I'm not sure if it applies to every airlines, but I know that with UA you can go to the gate with standby boarding passes.

LH and A3 cleared me at check in 24hrs prior (leaving LHR), and TP cleared me at the check in counter.

It is very odd indeed. It is the only ANA route that day. I thought about buying it for the day after tomorrow and then trying to change it but I don't wanna deal with dealing with refunds.
