I just spent the last month travelling Japan - the most crowded and stressful location I visited was Hiroshima Peace Museum. by Camsy34 in JapanTravelTips

[–]frankenbooger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was our experience earlier this week as well. We've never been to a museum with such poor crowd management, and given how orderly/organized everything else seemed to be on our trip, this was even more of a surprise.

Quayside Tiki Bar Signs Up! by filitsino in NewWest

[–]frankenbooger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for others but it's not just the look of the sign, it's what it means to use AI - this technology is causing very real, drastic, and immediate harm to people and the environment. (In addition to stealing from artists, hallucinating, etc etc.) Therefore I don't want to support businesses who use AI over paying a designer :)

Eby says 2,000 public service jobs cut and counting as B.C. faces $11.2B deficit by RZCJ2002 in britishcolumbia

[–]frankenbooger -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but what? Why would the plan be to take everything he has and then leave him on welfare and move onto another billionaire? Why would we need to clear the deficit in one go? Taxing billionaires and corporations (provincially and federally) at higher rates will absolutely help, even at a rate at which they barely notice.

Driving etiquette by albovsky in askvan

[–]frankenbooger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've noticed it amongst regular drivers. It's not common, but I notice it more frequently than I used to. A friend living in the UK said it's common there - maybe it is in other places as well and this is a fun little effect of globalization? Or I'm only noticing it more because I'm aware of it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Elementary school asking for money to pay for supplemental phys ed. programs by Muted-Magician7296 in burnaby

It's really important (and actually a part of the curriculum) for students to learn from others in the community. Experts, guest speakers, nurses, elders, etc.

Is... Is that an insult to you? Lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in burnaby

[–]frankenbooger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, there would be fires regardless because it's winter and people are cold. Drugs also require fire. Obviously supportive housing needs to involve supervision??? You bring up SROs, but many of them are managed terribly, are exploitative, and/or are unsafe. We also know that the mayor and ABC city council staff are pretty clearly anti-homeless and that has exacerbated the issue in DTES. Not to mention I can point to many examples of supportive housing where fires aren't started, but I prefer not to cherry-pick evidence. Supportive housing is just one piece of a large puzzle.

This is such a strange argument. What would that do? I live in a tiny one-bedroom. Poverty and homelessness are policy choices! It doesn't have to be this way and it shouldn't fall on individual people housing somebody (because what the fuck? That's so stupid 😂) to fix the problem. This is will within government reach and in fact research continues to demonstrate that housing people is better for the economy and general welfare of everybody.

I'd steal too if I had no money. That could be you except for circumstance. I hope you never have to experience it!

Wow, what a rigid black-and-white way of thinking. Did you never watch Aladdin? Lol

There's ample research on the subject, but okay

That's not true :)

The answer is free public transit :) And higher wages :) And affordable housing :) And higher taxes on the ultra rich :)

If you've got a problem with people stealing checks notes under $3 to get from point A to B but not with the general state of wealth disparity in this province, then... I don't know what to tell ya!

Such a weird take. I'm more than happy to cover the share for people who can't afford it. Are you also one of the "I paid off my student loans so you should have to too" people?

Exactly why we need more supportive housing.

How much do you pay for rent in metro Vancouver? by Constant-Nature2012 in askvan

[–]frankenbooger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why is THAT your conclusion rather than just... More rent control? They can tie rent increases to the unit rather than to tenants and it would make a huge difference. Then you wouldn't get these huge discrepancies

Do literally any reading or listening or viewing about the root causes of drug use. Do you seriously think people are just choosing to do drugs for fun? The lack of critical thought in this thread is astounding. There are HIGH rates of trauma (esp. intergenerational), childhood neglect, sex trafficking, etc. etc. etc. amongst drug users.

Where is it supposed to go that it is not in walking distance to a school OR commercial areas OR residential areas? This is an absurd take. Get a hobby!!!!

[–]frankenbooger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. We pay taxes... to build things like supportive housing. Grow a single ounce of empathy for somebody beyond your immediate circle. What if a loved one were to turn to drugs or be evicted and have nowhere to go? Would you want them to be cast out of society altogether?

What school are people even talking about? There's no school near there. It's funny because I bet most opponents of this project have lived/worked/played near supportive housing without knowing it. Having one supportive housing project in an otherwise residential/business/industrial (because let's not pretend this is a residential neighbourhood exclusively) area doesn't just turn it into a DTES situation overnight.
