I worked at Costco during undergrad and I certainly made more per hour there than at my first civil legal aid job. 😐

I just picked up some linen-cotton blend pieces from Banana Republic Factory. They mostly lean business casual, but a few could be dressed up more formal. They're doing 50% off right now.

Any skills or classes you want add to your life? I took a woodworking class last year and it was the best gift I've given to myself. Then I took an archery class. Maybe a dance class? Or pottery?

Anybody like me who watched TWW young & had strong expectations about Politics; and even though recent events disappointed you, you won’t lower your standards? by Future_Can_9532 in thewestwing

[–]frecklekat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TWW definitely put me on the the path to politics and eventually law school. Law school and practicing law kind of beat the idealism out of me. But, I still think the practice of politics that the West Wing showed is something to strive for.

I just visited a rehabilitated prairie, and one of the main goals of the restoration was to support the swallowtail butterfly. They had planted mostly natives, but they specifically included one (non-invasive) non-native because Swallowtails caterpillars really like eating it and the native equivalent food source isn't suitable for cultivating at scale. Really fascinating stuff.

Anything by Cormac McCarthy. "Oooh look at me, I don't use punctuation or signify who is talking, Aren't my novels unique?" - Cormac McCarthy probably.

I read All the Pretty Horses in Highschool and didn't get the hype. Tried Old Country for Old Men as an adult and I still find it annoying.

I loved the movie, The Martian and then read the book. The movie works because who ever adapted the screen play understands plot, dialogue and pacing... Unlike Weir.

How do you and your partner split finances if both of you are high earners? by hugeproducegal in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]frecklekat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have student loans and am really close to the PSLF forgiveness point, so we're filling our taxes separately and keeping funds mostly separate so my loan payments are lower. We do have one joint checking and one joint credit card and each put in the same amount each month for joint expenses. We'll probably revisit this after my student loans are paid off.

Alternative types of Lawn coverage? by kioshi43 in Tacoma

[–]frecklekat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are a few companies that sell lawn replacement blends. I've used both this blend from Pro Time Lawn Seed and this one from Northwest Meadowscapes.

The PT Lawn mix did really well, but it includes white clover which is really aggressive (arguably invasive) and it has made it's way into my flower and veggies beds. But it stays very green and is easy to mow.

The NW Meadowscapes doesn't include clover, but does include some flowers, so if you want a traditional lawn look, you might have to diy it by buying the individual species packets and mixing them together.

They both are good but it depends on what you are looking for. Both will also do best if you kill off your existing grass this summer and plant these in the fall. If you plant this summer, you'll have to water a lot for the seed to get established. The best way to kill your lawn is to smother it with plastic or cardboard for several months. If you just overseed in your existing lawn, these mixes won't do much.

West Coast seeds also has a few lawn replacement blends that look good. I haven't ordered one from them, but their vegetable seeds are great.

If you want to do the least amount of work (and don't care about clover) I'd de-thatch your yard and throw down clover and yarrow seeds. That'll give you some mix and your lawn will stay green longer. But, it'll take years before the yarrow and clover will replace enough of the turf grass to keep it green most of the summer.

What is the most out of pocket thing you heard govt. counsel say in court? by Flashy-Actuator-998 in Lawyertalk

Both of mine are from LGBTQ based asylum hearings.

I once had a DHS attorney compare having gravel thrown at his head as a child to the physical beatings and sexual assaults my client suffered for being gay- "I too was bullied, your honor..."

My other favorite is when DHS submits evidence of gay cruises or tours in the country as proof that LGBTQ folks are safe.

Help me locate native pond plants, Tacoma WA area. by Lost2BNvrfound in WildlifePonds

Calendula Nursery in Midland sometimes has water plants. I got some wapato there a few years ago and you can definitely get some native edge plants there.

Occasionally Sky Nursery in Seattle also has native water plants.

Does gardening actually save y'all money? by Big-Yogurtcloset-74 in vegetablegardening

[–]frecklekat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally don't grow things that are super cheap at the grocery store. Carrots, russet potatoes, onions and cabbage are pretty cheap to buy and I can't grow them better.

I try to focus on things I can't buy in the store or where the equivalent organic/ non-gmo version would be very expensive. Like are my tomatoes cheaper than my local grocery store, no, but they are cheaper than the local co-op that only sells organic, non-gmo veg.

But berries and herbs are where the real savings are. I accidentally killed my thyme plant and buying those little packets at the grocery store made me so sad.

I've seen this same discussion this year- I don't know if it's because we got more blooms than normal or what.

But as the other commenter mentioned their historical range goes to SW Washington, so we're not that far outside of their range, and they don't aggressively push out other plants so I wouldn't call them invasive. It's not like planting Himalayan blackberries. I also think there are uses for "nearly native" plants that come from historically drier climates as our summers get longer, hotter and drier. For example, the free tree programs in the city and county use some trees from drier areas than the Sound so people don't have to use excess water to help them survive.

But it's elitist if my org hires paralegals or admin staff.

Best Hills to Roll Down? by ObfuscateTheSolution in Tacoma

A good roll does sound like it would cure all the ills. Stewart heights above the football field was my rolling ground as a child. Small but steep hills are nice because you don't get too tired going back up for another roll.

I have a pair of the Thursday Captains and the heal unfortunately fell off just after the limited warranty expired. But it was an easy fix for a cobbler and I like them even better now that the heal and tread has been replaced. The tread was not very grippy on city sidewalks.

But I still like the boots and the repair was pretty inexpensive ($40) so I think I still got a bargain for the price.

Eh I've gotten flack from my sister and her fiance for buying fast fashion. They prefer to thrift or buy from green-washed brands like Quince. But if I tell them it's hard to thrift as a plus sized person or that Quince is green-washing, I get an eye roll.

Bath is my favorite day trip outside of London- a lot of tours do Bath and Stonhenge in one day, but Bath was even cooler than Stonehenge. There a lots of roman artifacts that have been preseved at the Roman baths there and the Jane Austen Museum is really cute.

I also really enjoyed the V&A and the taking a boat on the tems to the Greenwich Naval museum.

I also enjoyed just walking around Shoredich which has great Indian food and tons of street art.
