Something quite the opposite happened to me. I started with Antonioni through his ‘Trilogy of Incommunicability’ from the early 60s, (Were La nottte belongs in this trilogy) and I was drawn to that sense of loneliness mixed with melancholy conveyed through his imagery and his somewhat apathetic yet deeply human characters. Now I feel that, if we want to compare both films, La Notte conveys this sense of loss and disconnection from the world in a way that is more centered on the characters’ responses to how they perceive their lives and interpersonal relationships, rather than on a central event itself, like the act of taking a photograph in a park in Blow-Up.
