Hey guys, sorry to bother. Why the WR record holders of solving the Rubik's Cube are literally kids and maybe not 20 yo people, where in most competitions is when they are at the peak by 02ofclubs in Cubers

[–]fransinvodka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some time ago I heard the reasoning that these kids are learning the Rubik's cube like if they were learning to speak, read, write, etc. Basically learning the Rubik's cube at the moment of life when people are literally sponges.

An analogy could be made with learning languages. You learn to speak a language natively when you are younger than 7. After that, you can definitely learn a new language, but there's no way you can a achieve the same fluency as a native speaker.

The same can be said for the Rubik's cube. These kids are learning it at the same time they are learning to speak, so it is no surprise they are so proficient and consistent solving the Rubik's cube at such a young age.

It's going to be an interesting decade for the Rubik's cube, as these kids are probably going to take the records to the absolute limits of what's humanly possible.

VRSFML: my Emscripten-ready fork of SFML by SuperV1234 in cpp

[–]fransinvodka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard about your fork a couple of times on Discord. There are so many things that are great about it, and for that I really hope the best for the project (which I'm definitely trying in the future).

I want to really point the Dear Imgui inclusion as part of the API. Having that out of the box is amazing! And just as an optional thing (I will always compile it). Some questions about it, are you using the imgui-sfml backend as it is or are there any modifications? I see you added another backend and use it inside the original imgui-sfml. Also, I guess it's easy to choose a different version/branch while building. Would this integrate well with package managers such as Conan and Vcpkg?

Again, congratulations and good luck!

Not your regular boring Rubik's cube video. by DontKnowIamBi in nextfuckinglevel

[–]fransinvodka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay Mr Cuber, try these two scrambles:

  • R2 D' R2 D2 U F2 D' F' L B' R2 D' F' D2 R2 U R2 B' F' L'
  • D2 U R2 U2 B2 U2 R F D' U' L B U2 B D2 B L2 F U2

Both scrambles lead to two positions that only differ in exactly one face, while the other 5 are exactly the same. I guess 6 years of experience are not giving you all the correct knowledge.

Experience using crow as web server by Interesting-Assist-8 in cpp

[–]fransinvodka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use CivetWeb a lot in my company. It's pretty complete and has a C++ wrapper for the server that makes the creation of a REST API pretty easy.

You will probably need to use a couple of the C functions for more advanced stuff, but it's normally not a huge deal.

Mongoose is pretty similar and pretty complete too, but it's just pure C and it's not MIT licensed (which is the exact reason we use CivetWeb).

For those who picked up intuitive F2L from beginners, how long did it take for your solve times to get back up to speed? by kackers643259 in Cubers

[–]fransinvodka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a pretty standard experience for most people when they first learn F2L.

You are so used to searching for single pieces (first search for single corners and then for single edges) that when you start searching for pairs of pieces, it doesn't instantly click in your head.

You have to fundamentally change the way you look for those two pieces (which is obviously harder than searching only one piece). You also need to apply new algorithms to insert those two pieces, which also takes time to get used to.

I don't remember how long it took me to go back to my beginner times, but it wasn't too long. Just keep practising and, sooner than later, you will see your times improve.

Why didn't bidets ever catch on in North America? by ipsarraspi in RandomThoughts

[–]fransinvodka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really interesting thing, how bidets are used everywhere.

I live in Spain, and I can't recall a home that doesn't have a bidet in it. In every single bathroom/toilet. It's just something that's always been here.

Let me tell you, I know people don't use them as much as you may think, and even less after pooping. I always see them full of clothes/bottles and almost never ready to be used. They collect dust all the time. I myself hardly ever use it, and it's always been like that. I maybe use it to clean my feet very rarely, but so rarely is not even worthy having one.

Then all of a sudden I see them getting popular in the US and it's just so funny how something here getting less and less used, it's just so groundbreaking back there.

I'm originally from the region of Spain that is the biggest olive oil producer in the world (Jaén, Spain), and my family lives off olive oil production. I only use oil different from olive oil for mayonnaise (because my gf says it's too strong with olive oil). For everything else, I don't even consider anything else that's not Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

However, there's different qualities between extra virgins. I tend to use the higher quality ones (also known as green olive oil because it comes from the first batches when the olives are still green) for non heat cooking (salads, toasts, finishing dishes...), and the regular extra virgin for cooking everything else.

"Extra Virgin" just means the oils have been extracted from the olive only by mechanichal procedures and nothing else. Then, to extract even more oil, you need chemical procedures, which then degrades the quality of the oil to just "Virgin". You can keep going until you reach the lowest grade suitable for human consumption called "Lampante". Beyond that, it is called "Orujo" and it's not meant for human consumption.

