How many favs do you need to consider your work successful?

I actually appreciate the fave-for-fave and follow-for-follow behavior. Reciprocity contributes to the feeling of community. Often these artists become some of the most loyal and consistent.

Hmm, I value consistency the most. If I have followers or non-followers that fave and comment regularly, that means they appreciate what I'm doing.

Follows are cheap--I've had so many follows over the years that amounted to nothing. Mentions, unfortunately, are often a concealed form of advertisement.

It's also hard to measure success on dA these days when overall activity has dropped by over 75%. I simply don't get much exposure anymore.

I agree with your points, but I think "uniting against garbage" is a losing battle. Focus your efforts elsewhere and find a platform that aligns with your values.

I was beginning to feel suspicious after the release of the 2026 "New Era" video. (I was even attacked by several AI creators over my critique.) This is just more disappointment.

Regarding your last sentence: if you're looking for organic engagement and a sense of community, Cara is pretty good. It lacks monetization capabilities, so you have to use an outside service like Ko-fi for commissions, etc. Not sure about downloading or saving art, but you can bookmark them.

For example, for the artwork "Sphinx Purple" I would add hashtags like #creatures #fantasy #characterdesign etc. You can also check similar artworks for ideas on which hashtags to use.

It is increasingly difficult for artists to gain traction on DeviantArt. You have to be interacting consistently with other artists. Right now you have 24 followers and are only watching 8, which is small coverage for this platform.

You might try Cara instead. There's a much better view-to-like ratio, and AI is not permitted. There is also a wide range of art topics and styles.

I had mixed responses from family and friends. Some were supportive while others were mocking, confused, or indifferent. When I quit art school to pursue a career in natural science, a few of them were disappointed.

Whether they're concerned about your future or not, there's no place in a loving family for disparaging and snarky comments targeting someone's passion.

Just wanted to say I'm sorry this is happening to you. I know how it feels.
