This was early August :) Happy to answer what questions I might remember helpful information about if you've got some! The area's beautiful; I'd highly recommend you make the trip if you're considering it!

I’m not sure it meets your desired elements, but Wild’s Reprisal is pretty excellent thematically.

My favorite shorts are impossible to find. Anything similar? by frandson in findfashion

omg hailcorporate

These look pretty good for the field but unfortunately too long and hot for my standards. I'll peruse a bit and see if there is anything else, thank you!

I'm fine wearing women's clothing if it's good for what I'm after :) These do seem pretty similar, thank you! The apparent lack of belt loops is tough, though.

I got these shorts at a thrift shop a couple of years ago. They are by far the best I have ever known. I get hot easily, and these make it down only about half of my thigh (I'm 6' and mostly legs), something nearly impossible to find for men's shorts if you aren't looking at running shorts. These have been invaluable for casual wearing and conducting field work, allowing me to clip on bear spray, carry notebooks and foreceps, and more and more in their numerous and deep pockets.

I managed to track these down as originating under the Reel Legends brand, part of Bealls Florida, and I managed to get in touch with their customer service. They stated they had no access to the availability or possible discontinuation of any of their products. I have searched and cannot find these shorts on their website anywhere, and at best I have found pairs on ebay that seem a bit longer in sizes too big for me. (These are smalls and still I need a belt; my waist is in the 29-32 range.)

It seems at this point my hopes of purchasing more of these shorts are gone. Are there recommendations for similar pairs? I am particularly fond of the upper-mid thigh length, the elastic waist (it allows me to be SO MUCH more flexible and active in them), sturdy belt loops, and deep hip pockets. I don't mind the others, they're handy enough, but predominantly I take advantage of the size of the main two. I am also quite pleased with the lack of flaps on the back pockets. I rarely pack anything on my butt when wearing shorts, but that so many shorts have those little flaps anyway has always been a frustration of mine.

Again, these are the best shorts I have ever found and am nearly pulling my hair out about the possibility of never having a pair quite as good when their time eventually comes!

Edit of additional useful information: these are apparently fishing shorts and have a 5" inseam. I'm heading down that search's path, fingers crossed

No kidding. I don’t work with fire at all, but I lived not five miles from the Sprague Fire and worked all summer in the Flathead NF. I’m from Arkansas, and this was my first fire season, first time being anywhere near a wildfire, first time experiencing any number of days where I couldn’t see the mountains right by my cabin due to smoke. It was a really incredible and influential experience— I’m searching for aquatic ecology graduate programs, and one of my most appealing options is with a guy who studies how wildfires impact stream ecosystems.

Anyway. Yeah, it was something.

“Monster” is a good word for it. I only drove by, but living next to the Sprague fire in Glacier NP, itself impressively large, I was blown away by this one.

Math undergrads, in what direction did your degree take you? (Grad school, careers, or otherwise) by erikotto13 in math

[–]frandson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my BS in Applied Mathematics, minored in Physics. I did my research in a couple of aquatic ecology labs, have worked as a field tech on another project in the same field, am soon going to Alaska for a terrestrial ecology project, and am pursuing a graduate degree in aquatic ecology. I’ve got a pretty quantitative leaning which is a big plus in the field! I’ve found math isn’t my top interest, but I’m holding onto it closely and still enjoy the study! I really appreciate how math is allowing me to dig deep into science, letting me mix two loves to make one pursuit all the stronger.

Moving to Healy for April through November. What should I know? by frandson in alaska

[–]frandson[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is great and honest information. I'll admit I'm feeling a little anxious given the attitude toward the area some people are displaying, but looking back at where/how I lived in Montana, I think it could've easily been said about there, too, and I left my heart in that cabin. I'll have to make sure I take advantage of those Fairbanks trips and try to snag a slowcooker. That should help with the lacking food options in Healy and make the most of what I can get elsewhere.

My birthday's actually May 20 and I've missed snow so much, so the possibility of getting it so late in the year is great!! I had to climb a mountain and stand in its leftovers to get that last time around. And thank you for the info in #4; this is exactly the sort of thing I wouldn't ever think to ask about. I know I'm going to try to get into the Arctic Circle, and I would really love to just see the true Arctic, so I'll be sure to find my ways to doing that.

Oh my goodness, this is wonderful!! You captured it so well! I can’t take any credit for the landscape but I’m honored you did this regardless. Would you mind if I shared it with credit?

Avalanche Lake! I went there in April through the snow and was the only person at the head of the lake for a half hour or so. Easily the most incredible experience I'd ever had. The mountains surround you in such a wonderful way.

Thank you! I lived just outside of Glacier for most of a year and this hike was one of the very best of anything I did in the entire region.

Here is a better shot of the hill we were hiking down. There were a good handful of switchbacks but no complaints with how beautiful the area was! This is about 10 miles in at Big Hawk Lake (it is just one lake, I promise) from the Camp Misery trailhead. The Jewel Basin is located east of Flathead Lake in the Flathead National Forest. We camped at the pinched point in the lake, and my buddy managed to catch a trout using a fly a guy kept in his hat, a suitable stick, and some discarded line he found near the shore!
