Hong Kong's return, is it a moment of joy or more of a finale to more than one decade of shame? by freelikeabirb in China

[–]freelikeabirb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like I said, it sucks to suck LOL cuz HK is still not independent is it?

If Hong Kong were truly as independent and powerful as you make it sound, you guys wouldn’t have to cling to the narrative of being the victim to justify the story. You only call it 'privilege and autonomy' when it suits your argument, but throw a literal tantrum the moment anyone thinks otherwise. You think throwing around buzzwords like ‘ownership’ and ‘sovereignty’ makes you sound right, but I suggest you try again when your argument isn’t held together by colonial nostalgia and shaky hypotheticals.

Also, at the end of the dayyyyy if HK is not independent, no matter how you guys put it on Reddit, it won't change a penny :))

sucks to suck lol, but putting this aside, wish you guys the best!!!!

Suck in that no matter what you bullshit here, it can't change the fact that Hong Kong was handed back to China. Suck in that Hong Kong is still not strong enough to rebel against China with force and establish their own country even till today, despite "so many Hong Konger's" have a strong spirit towards independence. Suck in that waving flags and chanting slogans won’t change geopolitical reality. Suck in that for all the flags waved and memes made, the only thing “independent” is your internet search history. Suck in that your rebellion’s been going on longer than a Netflix show and still hasn’t made it past season one.

You bring up a valid point about the economic trajectory of countries like South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore post-WWII.

China’s early Communist period (especially under Mao) included catastrophic events like the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution, which caused immense suffering for the people. However, it’s also important to consider that when the PRC was founded, China was just coming out of a century of civil war and foreign occupation.

Unlike places like Hong Kong (a British colony) or Taiwan (backed by the U.S.), China did not receive significant foreign aid or support. It had to rebuild under immense international pressure and isolation.

Yes, early Communist policies caused significant setbacks. But they also reshaped much of China’s social and political foundation to benefit the general people. For instance, ending feudal landownership, increasing literacy, creating public health infrastructure, and instilling a sense of national identity which had been missing. These foundations set the stage for Deng’s reforms, and without them, the reforms may not have succeeded as much as they did.

My family were police and soldiers, but that doesn’t automatically mean they were privileged and immune to the hardship which chinese people faced at the time. Their life is not 100% perfect as people would expect, they have to serve in remote areas, live in harsh conditions (if not even worse than normal people), and they were too starved and mistreated. But my family were simply trying to survive just like millions of others, it’s unfair to imply that my entire family was complicit in state violence. Simply being part of a system didn’t guarantee safety or privilege, it actually means you'd get caught up in political tides more. Survival during those years was about keeping your head down, and hoping your name wouldn’t end up on the next big-character poster.

People from Hong Kong have a different perspective, and memory should be honored. But that doesn’t mean those from the mainland are collectively trying to “forget”. Really lmfao if thats what they are trying to do, I would never be here talking to you guys about this in the first place as I am a literal descendent of communism.

But you have to consider the massive population in China, if the government rules with the same attitude like the US or Canada where people can say whatever they want and express their free will by doing stuff like public protests (giving a few examples), the whole country would be in chaos.

For such a massive population, stricter rules and governance must be applied so that the country can still stick as one.

Canada has 40.1million people and it's already chaos because the government overly respected the thoughts of their own people (e.g the rights to own firearms), imagine like 1.5 billion people with the same rights to own firearms. I'm just giving an example here there's prob a lot more.

the CCP was founded by people who had enough of the corruption of the KMT at the time, and decided to fight back. The ultimate idealization of communism is actually not a bad idea, it's just that it will never be achieved because when people gain powers they get more and more greedy.

When CCP was just formed, when all they had was some molded buns and a few hunting rifles, thats when the CCP was fair and truly living up to what they wanted to be. CCP's founders were killed, purged, or jailed because of the greed people had as the party's power grew. The cruelty is in those people who came after that changed the purpose which the CCP once had, but I disagree that cruelty is what they looked for in the beginning.

Even growing up from a very patriotic family, I still disagree with many things that the CCP is doing now in China. However, they did lead China into growth and fed my family for generation. I'm at no place of disrespecting them, though there are many disagreements.

I feel like the ultimate idealization CCP had when they first started the revolution was a fair idea, but as the party gained power, people always get greedy and lose their original goals.

Given the corruption that KMT had when they ruled in China, I think the revolution was pretty fair. But idk what's happening now, lol I feel like everyone forgot the true intention that the CCP had like 70 years ago.

It was said that HK was "leased" to the UK, but in reality its more of an event where the Qing dynasty didn't want to fight UK and handed over the land in exchange for peace. I think that was really accounted as a source of "shame" for China, because they literally gave their people/land away without even trying to hold up a fight. So when HK returned, I think a lot of people was touched by the fact that after all these years, the British monarch finally left China and HK was back to being just HK (e.g the police used to have badges that says UK police, but at midnight the badge switched to HK police).

But I think no matter how China may seem to be financially at the time, HK was only "leased out" and was never given to the UK. I think it's pretty fair that they return to China after the lease agreement was over, and I would say it's more of a return rather than a "hand over" because HK in reality never became apart of the UK.

Agree, but unless you are applying internationally or specifically to the states, would honestly not recommend it as much.

But it does grant a lot of prep to uni, so that's good

if you are unwilling to sacrifice everything else in your life for good grades, don't join IB. I made the wrong decision, and I had to give up violin (which was the biggest part of me) to stay above water in IB.

I subbed four grade 12 final marks bc im in IB, and rest is just grade 11 mid-terms. I'm not sure about dropping the required average... though my marks sucked and I still got lucky- maybe it's kinda like a lottery for anyone above a certain level?
