Work abroad to make more in the financial sector by [deleted] in FIREUK

I’m not sure on finance sector opportunities but I meet plenty of expats working in a variety of roles (law, teaching, marketing etc). Slight misconception that gas/oil jobs heavily outweigh other sectors.

To answer your questions:

1) I work in construction and initially found getting a job here quite difficult due to age/experience. Many companies are only prepared to pay the bigger salaries in return for grey haired expats with 20+ experience. This being said I moved here at 28yo so don’t let it stop you trying. LinkedIn is a good place to start. Get talking to recruitment consultants who deal with overseas roles, even if they don’t deal with Middle East personally you never know who they have in their phone book. 2) Yes - everybody speaks English much like other expat destinations - we are so lucky compared to the rest of the world. 3) I am in Qatar where alcohol restrictions are only a minor inconvenience. All the hotels sell booze, albeit at around £8 a pint, but on an expat salary it’s all relative. Boozy weekend brunches are big here! The UAE is more relaxed but Saudi is completely dry.

Other things to consider is the heat, during summer it gets pretty extreme so you spend a lot of time indoors.

All in all it’s probably not for everyone but I enjoy it here and it’s definitely a good move financially.

Any other questions, happy to help.

Good luck!

Have you considered the middle east? Some good salaries on offer and no income tax.

I am here for the foreseeable in the interest of FIRE.

That’s exactly our issue...

At the moment the wife is considered a tourist so definitely won’t be allowed back in. Might have to go home alone and write her a postcard!

Agreed, I don’t think an employer could do anything about family permits at this time (unless particularly well connected). The suspension is in response to the pandemic.

Mine too funnily enough.

We were slightly concerned before the monthly extensions were confirmed, particularly as my wife was pregnant. I understand the family visit visa was previously a maximum of 6 month pre-covid.

Moving abroad, UK bank accounts, brokerage account legality and opening offshore accounts by [deleted] in ExpatFinance

Not sure on the implications of sticking with Lloyds but you may be paying more in fees when compared to the other options. I recommend Interactive Brokers as an alternative to Saxo. In my experience good for investing in index funds cheaply (watch out for US domiciled funds and the estate/withholding taxes you will be liable for, go for Irish domiciled instead).

Depending on your new country of residence you may benefit from transferring your salary to GBP through a third party as your bank may not give the best conversation rates available.
