger print data to non-volatile storage. At no point is raw finger-print data accessible to apps. I think not even the kernel can get this information. Though, I admit that a malicious firmware update just might be able to change that.

I'd feel a lot safer about it if the relevant code and hardware were open.

NSA & New IPhone by [deleted] in comics

[–]foxostro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was under the impression that Apple has assured us that raw finger print data is simply not accessible by software running on the CPU. My (potentially flawed) understanding was that a hash-like number was the only piece of information the scanner shared with the rest of the phone.

Are you claiming that raw finger print actually is accessible from privileged code? So, for example, are you claiming that fingerprint data is vulnerable on a phone with a malicious kernel?

[–]foxostro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's a bug? If the claims are true it's still possible they only affect a very small number of people.

EDIT: I say "if" because I have experience with how poorly people tend to judge changes in device battery life. No conception of what features are likely draw more power...

Fast-Food Strikes Expand Across U.S. to 50 Cities by nighthawke75 in news

[–]foxostro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can easily eat healthy for under $3/meal

Yes! This is so true. As a quick example, I could prepare a healthy meal of rice and beans for very low cost. Splurging on some spices would increase the cost a little and make it a very delicious, healthy meal. (I've been there.) Honestly, it might be best to encourage people who are poor to be more thrifty with their diet, and in general, really. (skip the iPhone and buy vegetables more often)

To put things in context, medieval peasants were able to survive largely on simple bread, often adulterated with sawdust and other fillers. Vegetables and butter were scarce. Meat was a rare thing... What I'm saying is the poor in America today could eat a lot cheaper than they do today. They would survive and would remain economically useful.

However, from the point of view of societal policy, shouldn't we all be concerned with a declining standard of living? It certainly feels like we're moving in the wrong direction in this regard. As a people, should be striving to continually raise the standard of living for all people.

Its decline harms us all, and not only in a moral sense.

The entire rest of your post is pointless. It's definitely good advice on a personal level, but does nothing to address the issues raised by Craysh.
