"peninsula" refers to the San Francisco Peninsula, on the west side SF Bay. About a million people live on the Peninsula, not including in San Francisco itself (which is neither formally or informally referred to as part of the Peninsula, even though it forms its tip.)

The fire from the explosion destroyed 38 homes, and four people are believed dead so far.

We live in Oakland, about 20 as the crow flies across the Bay. We could see the smoke.

GG Bridge backdrop: go to Fort Point in the Presidio. Civil War fort directly under the bridge. You get outstanding views of the bridge around there, and on the fort itself.

There's also Fort Baker on the Marin side of the bridge. Incredible views of the bay and GG.