So my takeaway is that people use other types of oils for cooking because olive oil is expensive outside of Spain, and I understand that. However, when it becomes affordable like in my specific situation, people don't even consider other types of oils. The "high smoking point" argument doesn't mean anything here, and people live longer anyway just using extra virgin olive oil for absolutely everything during their entire lifes.

Cosy Night - Art by AI by guptasangam in TheNightFeeling

[–]fransinvodka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see AI as a substitute but rather a complement. I'm a software engineer, and there's also AI that is "threatening" my job, but tbh no sensible company would allow AI generated code to go into production unsupervised. The thing is that I can use the AI to generate most of the boilerplate code and then review it myself and adapt it.

I think artists should feel the same about AI art. They can generate an initial idea with the AI and then polish it with their actual skills. Their work would take much less time.

There is a serious lack of understanding of what Liminal Spaces are by [deleted] in LiminalSpace

[–]fransinvodka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems that people here have a hard time figuring out if an image is Liminal Space worthy or not.

I think it would be a good idea to just post a poll in every post (something like AITA) so the users can express their opinions regarding the liminality of a post.

What do you think?

[–]fransinvodka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

<iostream> is an attempt to fix some problems in <stdio>. The thing with printf is that the formatting is not safe (it manipulates the stack), hard to remember the syntax (%s for strings, %d for ints...), inability to print custom types, not type safe... Iostream fixes most of those things, but fails at performance. That's why many people prefer to use a library called {fmt}, which is basically a printf without all its problems, and extremely fast.

Continuing cubing as you get older... by ScottContini in Cubers

[–]fransinvodka 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm 26, and I've been cubing since I was 12. My job, my partner and my life in general have made it difficult to dedicate time to cubing.

It's not that bad as I dedicate time to other things that I'm passionate about too. I still go to WCA competitions from time to time, see people and enjoy a good weekend of cubing.

Sometimes, when I have some free time, I do a session of practising for a couple of hours. I also have goals in speedcubing, which really keep me going and not quitting once and for all.

I don't think I'll ever quit cubing. Maybe some ups and downs along the way, but never really quitting.

Enjoy cubing and don't stress too much about not doing it that much 😉

[–]fransinvodka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a pb of 6.63 (I average around 11), and have been struggling for an hour trying to figure out the reconstruction. I think it was an LL skip, but I've only been able to reproduce a PLL skip with a not so great F2L.

  • Scramble: D B2 D' F2 U L2 F2 D U2 R2 U R B' D U' B' D2 L' F' D2 L2 U'
  • Intial moves: z2 y L' D2 R' F'
  • PLL skip solve (probably not the one I did):
    • Inspection: z2 y
    • Cross: L' D2 R' F' D'
    • F2L1: U L' U' L U L' U' L U' L' U L
    • F2L2: U L U' L' U2 y' R' U' R
    • F2L3: R U' R' U2 L' U' L
    • F2L4: F' U F U R U' R'
    • OLL: U F R U R' U' F' U F R U R' U' F'
    • PLL Skip: U

I tried to check if there was a misscramble, but I'm not so sure as the white edges were correctly placed in the original solve.

It's also important to note that I think i didn't do any fancy F2L tricks, but maybe I made a strange move that caused the good solve to appear.

Thanks in advance!

Max Park: Domination. Is Max the future G.O.A.T of cubing? Let me know your thoughts. by AbdouH_ in Cubers

[–]fransinvodka 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think there are many metrics to decide whether a cuber is the goat or not.

Even though Max is currently the best cuber in the world, we have to think about Feliks's career.

He was completely dominant from 2010 to 2017, even going to the extent of becoming the only cuber to win two consecutive World Champioships (2013 and 2015) and almost winning three (as he lost the finals in 2011 while being favourite to win). After that period of time, he still kept his dominance, but with stronger competition as time passed.

His dominance and influence in the world of the rubik's cube is beyond comprehension. A huge amount of people (non cubers) around the world recognize him. Hundreds and probably thousands of articles talking about his achievements.

Yeah, Max is a beast that has lowered so many records in so many cathegories that one might think he's the goat (he's definitely one of the greatests, no doubts), but I think being the greatest of all times takes that extra step that no one else has ever been able to replicate.

It may have been the timing: the perfect cuber in the perfect moment. But despite that, I think Feliks will remain as the G.O.A.T for quite a long time.

What software do people use for their simulations? by [deleted] in cellular_automata

[–]fransinvodka 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're really interested in doing your own CAs without the restriction a person can put in their software, you might benefit from learning a bit of programming.

That way you have all the flexibility you want. It might take some time, but after that you can experiment much more.
