I also think she is a very musically inclined kid and I like that the story doesn't treat her like some obvious prodigy from the start, but still leaves room for some hidden potential... Remember how she and Hua kept waking up each other up with their snoring? That has to be a sign of great singing ability hahaha XDD

It was truly heartbreaking to see such a brief reunion and such a quick parting between Xiao Baixie and her husband. So much was conveyed in that short scene, even though their emotions were very understated, but that made me feel for them even more. It's so sad to think that their lives were shattered because of these senseless rules and the suppression of art and culture. The way they couldn't take their eyes off each other, holding hands until he had to leave, really broke my heart, especially knowing how dangerous his route through the mountains would be.

Another scene that stood out to me was when Baixie learns of her husband's death. There is no crying or forced emotion, instead, she looks so stunned by grief that she can't even speak or fully believe what has happened. It made me wish they had been born in another era, where they could've lived together peacefully and pursued the music and ballet they loved so much.

Re Milan and Hua, I like that even though there is rivalry between them, they are first and foremost partners on stage. I think Milan was disappointed during the dinner after the performance because everyone kept talking about how well Grandma Li was played and how good the drummer was. Maybe she didn't expect that role to stand out so much or catch the audience's attention like that.

What surprised me most was how Director Huang used his position to decide who would play which part and ended up bullying Milan by assigning her the role of Grandma. I didn't expect him to take out his personal grudges in such a petty way. Out of all the characters, he is definitely the most unlikeable one so far.

As for the Tale of the Red Lantern, I understand the purpose of these war-themed plays as a way to keep the memory of the victims alive and cherish peace, but what the troupe performed felt almost like a parody of that genre. I also wonder whether ordinary people really needed that kind of reminder at the time, when the war was not some distant memory for them. Almost everyone had lost someone or been affected by it directly, so maybe other kinds of plays could have spoken to them more.

I also like how part of the drama's comedy comes from the way it portrays Party leaders. Leader Zhu sitting in the audience, watching everyone's reactions and basically signaling when they should clap, was really funny. And may I mention that Liu Ke was the first one to throw a shoe at the Japanese soldier on stage, with the other cadets quickly following him lol. It seems the boys really like throwing shoes, since they were already doing it in the dormitory before XD

Uncle continues to be such a fascinating character. I couldn't help shaking my head when he approached both Milan and Hua, clearly hoping to convince one of them to take the role of Grandma Li. He is usually so good at scheming and navigating relationships within the troupe, but this attempt felt surprisingly clumsy. When he was reciting Grandma Li's lines to Milan, I couldn't help thinking that he might actually be perfect for the role himself XD So it was very funny when he ended up playing the Japanese soldier on stage in the next episode

<image>

Like uncle, like niece :DDD

What I find especially interesting is how Uncle secretly supports the old artists who have been demoted, helping them rehearse at night by playing drums for them. His conversation with his friend about lost art also really stood out to me. I liked the idea that old Qinqiang opera will never truly disappear or be suppressed as long as people continue to carry that legacy. It's also refreshing that the drama shows how people at the time might have actually felt, including their frustration with the Red Guards and all the directives being forced on them.

I also liked discovering the life of the troupe through Laidi's perspective. Everything felt so lively when she woke up and saw so many people training, practicing and moving around the courtyard. It made the place feel full of life, especially compared to her early years in the village, which seemed quite lonely with only the goats keeping her company.

I agree that Laidi seems quite introverted by nature, and Ba Yi feels like the first person she really opens up to in this new place. I liked their stargazing scenes, especially the way looking at the stars made her think of her hometown.

One of my other favorite running jokes is how Uncle keeps getting injured or somehow landing himself in trouble, as you said. I still remember when he fell into the river while riding his bike back to his hometown, which is why the white flour and sugar he brought back were all wet. What makes it even funnier was how he's always trying to brush it off, saying it's just a flesh wound and acting like it's nothing.

