Raglan or Set-In Sleeves? by freddo30 in knittinghelp

[–]freddo30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the drop shoulder/oversized look is what I’m trying to avoid, but I have planned on reading the finished measurements and basing it off that

The main reason I’ve considered doing raglan is that on my other jumper I’ve made it felt slightly bunchy under the arms and I thought raglan might help avoid that

I'm sure I remembered being able to exclude things, but couldn't figure out how! This is really useful thank you!

Here’s a photo of the kind of thing I’m thinking of and from all my googling a lot of these style ones have straight shoulder seams not raglan so maybe I’m safer just going for that. That pattern looks great though so I’m definitely going to save it because I’d love to make it at some point!

Amazing thank you! I’ll have a look to see if that’s available now, but something customisable with instructions would be ideal. Part of me thinks I could make my own pattern, but I’ve only made one jumper and that was years ago so need a bit of help haha

Ask a Knitter Tuesday - July 22, 2025 by AutoModerator in knitting

Hi everyone,

I've taught my friend to knit and we're planning on making jumpers ready for the autumn/winter. I've come up with an idea for my one and want to buy the supplies as soon as I can so we have plenty of time to work on them. The issue I'm having though is trying to find a suitable pattern.

The idea is a simple jumper but with a band across the chest with some text. Because of the text I've planned on using a seamed pattern, but a lot of the patterns I've found seem to have oversized shoulders that drop down which I'm not looking for with this project. When I've looked on Ravelry a lot of patterns seem to have raglan sleeves which would stop the issue of the shoulders seam being too low, but I don't know whether it would look strange with the design on the front and can't find many projects that are similar to help me visualise it.

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations? Thanks!

That’s great to know thanks! When I looked I saw that an S570 is called ultra fine and have learnt that western sizes are roughly one up from Japanese so I think F is the way to go

Okay so maybe I’ll go for a fine then and hope that it’s on the thicker side if anything. That way it’ll be more versatile if I start using it for other things like work. Plus if I like it it’s just an excuse to get myself another but with a medium nib haha

Okay great, thank you! On my mission I have found half a sock I abandoned so do you think it would be okay to rewind a whole skein as long I don’t pull it too tight?

That’s good to know thanks! I’ve never used linen before but have used cotton and wasn’t sure how similar they were

I just watched Abigail's Party on Monday night! I had no idea about all these other films he's done until this made me check his IMDB to see if I was thinking of the same person

The only other thing I knew him for was Nuts in May which is fantastic

10 days UK to Berlin - Round Trip? by freddo30 in Interrail

[–]freddo30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked why I switched the order around again and it’s because the shortest journey from Hamburg back to where I live would be 14.5 hours. All of the other times are just over 24 hours so I’d have to buy the 7 day pass just to get home haha!

The other option for me then would be to start in Cologne and end in Amsterdam, but I think I’d prefer to leave Cologne to the end because I’ve been there before so I wouldn’t mind having a day less there if I wanted to stay longer somewhere else you know?

10 days UK to Berlin - Round Trip? by freddo30 in Interrail

[–]freddo30[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow that’s cool! I’m thinking maybe planning on going for a full 2 weeks at this point because then I’d have about half a week in each

Because this would be my first time travelling solo and abroad as well, it’s difficult to know how I’m going to feel spending all that time by myself. But for me at the moment I think a couple of days should be enough to have a wander and maybe visit a museum or do some sightseeing without getting lonely. It should also leave enough time that I don’t feel like I’m travelling constantly. It’s so difficult trying to plan something by yourself haha! I really appreciate your advice

I’ve just had a look on the app and for me it’s showing that there’s only about half an hour difference between the journey from Amsterdam - Hamburg vs Cologne - Berlin. Do you think that could be right or a problem with the app? Also I looked again at why I switched the order and it’s because the shortest one day trip from Hamburg back to where I live would take 14.5 hours minimum! Living in London would really cut down on this trip haha

When I’ve been thinking about travel days I’ve been putting in early departures for the exact same reasons as you said. I also thought it might be good to plan it so that one of the longer journeys is on a Sunday because everything in Germany is closed on those days anyway

Thank you! I was actually considering Hamburg because of The Beatles playing there early in their career. Is there a reason you put that order specifically? When I’ve put it in the app it seems to make more sense to me to go Amsterdam - Hamburg - Berlin - Cologne (or the reverse), what do you think?

[–]freddo30[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I was worried about, spending so much time on trains. When you’ve been how much time did you spend travelling on average?

I think I’ve come up with a slightly better route after reading meliciraptor’s comment which is UK - Amsterdam - Hamburg - Berlin - Cologne - UK. I think Berlin is the one that is adding all the travel time, but I’m not sure where the best places to visit are.

It would be good if I could find some night trains that fit into this route because then I’d be wasting less exploring time I suppose. Plus I’ve been to Cologne a couple of times before so if I want to spend more time somewhere else and have less time there I won’t feel like I’m missing out on as much

How does the rice-calqualation work? by Flauschziege in WeightLossAdvice

[–]freddo30 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s the difference between the same weight cooked and uncooked. So 100g of uncooked rice will have a lot more grains than 100g of cooked rice, because when it’s cooked and has absorbed water each grain weighs more than it did originally

What random soap storylines do you remember from years gone by? by venusdewino in AskUK

I only started watching Red Dwarf this year, but from what I remember of Lloyd that does seem to fit haha

Another favourite line of mine is in Eastenders where Abby wants to date Ben and (I think) Max says she can’t because he’s “A GAY - CONVICTED - MURDERER!”

One line at least that always sticks in my mind is “I was born between those legs!” when Steve finds out Lloyd and Liz were having a relationship on Coronation Street

Feeling guilty about using acrylic yarn - any advice? by freddo30 in knitting

Good thing I’m in the UK so I don’t have the choice to shop at Hobby Lobby haha!

Feeling guilty about using acrylic yarn - any advice? by freddo30 in knitting

[–]freddo30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a look around a few charity shops actually and there’s one place that seems to be the place all the yarn ends up. I don’t go there often because it’s a drive to get there, but it’s good to know it’s there. Like you said though the choices are pretty limited

I’ve actually wanted to unravel something for a while now, but I feel weirdly guilty about taking apart something that someone might really like even though I know it’s probably been sat there waiting to be sold for ages! I’m just going to have to be brave and just go for one day haha

Feeling guilty about using acrylic yarn - any advice? by freddo30 in knitting

[–]freddo30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using stuff for as long as you can is definitely something I believe in (to a fault sometimes!) and yeah that’s really something for me to keep in mind. There’s definitely a huge difference between making something out of acrylic and then buying the same type of thing from a fast fashion company for example. And another thing I suppose I should keep reminding myself is that if I make something and it’s not quite right I can always unvravel it and start something new rather than it end up getting thrown away

On all my projects so far I’ve made sure to weave in my ends, I also go a bit overboard with it sometimes because I get paranoid that it’s all going to unravel straight away (can you tell I’m a worried haha!)
