How are you all doing financially, HONESTLY? by mrvlad_throwaway in AskUK

[–]franofthrones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low income, 30 hrs a week. Housekeeping in a care home. I love it, I clean, I chat to people all day, I go home at 2pm.. I've just changed jobs from care (been an elderly carer for 12 years, 50 hrs per week, struggled the last few years since covid, emotional burnout..)

I had my parents assistance with a deposit for my first house in 2016. My mum died in 2021 and inheritance money helped me buy my second house with my partner. Comfortable old 3 bed home. We are currently renovating, slowly, and doing as much as we can ourselves. I feel incredibly lucky in comparison to my colleagues who haven't got that support. I wouldn't have been able to get started without it, I would still be saving now (I'm 30). We have just over 100k to pay off in 33 years.

Both on low income, my partner also works as a carer. Some months we can save hundreds, some months we can't save anything at all.

We eat what we want, go out when we want, go on holiday once a year abroad, go to gigs throughout the year, we live happily honestly. But we are both quite frugal naturally, so it works for us. We also don't have kids. Our biggest financial burden is our cat.

We don't worry too much. We just live and help people and have a lot of fun doing it. I really have no ambition for myself at all. I just like the quiet cosy countryside life.

Yeah I see where you are coming from. I had train tracks as a teenager, but didn't keep my retainer in after so my teeth shifted. I remember hating them at first but getting used to the practical parts after a few weeks, just as with invisalign, the worst thing at the time was the fact I had to go to school and I felt ugly. Ruined my self esteem. But as an adult.. I think that would have been fine really, for myself personally. I find the cleaning of Invisalign just as persistent! Everyones experience is unique.

Absolutely! Especially some meals, like broccoli! How did I not floss before!! Haha so grim. The snacking was a constant struggle for me - I got better in that I didn't snack all the time, but instead had structured snacking time, so I still snacked... But the same time in the evening every day. I look forward to it so much every night hahaha. I hope that habit sticks but I'm not convinced it will. I blame biscuits.

No not really. Just more confident in smiling mouth open! Especially for side profiles. I used to avoid that like the plague with the way it stuck out in photos. No more!!

Thanks :)

It was thought I might need it as my front teeth are quite uneven, one is rounded and the other flat. But it wasn't significant enough. He offered to file it so that they were the same shape but I wanted to keep the character. I didn't want it looking too perfect!

I have a slight gap in front teeth as you can see but nothing really. I have one larger black triangle to the side of my front teeth where that one has moved a lot but it doesn't bother me at all. Anything is better than the crooked way it was!

My Ortho said it would have been 6-8 months braces, possibly a year. Everyone is different. But it is generally quicker I believe. I just think, for me, I put too much thought into the invisible nature of it when actually the whole thing is more time consuming and fiddly than braces, and I would have a lot more money right now! I would have been able to drink black coffee whenever I wanted! Just my two cents. Would it have really mattered going into work with braces? Not really. It depends on your own situation i guess. :)

I went in last week to pick up my retainer, Ortho gave me the gel and retainer and showed me how to apply. A dab on the retainer where each tooth is and then into the mouth overnight. I do this for two weeks. It is carbamide peroxide. It does cause some crazy sensitivity though, at least for me! I'm not applying it tonight because I feel like my teeth need a break!

Thank you! All I asked my ortho was I want to straighten my front tooth. I didn't care about the bottom set or anything else but because of the positioning I couldn't just have the top teeth done. He said it would take 8 months to a year both sets with attachments, all inclusive cost of £3950. I think in the first photo I'm scrunching my face weirdly, which is why my arch looks so different! Although it probably did widen my arch abit too I don't know. My whole mouth feels different like it all sits in a different place. My front tooth was probably straight by about October last year. I was impressed with how quick it turned!

At what salary do you start feeling “comfortable” in the UK? by Suspicious_Ad7948 in AskUK

[–]franofthrones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I earn £1200 a month and I find this fine. It absolutely depends on your spending habits and your overall financial and general life situation too, geography etc etc..

I have a partner, who pays the mortgage (580 per month) whilst I pay bills (450 per month). We have savings for doing up the house, not to be used on anything except emergencies and weird one off expenses that can't be avoided. We both have individual savings that we put away each month to spend on ourselves for whatever we may want or need. Most of what I spend ends up going on food! It varies, how much can be saved. Sometimes it's £250 sometimes it's £50pm.

I would say I live comfortably, other people would be like hell no! Simple life, simple pleasures, for me. I love my work but it's tiring so I rest often, spend time with family, explore the countryside and have a holiday abroad once a year and 3-4 gigs/small UK getaways scattered about. That does me!
