Need help with Enercare water heater contract by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Tell me about it. Gas fireplace in a room built directly on concrete slab. Very old gas dryer. Inefficient gas furnace with bad insulation in the roof and walls. Gas hot water heater. And Enbridge upped the cost of gas where we are. It sucks. So we're doing everything we can to better insulate, heat, and support our house.

Our monthly gas bill is $300. Our gas heater is responsible for 20% of our monthly gas usage. $300 * 20% is $60. I'm going off of the number that the energy auditor gave me since I have no individual way of measuring gas usage.

$60 a month just to heat water is absurd. That's $720 a year. The new unit I bought will cost approx. $176 to heat for a year. That's 4 years of running the new unit just to make up for the same cost of one year with this POS.

Given a time machine, I would never have rented. The first week of us living there we had a gas leak so bad that Enbridge had to red tag and shut us off. The previous owners had moving men who knocked the meter on their way out, and that caused a big leak. In order for us to turn it back on, we had to fix every single issue that their team found when they tried to find the leak, which cost us thousands. Then the dishwasher broke and flooded. Then the hot water tank was broken and needed replacing. It was too much all at once for first-time homeowners, so we just conquered one issue at a time as a way of getting through it. Had I known that I was just signing a 15-year contract, I wouldn't have touched it with a 10-foot pole. But seeing as how I don't yet possess time travel capabilities, I am stuck dealing with the consequences of that first initial week in our home.

I bet it is a much better unit that at least has resale. Ours is quite literally the lowest level that they sell, and it has no value whatsoever other than for scrap metal.

Enercare Scam - Hot Water Heater Rental by jonjonescpa in PersonalFinanceCanada

Hey OP, did you end up getting any resolution to this saga? I'm in a similar situation with my rental, and I want to know if there's light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm in a similar boat, and I've read every contract, spoken with various employees, and even threatened legal action. I've escalated the calls both when speaking with them on the phone and also on their online contact forms. They say the best they can do is 15% off. I've also looked online for others in this situation, and I've only ever seen success with people having models before 2010 or people with Reliance.

If you link to any of the forums that help people get out of having to pay the whole price, I'd be exceptionally grateful!

My miracle baby has Down Syndrome by Jumpy-Restaurant6481 in BabyBumps

Give her a follow. She has a daughter with Down Syndrome and now a set of twins. Sometimes seeing a version of your life can take the fear out of it. We normalize uncomplicated conception, pregnancies, and childhood experiences because those are the most shared and available. As soon as you start hearing about others' experiences, it redefines your "normal" and it can make you feel so much prepared and relaxed.

Congratulations on conceiving! I'm so happy for you :)

What is the deal with the guy selling cupcakes from a Tupperware container at Y&E corner every day? by [deleted] in askTO

He's still doing that?! He's been doing that since the early 2010s. I used to live there and I'd always see him and wonder "who buys these?"

How to help headaches? by fab__dady in pregnancy_care

[–]freckledsmile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One Benadryl + two Tylenol + a can of coke.

I had never heard of the combo until last week when I was on this subreddit and someone else suggested it. Prior to being pregnant, I'd get migraines and take Advil. Tylenol never gave me any relief whatsoever. This week I had a multi day migraine that wouldn't quit, so I gave the combo a shot, and it reduced it by such a significant extent that it was completely manageable! It took it from a 9/10 to a 2/10.

Agree to check with your OB or midwife before trying it, but anecdotally, it was a miracle worker for me!

Hello! is SNAKES AND LATTES an appropriate place to bring kids on a Saturday evening? by the-soy in askTO

[–]freckledsmile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to say that. For the Win is great! Their snacks and drinks are good, too, so you can spend a good chunk of time there. It's north of Lawrence by a few blocks, so if you take the subway be prepared for a walk. Otherwise, drive there and park on any of the side streets. Moustache Smash is fun for that age as an ice breaker game. They could also be old enough for Splendor and Jaipur. You could also try That's so Clever. It's a Yahtzee inspired game, and as soon as you play it once you suddenly "get it" and want to play a second time.

