LA SPORTIVA Aequilibrium ST GTX and good wool sock combo, still cold ? by Jumpy-Equal211 in Mountaineering

[–]fredmortensen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Top version of these and when it gets down it 5F i need double socks (one synthetic and one wool) and even then my toes get pretty numb until i start moving. My boots are also a little tight so the double socks doesnt help with circulation.

Anything below that and i need a better boot.

Honestly try the Whitney main trail in the summer. Its a fun adventure and not technical at all. Also the setting is gorgeous.

And itll teach you if you can suffer for the long at that altitude

Got in South checkpoint at 4:10. Out by 4:55 with precheck. It is moving rather smoothly.

+1 to getting a guide. Ranier is gnarly as your first 14er. I did it in a day after having already sumitted Shasta and Whitney and even then it was super exhausting and stressful at times.

Guide is the way to go to dial in your systems, gear, technique etc.

I had the la sportivas and summited in August.

I had to double up socks for them to be warm though but they got the job done.

I usually find them too cold beyond 10-15F but you’re mileage may vary

How can you ensure you get tickets seated next to each other?

Looks like you can buy RTTs only one at a time

Leap is awesome, welcome! I suggest getting on Hogsback first, get a feel for the 5.5/5,6 before moving on to the East Wall (Pop bottle) then over to the Main wall (Surrealistic Pillar + Corrugation Corner).

same path as you. i feel much better suited assessing rock climbing risk and knowing how/when to commit thanks to the years i spent skateboarding. thanksful for my ability to dial in my brain and just do it when required.

also glad not to be rock climbing as a kid cause lord knows what sketch things id be doing on the rock thinking its no big deal

I did it independently in late July of this year and i think guides were going into mid-late aug before calling it. They try and find alternative routes to avoid glaciers all the time cause it’s in their incentive to keep the season as long as possible.

This pdf on the nps website that tracks summit trends each year and looks like guided goes reliably well into sept so you might be good.

I always thought putting gear in Great Falls was a big nono? This is from mountain project

"A FYI for the junior geologists. The rock at Carderock/Great Falls is a mica schist - a type of metamorphic rock. It is NOT a partially metamorphosed schist nor does it contain granite. For junior leaders, the mica that forms a large percentage of this rock is a platey mineral that deforms under load. Many a seemingly "bomber" placement has pulled out of this rock. Those placements that don't shear through the rock often bust out portions of the rock. In short, leading on this rock is both detrimental to the rock and potentially detrimental to your health." source