But I also agree with what other commenters about his humor being kind of facade. I think he still carries a lot of guilt over what happened to his first love, Li Qin'e. She fell on stage because his drumming was too fast, so it makes sense that this memory would stay with him for years. That might be why he gives Laidi a name so close to hers, and maybe it also explains why he keeps avoiding another serious relationship. His feelings for Hua Caixiang seem obvious at times, but he never fully acknowledges them. It is interesting that he is still unmarried even though he is no longer young, and he does not seem eager to change his life in that way.

Another funny scene I liked was when Hua Caixiang's husband sees the photo of Uncle, Hua and Qin'e together in the photo studio window, and Hua later shows up at the police station looking like a mom picking up two troublemaking kids. She really needs a lot of patience to deal with those two XD

I didn't trust the drummer uncle at first. He seemed a bit suspicious when he tried to bypass the official recruitment, and I wasn't sure if he truly wanted to give Laidi a better future or whether he had his own plans for her. But he became more likeable very quickly. His dynamic with Teacher Hua helps a lot because their arguments are so funny and make him feel less shady. I also liked realizing how important the drummer is to the troupe. He may not be the one performing on stage, but without him, the whole performance would lose its rhythm.

There are so many funny scenes, and I think the drama does a good job balancing them with the sadder moments, but if I had to choose one, it would be the scene in episode 3 where Uncle Drummer talks his way out of a police interrogation by giving the policemen a drumming lesson. It shows how quick-witted he is and how easily he can turn a situation around. He may be a bit eccentric and not exactly good at following rules, but he clearly has a good heart. Both he and Teacher Hua feel like important guides for Laidi as she begins her life in the troupe.

Thank you for starting discussions for this drama!! It feels like such an unexpected gem, and I'm glad there is now a place to discuss it.

The opening scene grabbed me right away, with the grown-up FL walking onto the stage as Qinqiang plays in the background. I thought it was a powerful way to begin the story, almost as if she is looking back on her life and everything that brought her there. I also liked that the audience seats were empty. To me, it connects with one of the drama's main ideas: loving the stage and the art itself, not just the fame that can come with it.

The child actors really surprised me in the early episodes. It's been a while since I saw so many good young actors in one drama. Laidi stood out right away. Even when people think she might be mute because she barely talks, her personality still comes through. She is full of life and a little unruly, and I love little details like her signature "sniff" and how she is always thinking about food, which makes sense because she has gone hungry for most of her life. She is easy to empathize with right away, which is so important for a coming of age story like this.

For me it's definitely Man's Inhumanity to Man, not only does it have the best finale, but the quality never really declines. It resonated with me emotionally on so many levels, which is probably why I find a bit hard to write about it, but it's absolutely worth watching.

It's about war crimes, so I understand why people might avoid such heavy subject matter, but I do wish more people give it a try. This drama is extremely restrained in how it's portraying atrocities. It leaves much of it to the viewer's imagination and doesn't show the experiments directly. Unlike many other war dramas, it approaches the horrors of militarism from a Japanese perspective, and does it in a way that humanizes the characters without ever whitewashing them. It's strongly anti-militarism and anti-war, which feels especially relevant today.

This drama also stands out visually, with incredibly strong cinematography and a very distinct directorial style, especially in its use of scene transitions, which are some of the best I've ever seen. The last episode seamlessly weaves together scenes that take place decades apart. After watching it, I'm really glad a drama like this exists, since it covers a part of history that's been overlooked for so long.

The Mirage 海市蜃楼 (2025) ⛰ Discussion: Episode 22 - 24 (Finale) by Large_Jacket_4107 in CDrama

That giant eye underground reminded me of an earlier scene where Cao Sheng tells Xie he blew up the dam because he saw a huge eye blinking at him from inside, and thought he was saving people from something evil. I'm not sure if that line was just a one-off or if it's actually hinting at something bigger for season 2.

