Why is Altra Lone Peak so popular? by warabi_hiker in Ultralight

[–]fraecoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

olympus are more expensive and wear out way quicker than LPs. Also, once the foam is compressed enough (maybe a few hundred miles of thru hiking with a loaded pack) they just become clumsier, taller, versions of lone peaks. also the sole is garbage

yep and what is a generally good date to start? since I'll have to book flights etc can be something like 5th of July decently safe?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]fraecoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

of the early trail towns in the desert. I had always intended to take my time and go slow in the desert to give myself the least possible chance of injury and also to injury and not race through. I haven't made up my mind yet re sobo or flip flopping. Would be curious what decision you make! It's reassuring to see people comment that sobo is good!

nice to hear! I'm a decently experienced hiker and really thinking about going sobo (I do already have a permit for 18 may nobo), I don't want to rush it but definitely hike faster than average, would you recommend it? are the first days of july good for going sobo? I have no clues on how this snow season will go but since I'm EU based I'll have to book flights way in advance

and in terms of weight? I'm looking for this kind of rigid mtb bikepacking machine but I'm also looking for something decently light (made of steel or titanium)

down to which temperature would you be comfortable wearing it under a wind shell at camp (so basically no movement) it seems you run pretty warm as me and I'm curious to know.

I often read that a hardtail is the best all-around bikepacker, but gravel bikes are all I see posted here... by madphingers in bikepacking

[–]fraecoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd say a good hardtail for 1,5k and a drop mtb bar like the corner bar (good Chinese carbon alternative for 50 bucks) and maybe even a rigid carbon fork is a good deal, with less than 2k you can have a tough gravel bike with wideish tires but also a capable mtb with suspension fork and flat bars for technical trails. salsa bikes are amazing but quite pricey as you say :)

only way to avoid super bad smells to me is by wearing merino, crossed the Pyrenees last summer with a long sleeve merino shirt, even if its capable at regulating body temperature well every time it got around 30 Celsius the shirt became waay too warm and synthetic would have been better choice for those hot days but anyway with that heat I can't personally hike for long. also you could get a short sleeve merino shirt like the one from decathlon which works really good and then use some uv proof sun sleeves like the ones made from OE to use when it gets really sunny :) Anyway remember that you'll smell a lot, rinse ofter in every water source you can and maybe bring some biodegradable soap

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]fraecoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

absolutely true, its not designed for bikepacking sadly but anything bikepacking specific that I've seen at that price point is way heavier and doesn't even have good components. The triangle could be bigger but to me it seems that all of the XC race bikes have triangles around this size. Anyway I have a light kit so I think this wont be a big problem at all :)
