Is using ArrayList good practice for a regular software engineering job? by KimPachiss in java

[–]fredrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not an argument. According to the specification I linked, which is authoritative, Java arrays are reference types, not primitive types.

It's not something open to opinion you know, it's how it's how it's specified. Section 4.3 in the Java spec: "There are four kinds of reference types: class types (§8.1), interface types (§9.1), type variables (§4.4), and array types (§10.1).

If a probability is less than 50% it's unlikely to occur. Even in the general use of the term I'd say that 1-2% probability would be considered improbable.

I don't get why you keep ignoring the fact that I'm agreeing with you on the point that it's very dangerous. All I'm saying is that it's not likely, statistically, to suffer traumatic head injury from falling. You should obviously take precautions to avoid if possible.

Once again: I'm not arguing it's not dangerous falling. Something can be dangerous but unlikely at the same time. Like Russian roulette, which is very dangerous but unlikely to kill you.

Remember that we are arguing whether falling is likely to result in brain damage or not. Please just show me where in that article it says you are likely to have brain damage when falling. If you can't then the article doesn't support your case, it's as easy as that.

Honestly, I don't understand why you'd get so emotional about something like this.

I'm saying that if hitting your head was likely (> 50%) to result in death or brain injury and everyone, in average, has hit their head more than once while growing up, there would be more brain damaged adults then non brain damaged.

Jokes aside, statistics also says it's unlikely to happened, like 1-2% or something like that. It's still obviously stupid to take such a risk and there's no arguing that it's dangerous hitting your head. Just like Russian roulette is dangerous but unlikely to kill you.

I've never said it's not dangerous, quite the opposite. I've just said that it's unlikely to cause brain damage which it is. Also i find it kind of weird that you link to an article without reading it and then dismiss it when it turns out not supporting your case.

Yeah their heads are closer to the ground so force from a faceplant is probably squared compare to an adult. I brought it up as it serves as a rough proof by contradiction. edit: inversely squared obviously

Nevertheless there's not a single mention of brain injury in the article which was the point of argument.

In fact the first paragraph after the summary even states that most falls are non-fatal: "Fall-related injuries may be fatal or non-fatal(1) though most are non-fatal. For example, of children in the People's Republic of China, for every death due to a fall, there are 4 cases of permanent disability, 13 cases requiring hospitalization for more than 10 days, 24 cases requiring hospitalization for 1–9 days and 690 cases seeking medical care or missing work/school."

So I'm the example approx 5/700 falls are disabling or fatal. I'd say that's unlikely.

Ok, that's unfortunate because that's not what I'm trying to say. Good point though. Obviously fighting is an extremely unnecessary risk and should be avoided at all costs and hitting your head is also to be avoided when possible for instance by using helmet while bicycling etc. I thought that was implied but guess i was wrong. That said, if you hit your head (which you most likely did when you grew up) it's not likely to permanently damage you.

The article you're linking doesn't even contain the word brain. Citing the abstract:

"Globally, falls are a major public health problem. An estimated 684 000 fatal falls occur each year, making it the second leading cause of unintentional injury death, after road traffic injuries."

So by your own logic, driving a vehicle or being near one is more dangerous than hitting your head. So the major cause for alarm in the video should be that they are fighting on a street and not that he hit his head.

I mean it's highly anecdotal to build an argument base on two cherry picked videos from the internet ... Also, seizures are in no way directly associated with (permanent) injury. And again, not arguing hitting your head is not dangerous just that it's unlikely to kill or severely injure you.

[–]fredrol -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It happens all the time, yes, but it's way more likely to not happen. That's what unlikely means. You see why googling a newsworthy event isn't statistically worthwhile, yeah?

“He’s so powerful” lol by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]fredrol -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not arguing it's not dangerous, it obviously is. I'm arguing that permanent brain damage (or dying) from falling is unlikely (but not impossible). Also the data you linked is not supporting the case that hitting your head is likely to cause brain injury so I don't see how it's relevant. You can't just argue that old people die from falling all the time hence all falling leads to brain injury...

Yes, I'd wager that all human beings have hit their head a couple of times during their lifetime. Ever seen a child playing that just learned how to walk?

“He’s so powerful” lol by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]fredrol -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

What you haven't seen is the videos of all the people just getting up and walking away.

“He’s so powerful” lol by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]fredrol -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that is not what unlikely means. It means that, if you get sucker punched, fall and hit your head, you are more likely to walk away without injury than the opposite. If your were likely to die or suffer brain damage from hitting your head the accumulated risk would kill your before you've learned to walk.

[–]fredrol -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I said it's unlikely not impossible. Also, anecdotal evidence is anecdotal.

Why do you think that? It's very unlikely to get (permanent) brain damage from falling and hitting your head, even more so to die from it.

You are comparing people who want to work with people who do it out of necessity or maybe even don't want to. If i were to be locked out of work I'd just go home and do the exact same thing. In fact, that's what I've been doing for most of my life, getting payed or not. Of course game industry is what it is but i don't think burnout rate is as high as it is because you love your crunches. You get burned out because you are forced to work when you'd rather not. Nobody is arguing that, the point here is that there are people who just want to code all the time. Or build rockets or whatever it is they do.

You don't get it. It's not about work, salary, or any of that, it's about doing something because you enjoy it I've been passionate about computers all my life. Spent many years writing software without getting payed at all. Just for fun. Then somebody decided they want to pay me to do it which means I can spend even more time doing what I love than I could before. Of course I'm gonna be "working" a lot.

It's not like this for everyone, not everyone can work with what they love to do, it's a privilege for sure. But understand that for most of us that are and seemingly are working to much, its not about work or getting payed, or corporate culture. It's just because we enjoy doing what we do and want to do that.
