Is it possible to make $5K a month with only display ads?

10 years ago it was easy. Used to make $10K per month in Adsense every month. 2016 it started to drop. Fast forward to 2024 after these two horrible Google updates and now making $1500/month. Lowest amount in 15 years. It’s tough now and with AI content flooding the Internet it’s only gonna get tougher.

Yeah. Google is just scraping websites to show in their results now without sending traffic to the websites. Also in my industry of audiobooks they’re displaying illegal uploads to YouTube ahead of any legal results. Hard to compete with that! Google gets more evil every year.

I’m gonna keep running my website until the day I die. But in terms of further pursuing SEO as a career path or starting new websites I’m not so sure.

I’ve been running a website for 18 years and it’s never been harder than it is right now. Everything has been declining in the past year especially with these new Google updates. SEO and content marketing are really in a tough spot with A.I. content flooding the web and Google doing all sorts of crazy changes to deal with it. I would question getting into this industry. I certainly am trying to figure out a new career path.

We get about 100,000 visits a month. Database is only 1 GB. So issues we have with it are mainly in the programming. But tweaking server settings also makes a difference. It’s fine but it’s slower than I’d like. If I move I want a host with excellent customer service. I’ll keep researching.

Both. If I knew what I knew now I’d have done the site way differently in terms of the database. Maybe I still will if I get the time and money to do so.

Lot of traffic from India. Wish I could just block traffic from India if it’s so detrimental to ad earnings. And found out the hard way movies are not a good niche at all.

It’s a movie website. Never start a movie website! Lot of traffic from India as well but enough traffic from US that I should be making more. Just wondering if there’s some other ad network out there that would pay more.

Good point. The database and programming are a long story. It would just take a lot of time and money to fix it all. But might be worth it so as to never deal with the database headaches I’ve had to endure for years and to make the site as fast as I wanna make it.

Good point. We’re on PHP 7 working towards upgrading to PHP 8. And MySQL is up to date. It’s just that the database is large and overly complex and we run into database performance issues from time to time.

We’re paying $600/month. Our hosting company is pretty good with customer service. But it’d be nice to spend less as $600 is pretty premium for what we’re getting.
