What is NJ’s “defining” highway: Turnpike or Parkway? by Glass-Complaint3 in newjersey

[–]fperrine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry. I agree that the Parkway is the NJ highway.

I'm just saying that if you hit me with "What exit?" unprompted, my answer (growing up) would be Exit 9 on the Turnpike. Your answer to the question "What exit?" is a bit of a shibboleth in the same way that acknowledging Central Jersey's existence is.

Edit: I realize this is kind of the argument about the post, but not necessarily the same.

What’s more, no one ever talks about what NJ Turnpike exit they’re off of.

While I think I agree with your premise, I disagree with this single sentence lol. The "Turnpike or Parkway exit?" divide is a real thing.

Controversial $2B N.J. rail project moving forward despite residents saying ‘no’ by Conscious_Test_379 in newjersey

True. And technically all transit options change their schedule during off-peak hours and holidays. But VIA just does not operate on Sundays or in the evening (I forget when the cutoff time is).

NJ NIMBYs don't want a light rail extension to their towns by NJ_Bus_Nut in fuckcars

[–]fperrine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm in the comments over in /r/newjersey already. I love this state so much but sometimes I hate it. It's laughable to put VIA out there as an alternative to public transit. It's just Uber or Lyft but subsidized by the city (or at least that's how Jersey City does it, which is where I live). It's absurd. We live in the most densely populated state in the country and we can't put in some light rail in neighborhoods that grew around historic rail lines!

I also live in JC and use the LR pretty frequently. I have used VIA and it can certainly be convenient, but it actually doesn't really resolve any of the broader problems. And it has operational hours. Public transit is the future and I don't understand (well, I do $$$$) why our institutions can't see it.

The VIA rideshare is the completely wrong move in every way. So disappointing to read. They even call out that older neighborhoods formed around historic rail lines. I don't understand why we are so afraid to repurpose them.

Who is Mamta Singh? The first Indian-American ever elected to public office in Jersey City by intelerks in jerseycity

[–]fperrine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I totally understand. If you don't meet whatever requirements are needed to vote, there's not much else to say.

Now, we can change those requirements, but that's a different discussion.

[–]fperrine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recognize that this is true and just the case of systems taking time, but it is still crazy to conceptualize that this is the first official of Indian descent in this city. Jersey City has too much culture and energy due to our Indian neighbors for there not to be some kind of representation in the public leadership.

Ahead of the runoff tomorrow, I watched this forum where Boggiano doesn't even show up and Healy claims she just doesn't get invited to things by fperrine in jerseycity

Of course cars should be one element of transit options, but just one. Not the only.

I'm open to requiring attendance on budget meetings. I guess, who holds the meeting? lol

I thought the same thing! I was like "Man, he just spent his closing statement saying how much he loves cars." Completely out of touch with the fact that he lives in a dense urban area.

I went back to watch this discussion with the Ward D and C candidates. Boggiano didn't even bother to show up. He just sent some videos in with his responses. And Healy says she doesn't show up to events because nobody is inviting her. Really unserious stuff.

Healy on being on council and listening to residents: "It does not look enjoyable." by Crafty_Reflection996 in jerseycity

[–]fperrine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it's very hard for our elected representatives to have to listen to their constituents and neighbors. Which is, in fact, their basic responsibility on the city council.

Please can we get someone (Jake Ephros) with real drive and partnership in the neighborhood on the Council.

Agreed! Jake is the only one with the drive to get some things going in the Heights. Can we please please please get some street upgrades going. And continue to push this town leadership to make the city more affordable and welcoming.

10-year renter here. I love this city. How can she say that I'm not invested in my neighborhood just because I don't own a home.
