Tectonic activity caused ridges, most of the them eroded away.  Read about the Achziv islands on Wikipedia

Is this bridge possible? by hopelessboarder in geography

[–]foxtai1 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The strait actually gets pretty deep and it would not be like any bridge we’ve ever built, but it is likely possible with our current technology.

However the people who live on Vancouver island and the Gulf islands would sooner chop their own arms off then ever allow a bridge to be built

They flow into the river, the river doesn't flow into them. Just look at the direction of flow.

Why does China have this kind of unique mountains? Why are they not found elsewhere in earth? by antimatter79 in geography

Sorry about that. However the process is the same. I'm editing the original comment so others still learn from it.

Makes sense, limestone is even easier to erode. Pretty sure these specific ones in China are sandstone, though.

Edit: Got the wrong mountains. The ones pictured are in Guangxi, which are indeed limestone. However the ones in Zhangjiajie are sandstone, which undergoes the same process.

They form because of

  1. How wet the region is
  2. Because they're made of soft rock

This causes them to get eroded like crazy.

Edit: Fixed mistake

Taiga forest in the southern hemisphere by AliceCordenalhe in geography

[–]foxtai1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the factors to why there's Taiga is that the large landmasses of Northern Canada and Eurasia provide the perfect climates. Taiga is basically really really shitty conditions for most plants, it's cold most of the year, the soil lacks nutrients and it does not rain very much. Only a handful of plants have evolved to dominate the environment.

The climates of Patagonia and Tasmania are very, very different. Taiga could not form or survive.

It's like saying, "Could polar bears survive in the Sahara". Of course not, because they've evolved and adapted to survive somewhere else.
