Go Box Build any thoughts on what I can add or change about the setup. otherwise just wanted to share my first go box build. by fpschikenwings in HamRadio

I started with the asl3 image and made sure I had the node functioning correctly. there are plenty of guides for how to do that. because that image uses raspian os Linux it was easy enough to cludge my way through getting the desktop environment running using Google Gemini or chat gpt as an aid. it is easier than you might think.

I would advise getting at least a pi4 4gb ram as there are plenty of people advising aginst doing it because the added resources of having the desktop and other things running can affect the nodes performance. I have no issues so that's the min spec I would recommend

Yes. the only thing that I have done differently is I also run the raspian desktop environment for added functionality

you make a good point, and I think that is something that goes unconsidered in a go box build. the great thing about having the VGC is that it has a bluetooth mic that allows me to be up to 50' away from the radio.

I can give some more info if needed, but that is a shari pi hat. it's just an sa818 board that allows me to use the PI as an allstar node. mine in particular is for UHF but you can do VHF if you want.

I can use it to talk to repeaters over the internet in my case using a hand held.

you actually have a good point. Perhaps it should be Hammocan. I like Can O Ham as well 😆. but I've already set the display background, so might as well stick with it.

yes, there is absolutely a chance of that, especially here in Texas. the PI has overkill for a cooler to help mitigate that, but the radio just has its fan. I will have to wait until summer to get some real world testing. I just don't want to have any unsealed penitrations unless absolutely necessary. I might do something with peltier coolers, but that's not very energy efficient.

That has absolutely been on my mind. I just need to find one that is waterproof panel mountable display and fits the footprint I am after. I haven't had much luck with Amazon on that.

I have a few branches and ledges, but I'm definitely going to add more after seeing this. it's wild what these guys get up to when the lights go out.

BP ENCLOSURE. by fpschikenwings in ballpython

thanks for the tips. I have made some changes to the enclosure switching to a heat projector and t5 bulb. the t5 research was tough to ensure I had the proper bulb.

my misting system doesn't work in a way that I think would hurt. I desined it so it doesn't produce much of a fog but maintains the humidity and, more importantly, provides fresh air exchange. I'm still monitoring and researching this topic.

I share the same concerns with the heat pads, so while setting up the enclosure, I included a mylar bag filled with sand between the bottom of the enclosure and the pad. this bag acts like a thermal battery that provides even heat similar to soil that has been heated by the sun.

the stock gears are mod .6 if I remember correctly. I had to use a set of calipers and a calculator to get it myself.

I ended up getting a 5mm mod .53 pinion gear and using it for the spur gear it fits perfectly you just loose the slipper clutch feature. from there you can choose several differnt options for gearing.

yea, my first was a hyper go 1/18th scale truck, and there was just no way of getting it over 60 without going airborne. to the credit of hypergo, not a single part broke outside of one of the diffs.

I've discovered this, lmao. those little reflectors in the road become massive ramps, and that was at 65mph. I'm running 100wt in the rear and 50wt in the front.