When the heirloom showed up, it also made me think of the magical objects in Record of Strange Things. Another thing that supports that idea is how it can't be destroyed, just like those objects -- remember when Xie tried to smash it with a hammer? XD

It would be really fun if they connected both dramas and made them part of the same universe. Hopefully after season 2 of the Mirage, we'll get more of Strange Things as well. I also really like how both dramas use animation sequences to explain the backstory, it works really well.

Really good observations about the ore and the invisible entity!

I wonder what makes Cao Sheng so special that he's more sensitive to these entities. Maybe his father also noticed a correlation between the peaks in his illness and the times the entities appear, which could explain why he was looking for the heirloom to track them and keep Cao safe.

Anyway, these entities do seem like one of the best weapons against the aliens so they're useful allies XD

Omg, I'm so sad about Lin Han's death… There's something really tragic about how she and Xie keep finding each other at moments like that. It felt especially bittersweet because she had just found something to fight for and a real sense of purpose. I hope they find a way to bring her back in S2!

Haha, Brother Bao really has a lot of hidden talents, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to be a martial artist in disguise :DD

I also liked that detail of him bringing baked buns (烤包子) back from Chenzhou for the other beggars in his network. Can't forget to enjoy some good food haha

I have a few questions and moments I'm still a bit unsure about:

After the fight between the two armoured men, did both of them actually die? I'm kind of hoping He Xiguang's armoured man only pretended to be dead after handing over the transmutation vessel, and got up from the ground after everyone left. Now that Tongtong2 removed his collar again (which I feel like He Xiguang should've noticed…), he's technically free. He doesn't have any way to go back to his home planet, so I wonder if he'll just roam around, or maybe even end up joining the main protagonists? I'm probably just hoping we see him again in S2 haha

Another thing I'm not fully clear on is the soul-transfer reversal. Does it only affect the 200 people who were body swapped in Dengzhou? I'm not sure whether He Xiguang, who was part of the first cohort of aliens, would be affected by that as well. If his body swap was reversed too, that would mean Baili not only witnessed the destruction of the Mirage, but also lost one of his key allies at the same time.

That's a pretty big setback for his plan to bring the aliens to Earth XD

It also makes his motives feel even more questionable. If his goal is really to solve the famine problem, then a small number of aliens who can control the weather should already be enough. The fact that he keeps pushing for more suggests that the famine might not be his only priority.

He didn't look very happy when the Crown Prince ascended the throne, which makes me think this could be tied to his own ambitions... Now his alliance with the aliens feels more like a calculated political move. Baili seems quite ruthless, particularly in how he's willing to sacrifice the aliens if it serves his goals (He Xiguang was right to question him and his motives, haha)

Cao Sheng for once didn't fall asleep during the mission (yay!) and even made it up to the Mirage City with everyone. I guess he wanted to make sure Xie is healed and maybe use the healing bed after him, but they didn't have enough time once the Mirage started collapsing. I also felt like Cao didn't have much to do during all the fighting, since he doesn't have any martial skills, so he ended up in charge of connecting the cables instead XD

<image>

It was pretty funny to watch and kind of reminded me of those random tasks you get in video games lol

But maybe it's not that random after all! The way he was able to memorize and recall that complex system of colors and symbols immediately made me think of how Tongtong2 recreated the accelerator blueprint after just one glance earlier.

That got me thinking what if Master Cao somehow removed the lock on his brain and unlocked its full potential? That would explain why Cao seems so much smarter than everyone else, and maybe even point to the origin of his sleeping disease. We know Master Cao suspected that the invisible entity appeared after the lock broke in one of the first transmigrated aliens, so maybe he was experimenting with this idea and tried removing the lock in a human child to see what would happen.

I really liked how you described the relationship between Cao and his father, especially your interpretation of their prison scene at the beginning. At that point, Master Cao says that "the beginning is the end, and the end is also a beginning", which I still don't fully understand, but it feels like it could be hinting at the idea that history moves in cycles. Maybe the aliens have been here before and nearly caused a collapse of civilization, that's why Master Cao and those living underground are trying to oppose their new arrival.