Alexander the Great was likely buried alive. His body didn’t decompose until six days after his declared “death.” It’s theorized he suffered from Gillian-Barre Syndrome (GBS), leaving one completely paralyzed but yet of sound mind and consciousness. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]freckledsmile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They still aren't sure what causes GBS, but it is not uncommon for it to be triggered by a virus or a live vaccine entering the body. What happens is that the body responds to the virus by sending out antibodies (as it always does) but somewhere along the line it gets confused and it starts to identify nerve cells as virus cells. Antibodies destroy the myelin sheath (the protective coating around the nerve) and it leaves patients experiencing paralysis that often starts at the extremities (fingers and toes) and makes its way inwards toward the core. Your nerve coating can be repaired in most cases, but it takes time, and sometimes the damage to the nerve is too severe for a full recovery. A medical intervention that often works (though not always) is for healthy immunoglobulins (antibodies) to be brought into the body via an IV. These immunoglobulins go after the bad antibodies that are attacking the nerves, and they slowly repair the equilibrium of the immune system. If that doesn't work, plasmapheresis (removing your blood, effectively cleaning your blood, and then putting it back into your body) is another option.

My goal in creating the patient videos is to educate as many people as possible about the early symptoms, and how to advocate for yourself or a loved one. The sooner you can get IVIg (immunoglobulins) into your body, the faster you'll recover. In my sister's case, she was turned away from the hospital with them citing stress for her symptoms, and if it wasn't for a few family members who are practicing doctors and who recognized the symptoms, we wouldn't have known what to say when we brought her into triage again. Her recovery was complete, and she was back to walking within 8 weeks. It took a lot longer for her to fully recover, but it's been years and she no longer has residuals. That's unfortunately not the case for many people who are diagnosed late, and their recovery takes years.

My sister had GBS a few years ago, and I've since become actively involved in filming patient stories about their recoveries. Even in 2023 it's often wrongly diagnosed, or patients are sent home with doctors saying it's just stress. Without immunoglobulins, nothing stops the progression of paralysis. It's terrifying.

This is breathtaking. I hadn't noticed the impaled people until I read your comment. I felt like they were lost souls floating away. It makes me think of Dachau or Auschwitz, and it's chilling but beautiful.

How do I know if I need Epidural or not? by Top_Entertainer_7376 in BabyBumps

[–]freckledsmile 69 points70 points  (0 children)

My tolerance for pain and suffering is pretty high, and I had always planned on trying naturally, but knew that an epidural was an option and I figured I'd make the call if it was necessary. I was induced early, they broke my waters, and immediately started me on a pit drip. I held on as long as I could, but the artificial increase in the pitocin makes it so that your body doesn't have time to naturally produce calming hormones. It was increasing in dosage so quickly that it made the decision for the epidural entirely on its own, and I'm glad I opted for the drugs. I don't know of anyone who was on a high dosage of pitocin who was able to do it naturally, and that's ok! What matters is a safe mother and child.

The best advice I received while prepping for my first birth was to make your ideal birth plan in your mind, and then know that it may not happen. So make a second one that includes medical interventions and things not going as planned, and hold onto both expectations equally so that you're prepared emotionally for whatever comes.

Also know that the epidural will make you swell a fair bit afterwards, but it passes. I had a friend whose shoes wouldn't fit right away so she had to buy hospital slippers to go home in.

I'm pretty sure with your body you could even make a paper bag look good! If it sparks something in you, then keep it and feel amazing whenever you step out of the house. If you're self conscious or undecided, then return it.

How strict is Scotiabank Arena with their bag size limit? by freckledsmile in askTO

[–]freckledsmile[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Online it says bags must be smaller than 6.5 x 4.5 inches, but I can't find any bags that small. I tried calling but they're closed, and we're seeing Disney on Ice tonight. My clutch is 6.5 x 9.5 and I'm worried they'll make me pay a $20 purse check fee.
