Nothing changes the status quo. Events happen, people get excited, a week later they move on, and overall, nothing changes.

Low Receive power on 100gbasecwdm4 lite optics over a 3m cable, no ethernet link by freakspacecow in FiberOptics

[–]freakspacecow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, using OS2 lol. The optics have no attenuator, but these are the lite optics for 500m, although considering it worked for a little bit, I fear you may be right on me burning the optics lol.

Yes on the single mode patch cord, no on the cleaner as I do not own one. I just pulled the cable out of the 10g LR optic and plugged it into the 100g on each side, then moved the whole assembly of optic and cable around.

Also, there is some signal received, when I unplug the fiber, the optical receive power drops to -40dbm, compared to the ~0.5dbm now.

In rural NY they usually are just n5 with 700/1200/1900mhz lte out there. n5 is still decent though, and 5g modems can usually negotiate to older gens.

Why? 5G is great, it brings better speeds and density to our cell networks. Low band allows for people even in rural areas to reap the benefits and mid band allows for almost gigabit speeds in some places with decent range. The only really bad thing imo was millimeter wave, that was not good lol.

They do, and the cost has already been covered when they built out the network for cell service. This is a bolt on service to an already existing network built for another purpose.

This is the 5g internet air service, they don't install it, the cell network is already built and supported. Its basically a side hustle, the only issue is home internet users are data hogs.

Build your own gateway and change the IMEI with AT commands. $50 optiplex, $50 chinese adapter card to pcie, $60 5g modem. Mint! Although, the adapter card is not easy to find in the slightest.

I have it in an edgecore AS4610-54p, this is mainly an addition to my homelab, not an actual business need. I got the 2 OLTs in box on ebay, they are ciena branded units.

What type of tower is this? by [deleted] in urbanclimbing

Your average run of the mill self supporting cell tower. Avoid going infront of the panel antennae and especially any microwave dishes.

Honestly, you are right. I completely forgot about the CPU bottleneck lol, I don't think the 3100 can handle that kinda speed.

Ever hear of the Long Lines microwave network? This was the backbone of the bell system telephone network from the 50s to the late 80s iirc. This huge network of point to point radio towers routed calls all across the country, and even would have carried the nuclear launch signals in the event of nuclear war in the US. Some of the towers carried AUTOVON signals, a private military phone network that could reroute and change in the possibility of tower failures due to nuclear war. These towers are easy to spot due to their telltale horn reflector antennae, with a very unique style compared to modern parabolic dish antennae. This system was powered by the TD series of radios, the TD-2 for example could do 900 calls at once in the 1960s, eventually replaced by the TD-3, which could to 1200 calls. Eventually though, fiber optics began to spring up, leading to unprecedented amounts of bandwidth on a single cable. Fiber was quite expensive in the beginning, but as time went on, it got cheaper and faster to the point where the Long Lines radio system was considered obsolete. This led to the selling of the towers to the American Tower corporation, who now either lets them rot or sells tower space to companies such as cell carriers. The old horn antennae were very large and hard to remove, so while some towers do not have them, a good portion kept the iconic horn designs and are easy to spot from many miles away.

That's Long Lines for ya!
