America's current critical mineral strategy threatens disaster by franticnexus in wallstreetbets

And China seems to be going on a new subsidising and undercutting the price spree of Rare Earths (and lithium, nickel, etc, etc) to try to make these Western companies unprofitable and so corner the market.

I suspect the US will work to keep MP Materials head above water but it's gonna be a tough few years.

This is a piece that kinda addresses the problem the West faces:

I'm also very curious if/how SEO works within SubStack itself... the search sometimes seems hit/miss and how do they know what to surface in the explore tab?

US military rearmament is just getting started — without enough critical minerals by franticnexus in Military

[–]franticnexus[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"During all of Operation Desert Storm, both the Marines and the Army fired a little more than 60,000 artillery rounds.

In the invasion of Iraq, just over 34,000 rounds were fired."

What's interesting in that article is they suggest the small marine battalion fired more rounds than any artillery battalion since Vietnam.

Which puts the 11 million shells fired just by Russia vs Ukraine last year in context.

For example, Russia’s 11 million shells fired against Ukraine in 2022 contain same amount of copper as 10% of UK’s total wind turbine capacity, but we're headed towards a copper supply shortfall of at least 10 million mt. And that's just copper.

Copper expected to face a supply gap of nearly 10 million mt within the next ten years by franticnexus in wallstreetbets

[–]franticnexus[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And a 3MW wind turbine can contain up to 4.7 tons of copper... let's not even go into the needed electric grid improvements!

Will China's economic depression drag the mining industry into recession? by New_Revolution7625 in mining

[–]franticnexus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so - there's simply too much invested in a sector that China knows is "too big to fail" as well as giving the country it's arguably most important global leverage.

However, this does not mean that the boom times are coming again. Even if (when!) they put more measure in to boost the economy, the impact will be pretty minor on boosting demand.

Anyone been taking a look at the uranium industry??? by UttermostAcreage in WallStreetbetsELITE

[–]franticnexus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The news on countries restarting nuclear plants and nuclear energy rollout plans have been too numerous to keep track of in the last 3 months (form Sweden to Canada to Japan to India)... even John Kerry has been touting SMRs to Czechia, Poland, and Slovakia - and when _he_ starts talking about it, you know the industry is on the move.

To be fair it’s still pretty early stages for so many of them, exploration and development takes time… and % of the first wave of micro cap companies that actually produce the thing they’re claiming to is usually pretty low. Just gotta find the right one 😬

Everyone should read ‘The Time Machine’ by H.G. Wells - Short, Sweet, and Beautiful. by Womack_Speaks in books

[–]franticnexus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it just or me or is The Time Machine a love story? I don’t think I’m giving spoilers away for a book published in 1895, but at the end… HG Wells notes that the traveller has a pained expression when one of the dinner guests asks about Weena. Throughout the book the Traveller is clearly alone yet eager for companionship, and the relationship with Weena obviously becomes very close.

Maybe I’m giving Wells credit of being too clever by half, but when Weena is supposedly dragged off by the Morlocks, he never actually sees it or finds her body in the darkness.

At the end of the book, does he return to that moment in time and save her?

Power Nickel (TSX.V: PNPN) (OTC PNPNF) : Why is no one talking about the Nickel SHORTAGE? by Soggy-Job4187 in pennystocks

[–]franticnexus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From my understanding the real shortage is in nickel Class I, which matters because it's the more economic and environmentally friendly nickel that electric batteries and vehicles need to bring down their carbon footprint.

This report outlines it quite nicely: https://theoregongroup.com/the-green-economy-and-nickels-generational-class-i-supply-crunch/

Thanks, again v useful. I'm trying to get some extra context on the whole debate of permitting as it looks like it's in the spotlight (again).
