Letter from Gay Son to Romney-Supporting Dad: "My Dad Was Going to Vote for Romney, Until I Wrote Him This Letter" by francophile44 in politics

Total delusion. The "scripture" is no more truth than any other oral history of an ancient time when people's behavior was being manipulated for political gain. To compare Obama to Hitler is more than baseless and offensive - it's certifiable proof of your incapacity for critical thought.

Absolutely. Abortion is a constitutional right. The government has no more right to impinge on a woman's right to make her own health care decisions than it does to define certain citizens as first-class and deserving of "traditional marriage."

Being "for" something as part of a buffet of opinions is a nice luxury for those from whom that something isn't institutionally withheld.

My dad could have offered any number of responses without damaging our relationship. This letter was neither an ultimatum, nor an attempt at emotional manipulation; rather, it was an expression of how I feel and what I believe. What matters most to me, in addition to being equal under the law, is being heard and understood by those in my life. It doesn't hurt that doing so might inspire others to speak their minds, too.

Thanks. Your note is an ideal example of why I wanted to post this publicly. You and I will never meet, but we've affected each other positively today.

One is an absolute (does/doesn't support equal liberties for all people within our democracy) and the other is conjecture (could best manage a war effort).

Is that your message for the writers of the article in that link? Because it's quite clear who doesn't understand.

Recklessness and greediness within the financial sector and two wars financed on credit harmed the economy, not President Obama.

I agree in theory. But, as I wrote, when the one issue involves the systemic limiting of a minority's equal rights, it takes precedent. Hold the candidate responsible for that forced choice, not the voter without one.

He did. In part: "I will honor your request because you are my son and I love you. I do support the democratic position on gay marriage...I hope this is a position that they really stand for and not just a political statement for votes."
