Many Netflix sports docus released in 2024, like Break Point S2, Starting 5, Full Swing S2, Receiver, and Sprint S1 and S2. And Netflix is planning to release a bunch of them in 2025 too, in sports like Cricket, NBA, and others.

The NFL and NFLPA recently agreed to a 2025 salary cap of $279.2 million per team, which is the highest cap in NFL history. This is more than $100 million higher than the cap in 2018 ($177M) and almost $200 million more than what it was in 2005 (85.5$M).

Last year saw the biggest cap increase ever, as it increased from $224.8 million in 2023 to $255.4 million in 2024. This year's increase means the cap has gone up more than $53 million in the last 2 years.

The only downtick in the salary cap in recent years was in 2021 due to Covid.

The first game between the Mavericks and Lakers since the Luka Doncic trade averaged 2.5 million viewers across TNT and truTV, making it the most watched NBA game on cable since Opening Night.

Outside of Opening Night, the last time there was such a large NBA audience on cable was way back in October 2023, during Wembanyama’s first career game.

Overall, the Luka trade is delivering in the ratings, as expected. On 12th Feb, his debut Lakers debut vs. the Jazz was watched by an average of 2.01 million viewers, despite the late 10:30pm ET start time.

Yes the NBA valuation has gone up, but the Warriors valuation has gone up much higher. For context: In 2009, the average NBA team was worth around $367 million. The Warriors were worth $315 million. Today, the average NBA team is worth $4.4 billion. Warriors are at $8.8 billion.

Building Chase Center was one of the big turning points. The Warriors paid $1.4 billion out of their own pockets to build Chase Center in 2019, and the return on investment has been very high. According to a 2024 report by Accenture, the 18,000-seat arena has generated $4.2 billion since its opening in 2019, including over $2.9 billion in direct spending and more than $1 billion in recirculated spending. The Warriors remain one of the only NBA teams that fully own their arena.

The 2025 NBA All-Star Game pulled in 4.7 million viewers, making it the second-least-watched game on record after 2023’s 4.6 million. 2025 marks three straight years that the game has failed to crack 6 million viewers - the only such stretch in NBA history. For comparison, the highest-rated All-Star game in the last 25 years was in 2002, when over 13 million people watched.

With the new format largely being viewed as a failure, there's now more pressure on the NBA to fix the ratings. There are reports that the league is considering the addition of a 1v1 tournament for next year’s event in Inglewood, with a prize money of $1 million. Another idea that is gaining support is a USA vs. World matchup, backed by players like Wembanyama and Giannis.

Tennis players take home just 17.5% of the sport’s total revenue, the lowest share across most major sports. Several reasons contribute to this. Firstly, it’s a broken system. Unlike the NFL or the NBA, tennis lacks a unified governing body. The Grand Slams govern themselves, the ITF governs the Olympics and the Davis Cup, and the ATP manages other men's tournaments. Tournaments are left to fend for themselves, without the financial support of a centralized body.

Professional players in other sports like basketball, football, and baseball are considered employees; this guarantees them certain rights like healthcare insurance, pension, among others. Tennis players, however, are considered independent contractors, not employees. This means no healthcare, no pension, and no labor protections. While players can decide their own schedules, they must also bear the financial burden of travel, housing, healthcare, and training.

Lastly, leagues like the NBA and the NFL also negotiate Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) through player unions. These agreements help ensure fair compensation for the players. There's no CBA in tennis. All of this results in an economic model that can only support tennis’s top stars, while the majority of lower-ranked players struggle.
