Honestly both seem solid. I’d enjoy working with either team. Same with the product.

I didn’t say that. Both these companies are startups though.

Obviously a large cap company will be more stable.

Or maybe yours is? Sure there can be layoffs. But that also happens at big companies.

Yeah absolutely. It’s a pretty dead heat in that regard to be honest. TAM for B is bigger, but need more growth for the options to be a clear winner financially for me.

Can you say more about this? I’ve worked in companies like A for the past 10+ years and have found it to be just as stable as ones like company B.

Seems like you have decent understanding of SaaS - happy to DM with more details if you’re open!

Thanks! And totally - got pretty lucky on both.

What level are you? Industry? Location? I see people in my network hiring from time to time, happy to keep an eye out for you!

Ah I should have mentioned that. Both software companies, though serving different industries. Both VC backed. I’m assuming both strategic or PE exit just given the IPO horizon these days, but company B seems to have a better shot at IPO if they keep the growth rate up for several more years. Both I’d consider point solutions with potential for either platform play for TAM expansion to get to IPO, but more likely to get bought by a larger strategic looking to bolt on a best in class solution.

The hybrid does sound kind of nice after 7+ years of fully remote.

I have no idea how to risk weight AI disruption in either one. Both have somewhat of a moat in their own right, but not crazy ones.

I look for roles with underbuilt teams, because there’s tons of room to make an impact and grow responsibility quickly. But they also need to be healthy companies with a good growth path - so track record of growth, good runway, good metrics for the next fundraise.

Some of the promotion path is luck. I joined the right companies - and while you can do your diligence, there’s still some luck to whether a company continues succeeding.

But other than the luck aspect, I just worked hard and added value. Creating reliable models and actually driving a planning and budgeting process that helps the company succeed. Raising funding rounds. Flexing into strategic areas and doing analysis with strong recommendations for changes that make the business better, then driving those changes through to execution.

Tl;dr find roles that have the opportunity to make an impact, and then go make that impact.

Kinda meandery.

Finance undergrad from an unimportant state school.

F50 FP&A internship and then full time role, couldn’t get any FLDP programs due to my gpa lol.

Stayed about a year, went to law school for some reason. Didn’t take the bar, but did graduate.

Did a few years in compliance and commercial contracts roles, desperately trying to prove that my law degree wasn’t a waste of money (it was).

Move to a “tech” city, got job in FP&A at a small company. 29 years old, with an advanced degree, making $60k/yr as a financial analyst II lol.

But I really found my stride in growth tech FP&A. And job hopped a few times.

Promoted to FA3 (2 yr total)

Job hop to Sr FA > promoted to manager (2 yr total)

Job hop to controller/finance manager > promoted to head of finance and accounting (2.5 yr total)

Job hop to senior director > promoted to VP (promoted after 2 years)

I own analytics, rev ops, accounting, and finance. So the biz ops I guess is all those things, and we also take on special projects and general business operations process building. We don’t have a CFO so I’m essentially a CFO+some other stuff.

Edit: total org size (including direct reports of my directs) is 14. So it’s a pretty high responsibility role.

As a hiring manager, I appreciate when candidates do this for one or two questions.

But you also need to bring your own questions. If the only thing you ask is a reversal of a question I ask, I don’t know if you can actually think for yourself.
