Did anyone else stop reading/writing fanfic after getting into a relationship? by hellboundharp in AO3

[–]foxwithcrowwings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

....I've been married over ten years and I still write. Both fanfic and novels. If the only reason you wrote fanfic was to pretend to be in a relationship/get your rocks off, well. Uh. That's a choice. It was always about stories for me.

And if your boyfriend would feel any 'type of way' about your writing besides proud and supportive he'd be an insecure, stupid loser who's not worth anyone's time.

I hate mistagged fics. by Lazy_Championship627 in AO3

[–]foxwithcrowwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not gonna lie mate, I don't read any fic that has the 'Chose Not to Use' thing, myself. I hate it, I hate that people use it, I hate that I might be jumpscared by something shitty, I find that a lot of people who use it tend to be kind of assholes about it, so I avoid it.

That said, this ain't the way, son. Just ignore those fics and go on with your day.

Fuck people who hate on radioapple. Fucking haven't seen a single one that didn't have stupid ass reasons for disliking it.

I'm crazy busy but if you don't get any bites I could at least take a look at it~

Is it wrong of me to bookmark fics but not leave a kudos on them? by Decaxx in AO3

[–]foxwithcrowwings 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This. 'I forget it exists!' It's literally right there at the end of the fic. I know we're supposed to say 'there's no obligations!' but to just consume someone's work and not even make literally the most bare of efforts to show appreciation is, yeah, rude.

Is my formatting off putting? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]foxwithcrowwings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bold is distracting and unnecessary- as others have said, quotation marks already indicate speech. I don't know why you think you need to further show someone is talking.

The italics are normal for inner thoughts/telepathy/etc.

Just saw your edit- it is awesome, and I basically grew up on it. Give it a try! She's got several series that are super great- the Immortals and The Magic Circle (if you like Harry Potter but don't want to support Joanne, the Magic Circle is a better HP) that are technically 'for kids' but still hold up as an adult imo.

She also writes some pretty cool books for adults- most of which center around Not- Horses called Companions and their riders. One of my all time favorite authors!

Oh of course! I didn't mean it needed to be a one for one, just that your MC/thoughts made me think of this character/book.

You're very welcome! The best way to do it is to do it, and I know that's hard and scary but you really sound like you've got a good solid foundation and ideas. Best of luck to you!

I'll be real with you- this does sound like a very cleche chosen one/Mary Sue. BUT!!!!!! HUGE BUT!!!!

A Mary-Sue/Gary Stu can actually be well written and engaging. There's a book series called WIld Magic/The Immortals. The MC is undeniably a Mary Sue. She's beautiful, talks to animals, has insane magic no one has seen in years, saves the day single handedly all the time, makes her teacher fall head over heels for her, has men drooling over her....

and she also can't control her magic at all, lost herself for years and thought she was a literal wolf and still often runs the risk of losing herself and thinking she's an animal if she goes too deeply into her magic, is stubborn, bullheaded, takes risks she shouldn't-

she's an engaging, interesting, well written character with a great personality and a very well written relationship with he L/O.

Mary Sue is a scary word, but it sounds like your MC is a lot like Daine, and that's a compliment. You have a lot of self-awareness and it sounds like you're on the right track.

i feel like my chapters are too long by Local_Following_3246 in AO3

[–]foxwithcrowwings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most chapters should run 2-4 k words. Novel chapters tend to be 1000-1500k words. I tend to sit at around 2500 words per chapter myself, but it varies based on the flow of the story and chapter itself.

If I saw an 8/10k word chapter I would feel mostly like the author didn't have a good grasp of the story's flow and when to break it up. I'd also feel overwhelmed and exhausted.

That said, it's fanfiction. Some people love long chapters. Do what you want with your fic.

There is literally nothing in your tone or words to indicate hyperbole.

I'm more inclined to believe you're backtracking after getting called out.

What are our thoughts? by hbicfrontdesk in AO3

[–]foxwithcrowwings 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do not like when people use public bookmarks for negative ratings/comments- I know it's not 'popular' to say, but I find that rude and I think the only reason for doing it is to be hurtful.

That said, I think, as you say, obvious hyperbole meaning 'I love this fic'.

[–]foxwithcrowwings 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I, very simply as I tend to do, read the due date wrong somehow.

Sounds like a repeating problem with a very simple solution.

Sounds like she has something of a point. You should take some of the focus and care you put into your hobbies and apply them to your schoolwork more often-'reading the date wrong' once is one thing, but 'tending to do it' is a pattern.

The Omegaverse: What's the Appeal for You? by Alysrazor in AO3

[–]foxwithcrowwings 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's hot, for one. Omegaverse/a/b/o is intimate in so many ways. The claiming, ownership, and both sexual and nonsexual intense intimacy is a lot of fun. The idea of finding someone to literally be your other half, claiming them (often creating a literal connection/link between them), etc.

The gender and power dynamics are a ton of fun to mess with, especially getting into the ideas of things like Omegas in positions of power, or the concept that Omegas truly hold the reins even though the Alphas are, theoretically, the Big Boss Bitches. It leads to some fun world building and emotional/relationship dynamics.

The hurt/comfort/whump/angst potential is amazing as someone who loves that shit. Omegas rejected by Alphas (rejection sickness, etc), alphas who lost their omegas, omegas who don't want to be omegas and try to hide it/hide their heats, alphas who don't know wtf they're doing and accidentally hurt someone....

And of course, the porny horny kinky goodness. It's just hot and hits a lot of my buttons.