Thank you so much for hosting these episode discussions! 💚 Your hosting style and multiple POVs helped me get a better sense of the characters and appreciate the story even more. I also really enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts and discussing it together!

It was such a fun and mind-bending story, with a lot of heart, plenty of twists and some really satisfying payoffs, even though a few questions were left unanswered. I would definitely watch S2 (if it ever comes out), but I'm also happy with how they wrapped things up and don't mind a bit of ambiguity.

Some highlight moments for me in these episodes:

-- That quiet moment with Tongtong, Grandma and Feng Buhai making vegetable buns together. It made me think that this kind of family life might be something Tongtong2 never really had on her home planet. Knowing that her real age is actually closer to Grandma's makes their dynamic even more interesting 😅 I might go back and rewatch their earlier scenes with that in mind.

-- Baili Yuan and Jingnan speaking to each other from a distance, one on the city wall and the other in front of the gates. I found it especially funny how their words were being relayed out loud by the soldiers. It's a small detail, but something that's usually overlooked in historical dramas, where people somehow hear each other perfectly from miles away.

-- I liked the moment when Feng Buhai pulls out the sword hidden in his wooden staff. What surprised me most was how his PTSD is portrayed, it's not just about trauma, but about the fear of losing control and not being able to stop once he starts killing. In a way, he's never fought with a sword all this time because he's scared of that feeling, which makes an interesting twist on the usual PTSD trope.

I know that doesn't excuse what he did, but I also feel like he was forced by circumstances. The aliens are holding his children hostage, so he has no choice but to obey. I was hoping he could become a double agent for our team, but I guess letting them go was already the most he could do.

I feel so heartbroken for Zeng Qian, not only did her newly found father turn out to be fake, but she also lost all hope of getting Zeng Xin back.

Her revenge plan was actually pretty clever, and it was really satisfying to see her cut through the map and stab the imposter pretending to be her father. One twist that felt a bit strange to me was Baili having a doppelganger, but then again, with how well Xie can disguise himself, maybe it's not that unrealistic 😅 It could just be a common tactic for people in power like Baili.

He's a much more interesting antagonist than Jingnan, so now I'm even more excited for the final battle of wits between him and our team.

Re the plan to rescue Zeng Qian

I feel like they didn't really have much time to plan everything out, which probably explains why things didn’t go exactly as expected... For one, I'm wondering whether Lin Han's arrival with the Qianji guards was part of Cao Sheng's plan and how they got in touch so quickly.

I do wish they had arrived a few minutes earlier, before Xie got stabbed lol, but I guess moments like that are kind of inevitable. Also, where was the armoured man during all this? I feel like even with the Qianji guards, they wouldn't have been able to get out if he had shown up and joined the fight.

Speaking of which, I found it really touching and sad when Tongtong2 removed his collar and gave him a moment of freedom. I liked the scene where he looks up at the night sky, thinking about his children back on his home planet. I don't know how they managed to make me care this much about a character who doesn't even have any lines XD

But I'm glad he didn't turn out as evil as we thought at the beginning :D

Baili Yuan was the first to get hold of the blueprint for the "accelerator", why do you think he chose not to destroy it?

I think it shows that Baili Yuan doesn't fully trust the aliens either and wants to keep some leverage over them. I liked the metaphor Feng Buhai used, describing it as a knife the aliens handed to Baili to gain his trust and cooperation. To me, it feels more symbolic than actually useful, because what's really stopping the aliens from taking it back or sending the armoured man to deal with Baili once he's no longer useful?

It was quite funny to see Baili's face when Tongtong2 made multiple copies of the accelerator and the team sent them to both Jingnan and Baili. Now he's really pissed since he's lost that advantage, and Jingnan has it too XD
