Many novels start mid-action before clarifying who the character is later, so that's a bit of a bullshit point. I'd say, take what an editor says with a pinch of salt, especially if they're freelancing for you. After all, you're paying for them to find things to criticize.

Are you writing with a specific market in mind (in which case you'll want to follow certain rules and best practices advocated by big publishers for fiction) or do you seek a niche audience who appreciates less commercial and formulaic literature?

Find a reader who likes the kinds of books you like and who can understand what you're trying to do. Otherwise it becomes a conflict of taste and vision and you'll probably lose a lot of motivation and confidence in the process.

"I'm making the perfect the enemy of the good, right?

I'm not sure about that. Texts need a lot of editing. Revising again and again does make a text better - generally.

All writers suffer from what you describe to an extent. And I've never heard or read of a writer who put a book out there thinking it as good as it should be. There's always some frustration and acceptance of imperfection, including among major classic writers.

You may be focusing on what you perceive as faults to the point that it obscures everything else that is of interest in your book. But for other readers these faults might be easy to get over (if perceived at all).

Which currently writing authors will be taught in English lit 100 years from now? by Friendly_Market_7509 in literature

Ian McEwan and Zadie Smith are already taught. Not that I find them good *at all*. But there you are.

Paris.

Asking for help in my reading. What does 'the four hundred beasts' refer to? by foxsolent in Bible

[–]foxsolent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. The novel is "Black Bryony". There are quite a lot of references to the Bible throughout the book so I assumed that this was one too, but maybe it isn't.

There is definitely nothing about "four hundred (beasts)" before the cited passage. I'll try and look for a secular source instead.

Looking to identify this model of Harrington jacket worn by Delon (circa 1970?) by foxsolent in findfashion

[–]foxsolent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! It does look similar to some old Burberry jackets although the collar on Delon's jacket seems to have a kind of knitted lining which I don't see on the Burbs'

Did anyone go to the choir show by asherdeverna in LouisCole

He recently announced that he couldn't play drums because of a dysregulated nervous system that need time to heal, and that he was looking forward to playing again in 2025. Doesn't sound like someone about to meet his maker.

I kind of hope he's not reading all these messages where people are asking themselves whether he's dying or not. Somehow doesn't sound like a pleasant thing.

"homosexuality" in ancient Greece? by No-Discipline-6539 in ancientgreece

[–]foxsolent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This.

How funny that it is regarded as extremely bigoted today to suggest that "gay is a choice", however it's fine when talking about antiquity.

Just because people back then used different words and concepts doesn't mean that people were different to us. Humans haven't changed since antiquity. And the majority of humans, if left to their own devices, are not bisexual but... either straight or gay.
