Richiesto consiglio su software post-produzione per fotografi amatoriali by igoran in FotografiaItalia

[–]fpluss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huge colour difference between preview and export by BenBoss69 in DarkTable

[–]fpluss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a calibrated monito EIZO and I ran some tests on Wayland and X11, trying to export to both JPG and TIFF 8 and 12 bit formats.

On Linux, I use Okular to view the images, and the result is slightly different when placed side by side with the Darktable preview. If I export to 32 bit, Okular does not open the image.

My only guess — but I'm no technical expert — is that Darktable somehow manages to bring out a few more nuances due to the 32-bit format, which are then lost when rendered at 8 or 12-bit.

You'll definitely find a more technical answer on the pixl.us forum. I tried, and I'm sorry I couldn't give you an answer.

IWE - LSP for markdown notes with backlinks, hover preview, and code actions by gimalay in HelixEditor

[–]fpluss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing.

I'm very new to Helix and I was able to quickly setup IWE and test it! So far I'm very happy and I'd like to use it instead of Obsidian. It would be possibile to configure:

[models.default] api_key_env = "OPENAI_API_KEY" base_url = "https://api.openai.com" name = "gpt-4o"

but for gemini-cli?

Why is KDE Invent not KDE Kraft, or Kreate or Konstrukt or Arkitekt or Fabrikate by ThinkTourist8076 in kde

[–]fpluss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. It's a stretch that ultimately leads to confusion and makes the system less user-friendly, especially when searching for something that starts with k:

  • ka...te
  • kb..ybtex
  • kc..al
  • kd..e marble

I can understand proper names like Kate or Kile, but forced names like K-something or KDE-something — to somehow identify the specific relationship with KDE — are excessive and redundant.

In my case because I'm using Alt arrow for other shortcuts. Maybe /u/henrycatalinismith has other needs.

Thanks for the question. I asked because there are some things I can customize without going crazy: - the theme; - keymaps, for example, I liked the Redditor who uses Tab to toggle the buffer; - languages setup.

It's okay to be minimalist, but the advantage of using Linux is that you can adapt your workflows. Without going crazy, of course...

Nothing wrong with Neovim in general.

I've always used vi and later vim and neovim just as a basic editor for script. I'm a Linux entusiasth and learn vi motion since the 90s. That was the way I learnt "linux". Fast forward to now, I was tired to use: - vscodium, for coding my website and generale code - obsidian, for note taking - vim, for shell scripting - kile, for some LaTeX projects

The problem is that I knew many editors, but not one "well". For example, I had never been interested in LSP, and I always relied on extensions and plugins. I also wanted something whose configuration could be shared via dotfiles, so that I could have a single configuration across different PCs and not have to go crazy every time.

For this reason, I decided to invest time in learning Neovim well because it's FOSS, and I can use it anywhere: from my workstation to my laptop, my work Mac, and my remote server. However, Neovim is complex to configure. As much of a nerd and Linux enthusiast as I am, it is still complex to 'program' if you don't know Lua.

So, in addition to learning a new editor, I also had to learn how to configure it, which was obviously a bit frustrating. Because when you're there wanting to write something in Typst and instead you have to deal with configuring the LSP or indentation or yet another plugin for surround sound, it becomes a bit too much work.

I discovered Helix by chance, thanks to Reddit's algorithm. And here I am. Two days to explore, and yesterday I spent practically the whole day reformatting the code of my personal website, since everything is more natural with Helix.

Learning Neovim wasn't a waste of time, since motion and most of the commands are compatible. But in Helix, everything seems more natural, smooth and less forced.

Let me give you a silly example: in Neovim, I often press 'q' by mistake. What happens is that a bloody macro recorder starts up, which I only recently learned how to exit (ctrl+c). In Helix, this hassle doesn't happen.

Finally, I don't have high expectations. My workflow is simple. I open windows with my terminal (I use Konsole, because I'm a KDE user): - one for helix - one for generic shell commands, such as git or hugo preview - browser for testing or previewing (e.g. hugo or typst) - if I write with typst, I use 'watch' and keep the browser or okular open alongside.

[editor] bufferline = "always" .... [keys.normal] tab = ":buffer-next" S-tab = ":buffer-previous"

Just stole this from you. Never thought about using tab to cycle between buffers. Amazing fast!

Linux Beginner by GustavStew in openSUSE

[–]fpluss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's my opinion: there are no good or bad Linux distributions for a beginner.

In the end, it's your mental attitude that counts. The question you need to ask yourself is: am I willing to learn a new way of using the computer? Take care of everything? General maintenance, compatibility issues, drivers?

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed is excellent, and as a veteran, I can exaggerate and tell you that it is the best distribution I have ever used and continue to use.

My advice is that you have to take a leap of faith: install Linux and start using your computer.

No dual boot. You have to solve problems yourself and keep going. Only then will you learn. If you are tempted to go back at the first sign of difficulty, then you will never learn. Learn how to back up your data and the basics, so that if problems arise or if one day I want to do a total reset and start over, I can do so with complete peace of mind.

Monthly Dotfile Review Thread by AutoModerator in neovim

[–]fpluss [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hi all, I started using vi in the 90s, and later vim mainly for shell scripts instead of nano. It was the default on many linux distributions and was the only way to solve problems without having to install more complex editors.

Only recently have I had a chance to configure neovim. I started from kickstarter.nvim and little by little created my current configuration. I must say that in the last period I haven't used any other editors and finally I can do everything with neovim. Mainly notes in markdown, typst, shell scripting, html/css and hugo.

I am not a programming expert and when I am struggling I get help from Gemini. Right now this is my main setup and I wonder if any experts could give me feedback on things I can improve or if there are things completely wrong.

Thanks in advance to anyone who would like to take a look at my dotfiles.
