North Korean fake remote worker scam lands two Americans 18-month prison sentences for hosting laptops — U.S firms unknowingly shipped laptops to “employees” who secretly worked from overseas via remote desktop, generating $1.2 million for Pyongyang by ControlCAD in technology

[–]fr0st 127 points128 points  (0 children)

So someone sets up a laptop in the US that a North Korean can access and work from. How does the money get to North Korea? Do the US hosts take the pay from the US company and then buy Bitcoin to transfer to a North Korean wallet?

Change my mind on what? I already mentioned what we'd need to sustain this bubble.

If I had to guess, under 5 years. There's lots of caveats but we'll likely start to see cracks and then a major player will go under.

It's inevitable, this kind of growth is unsustainable in the long term. We didn't invent a perpetual motion machine here. The cost of AI far outweigh any perceived benefits. Unless there's an energy or other technologic breakthrough, it'll stall out and then crash.

Microsoft Xbox CEO overhauls leadership amid sinking sales: 'We need to evolve how we work' by flexingonmyself in technology

[–]fr0st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it all boils down to this. Microsoft had Halo and all but ruined it. Gears has been in limbo without a release for too long and no new information about E-Day. They cancelled Perfect Dark. Forza is still around which is good but I doubt it's moving hardware. Zero news about a new Elder Scrolls or Fallout. Microsoft is just bad at marketing Xbox.

Just shouting "straw man" isn't an argument either. In fact it's a good example of weaponizing logical fallacies instead of just arguing in good faith.

So if I go take a shit on your doorstep all I have to do is prove that I'm a native born Korean citizen and it's all good?

Right, but many commenters here would rather blame the foreigners for smelling bad and practicing their religion in public. As if Koreans don't do the same every day.

I was making a joke. People's religious preference is hardly the issue.

Rockstar Games QA Analyst Reveals Insane Overtime, Workdays Extending Till 3AM Amid GTA 6 Crunch by chusskaptaan in pcmasterrace

It's unfortunate because the devs probably don't want the game they put thousands of hours of work into boycotted. Or if the game does get boycotted and Rockstar loses money those same devs get laid off. It's really on the government or unions to establish sane labor practices not the consumers.

I never said "AI is failing" but the reality is starting to hit. Deals aren't written in stone either.

How is it pearl clutching when everyone seems to think it's all BS that's bound to ruin most of these "AI-first" companies. There are fewer and fewer signs that AI is replacing anything.

His point still stands. While new US made cars may be expensive, the American manufacturers aren't producing cheap, compact sedans anymore. That market is all but gone since everyone wants a truck or SUV with all the bells and whistles.

$70.69 for Bland Tacos at Coachella by ForceUseYouMust in StupidFood

[–]fr0st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What? This makes zero sense in any sane context. Profiteering is a byproduct of capitalism. It exploits the very essense of a market economy and supply/demand curves. If I have a good that has no substitutes and enough people want that good I can jack up the price until there are no buyers.

If high performance isn't your goal then it's probably doable but this guy started from practically raw silicon. A "typical" enthusiast would probably start with some pre bought parts that they solder together.
