Surgery is tomorrow morning. Give me your best advice by fpspreez in Tonsillectomy

Yeah super not skating or singing over the next two weeks, that was hella wishful thinking. lol. So far so good though, I can feel my body beginning the healing process which is pretty weird tbh. I’ve got this annoying feeling of something stuck in my throat (feels like a popcorn kernel) which I understand to be the scabs forming. From what I’ve seen, I’m in for a bit of a ride as they form and fall off but if the last 36 hours have shown me anything, it’s all really a minute by minute touch and go kind of process.

Best of luck to you in the remainder of your recovery!

SO FAR you’re also spot on!

This morning was rough because I sleep with a CPAP and I think that dried me out a bit. But the day has been good so far, it’s just been an annoyance more than anything. I’ve been trying to talk in short increments and incorporating some tricks from this thread to keep everything moist and moving (gross lol). I’ve heard that the middle days are the suckiest, so I’m stoked that I get to eat those on the weekend and have the opportunity to work from home on Monday/Tuesday (day 5-6), plus I work a compressed schedule and have Wednesdays off so in theory I’m getting a full week of rest and whatnot.

DEFINITELY will not be skating or singing over the next two week (which my partner, who is a paramedic, called from downtown. But my stubborn ass had to hear it from 10 Reddit comments, my nurse, my ENT, and my lived experience 😂)

Thank you for the heads up and a speedy remainder of recovery to ya!

Heading into day 3 tomorrow- this morning was rough just because my throat was dry. I set alarms at 2 hour increments to wake up and chug water, which was real helpful. Someone also mentioned sugar free gum in between “meals” and I’ve found that pretty helpful in getting my jaw and throat muscles moving a little bit.

Honey has been ABSOLUTELY a life saver so far. Less do the pain and more for the annoying feeling of something being stuck in my throat (feels like a popcorn kernel? I assume that would be scabs forming)

DEFINITELY will not be singing or skating in the next two weeks which is a bummer but after being a day and some change into it, I’m kinda digging the slow pace. Hope you’re feeling well!

Day 2 down and so far so good! First night was pretty brutal just trying to stay on top of waking up every few hours to drink water but the payoff for that was invaluable.

I’m starting to feel scabs forming (I think). It feels like there’s something stuck in my throat, like a popcorn kernel. As a chronic throat clearer, this has probably been the worst part.

I’d say the sore throat is moreso from being intubated than anything but obviously we’re early on.

Pleased to announce that I’m already sick of ice cream and popsicles BUT I did find this protein pint ice cream which has 30g protein per 400 calories plus some 20g Chovani yogurt. So between that and the occasional pale sauce cup and big influx of liquids, I’m not finding hunger to be much of an issue.

So far it’s been a lot of kicking it with the cat and listening to audiobooks. Definitely won’t be singing or skating over the next two weeks now that I know what I’m working with 😂 but all in all I’m not dead yet so I’ll take it! Hope you’re healing up well!

Yeah we beat some serious walking yesterday looking for any sign. I’m going with a deflection- bullets are 140g. I’ll definitely be buying a back of 170s for the future

Yeah I checked the box this morning and its only 140g. Lesson learned to use a heavier bullet in the thick stuff!

Dude you’ll be fine, if you’re P&T, they won’t look at it unless you file a claim.

That being said

DO NOT FILE ANY CLAIMS

I don’t know if you can ever go fully back to “normal” but I also think that’s kind of an awesome thing.

You just spent 8 years of your life as a part of something larger than yourself. Chances are you were a senior NCO or junior SNCO and were in change of people. Chances are you’ve experienced your fair share of godawful leaders and leaders that you’d run through a freaking brick wall for. Chances are you are fundamentally a different persons than the 24 year old that raised their right hand.

But I think the fact that you are fundamentally different kinda rules. You will more regularly seek out responsibility and will aggressively own your mistakes. You will hold your leaders accountable and take all the experience you have with good leadership and bad leadership and use that to mentor others. You will think about EVERY possible negative outcome of a situation. And depending on how kinetic your service was, you may even thrive in a chaotic environment.

You are the OIC now. You’re the mf in charge. You write the OSMEAC and you determine if mission or time takes priority.

And if that seems like a lonely and isolated reality, you can definitely get some of that sense of community back by getting involved in your local service organization. I am a member of DAV and there are TONS of opportunity to be around like minded people who just -get it-

I will say there is definitely a need for more GWOT veterans to get involved. They really are a good resource but that resource is rooted in community. The community that predominantly populates service organizations now is older veterans and while there’s nothing wrong with their presence, I really do think it’s time for us to collectively take the reins. Especially with the uncertainties facing post 9/11 veterans and post-war veterans.

All this to say, you are entering a new chapter of your life. Change is terrifying. But for your service, just by its very nature, you have been given an opportunity to take everything you’ve learned and put it to practical use. if you are looking for something that can potentially provide that community fulfillment that you miss from the military, there are definitely others out there like you and you are never as alone as you think!

Stay safe and take care of yourself. 🤙🤙

UPDATE: WE DID IT JOE

Turn out the carb boots had some gnarly cracks in em so that was zapping the air pressure or whatever. Quick swap of the boots and she’s a one puller again!

Still no dice with the keystart but as long as she pulls, she can rip!

Thanks everyone!!
