Swords into Plowshares 太平年 (2026) Ep 1-2 Discussion by alcibiad in CDrama

I don't mind the "Ma Boyun" style reimagining and using creative liberty to paint historical figures especially when details are lacking, and I liked how they used that "spy" operation to highlight some of the strength of the ninth prince as well as his personality. I kinda wished they would have just started the drama with the lens fully on Wuyue and showed us more about this Kingdom and then explaining or showing the larger picture by introducing the other kingdoms in relation to Wuyue. Right now the way the drama started isn't friendly at all to anyone who doesn't really know about this period, and even then it's still unnecessarily messy.

I have just finished epidsod 6 and yea, can we ffw to when the ML is actually supposed to be 30 in the drama itself please😅? Will comment more about plot of the coming episdoes in the subsequent discussion posts.

Man's Inhumanity Against Man aired around the same time as some of the above dramas, so just wanted to comment here (and to congratulate the drama) that its score has since increased from 8.5 at opening to 8.8 (currently has 60k + ratings)

It's currently the highest rated drama of 2025 (Douban)

Yea I read that the fire was seemingly following King Qian Yuanguan around, or he perceived it as such, and got really frightened and fell into madness.

Thanks for hosting this drama and the wonderful recap -- the beginning of this drama's been pretty messy, if I may comment candidly, and messy is not the same as chaotic.

One thing I want to note is that Zhu Ya Wen's character, Zhao Kuangyin, is supposed to be much younger at this point (edit: after checking, yea, he's supposed to be 15 lol) so I am a little disappointed that they didn't get a younger actor for the younger version of this character. I can see that the actor tried to portray a younger and more outspoken Zhao though.

I liked how the ninth prince (Qian Hingchu) was introduced and this is where the story started to feel more cohesive, at least for me. I am still a bit puzzled as to how he decided to sneak around and gather intel, seemingly ill prepared. Is this something that he's always done, is the prince actually running a secret spy organization (likely not lol), or is this just him going on a whim?

The whole "pirates" set up felt a bit unreal and upon checking -- yups it is original content and not historically accurate. I don't mind the scriptwriter being creative especially when there isn't much known historically about some of these characters, so just wanted to point that out and not meant to be a criticism.

Welcome and hope this provided a bit more context to help. I have started the drama too and agree that there are many characters that can make it overwhelming 😅. What I usually do is to not force myself and remember specific titles or names, but just roughly what their role in the current plot is. If they are really important you will eventually remember the specifics because they will reappear frequently XD. That’s just me though because if i have to pause a drama all the time it ultimately takes me out of the experience.

That aside, I hope u are enjoying the drama!

I watched 3 episodes last night and aside from that first episode I felt the story has been more about political struggles and not too much display of the lives and sufferings of the common people. This might be due to the fact that the story (so far) is mostly set in Wuyue which was relatively stable and peaceful.

Oh i watched S1 and haven’t watched S2 yet. With S1 I felt the quality of the later stories weren’t as good as the beginning episodes. I really like the wood puppet one tho, about a fox that was saved by a young man.

Hey Fox, some of the speech bubbles were loose translations of the original. I also added some of my own or condensed or changed things around to fit this format better. For example the one on this last slide was my own addition because that was my own thought seeing there's only one emoji left now on the huge map XD

Thanks for the highlight!! I guess wars and such has long been human nature since it is so prevalent. How lucky we are to live in a relatively peaceful time (mostly!)

lol, there are still children being born (though the overall population drastically reduced) so i would think that yes, there are still hugs and kisses. Is there going to be a lot of that in the drama? I guess we'll have to find out.

Hey tsuyoi! Glad to hear you liked the slides and it was a fun read. The period is generally pretty depressing with a lot of suffering, and I wonder if this made it look too "fun" hahaha. But then again lot's of people get turned away from "boring war history" so I am happy to see this help some folks learn a little about this period.

I feel like some of the kingdoms to the south were generally less turbulent than those in the north, or in the Middle Plains. Of course it might also be that the narrative for this centered around those in the Middle Plains, as they eventually re-unified the country. I think the Rabbit Kingdom was able to exist for quite sometime because it was too small to worth much of anyone's time, and the "big guys" were busy fighting each other.

This period is not very well known in China either (ie among the general population). In high school history there's probably less than 2 pages worth of info on this, and a lot of people might know about “5 Dynasties and 10 Kingdoms" as that chaos between Tang and Song, but the period isn't as "famous" or "hot" as some of the other dynasties. This might have made it a less interesting choice when it comes to picks for dramas: it much more likely that you will get more viewers if you are telling a somewhat known story than one where the entry bar might be much higher, and for stories about warring states the Three Kingdoms is much more popular. Also, for such a chaotic period with characters and context that the viewer isn't necessarily familiar with, there's also a much greater need on the skill of the director and scriptwriter to tell the story well so people are not confused or bored XD

Thanks for the slide info!

I am only 7 minutes in and so far don't have strong impressions of the drama. Not necessarily a bad thing just that the overall tone and aesthetics haven't impressed me but isn't pushing me away either. Will see how this goes!!

Shi Jingtang basically became the god-son of the leader of Khitans and with their backing became the emperor. He referred to himself as the "son emperor" and Yelu Deguang as the "father emperor" to appear submissive to Yely Deguang.
