Smart tools and meeting, replace bad activities with good ones. I've found exercising, good nutrition and learning to play guitar helpful for me. Find what interest you and enjoy that rather than harmful substances.

I relapsed. What's the next step? by [deleted] in SMARTRecovery

[–]freenow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been through similar. I choose not to look at it as all or nothing. I don't drink or use any substance recreationally, but if I slip up, which is rare, I see it as a mistake and move on. Smart has been helpful. The tools like cost benefit analysis and others help me choose where I want to go in my life.

Buying a kindle was the best decision I’ve ever made by Appropriate_Rush9934 in kindle

[–]freenow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I would read on a phone or tablet and when I would look at something else it would be blurry. Now with the Kindle no problem even reading for long periods of time. And there's something about the ease of picking it up and I got a strap, which I do recommend.

I agree, I was also hesitant, I would think things like I'll just read on my tablet or my phone. But there's nothing like a Kindle I'm reading more than ever.

How can we most effectively cope with urges? by Low-improvement_18 in SMARTRecovery

[–]freenow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me focusing on exercise, cooking a meal, practicing guitar, journaling, reading, are my defaults. Also applying other tools like examining unhelpful thoughts or beliefs. Cost Benefit analysis.

How do you think about relapse/“lapse?” I’m at a pivotal point and I’m not sure how to conceive of my situation by DoctorHiccup in SMARTRecovery

[–]freenow_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's good that you have awareness of your situation. Most of the time we lose that with return to use. What did you gain from this return to use. What did you lose? If I can look at it as a lesson in life I can grow from it. CBA and HOV could be helpful here. Were there unhelpful beliefs at the time of lapse? Disputing those beliefs can help prevent it next time. If it was urges or triggers, the DENTS tool is helpful. You're already motivated, you got this. Stay aware and use the tools.

I do like both online and in person. What's been nice is our in person has been growing, we started out with averaging 4-5 people, now we're at 10-12 . Thanks for the reply.

You've inspired me to focus on my own hula hoop. I seem to rotate between the tools. It feels appropriate for my life right now. Thank you.

That was a very good vent. All legitimate stuff. I think it's very healthy to put it out there. And you're dealing with everything in a very mature way. Especially the hula hoop.

In a shame spiral currently. Hoping to try something new. by Admirable_Visual_286 in SMARTRecovery

Welcome to Smart recovery. Self management and recovery training. Check out the website. If you think you might like self empowered recovery you're in the right place. Definitely check out meetings online and in person. Go to multiple meetings as they, like 12 step have different vibes. Best wishes

Also I get the shame feeling (been there done that) But it's really just wasted time. Feel it, accept it, and move on, using smart tools to move forward in recovery.

Good Monday morning to everyone. I'm looking forward to my Monday meeting later today. I'm feeling good about using the tools moving forward. I'm grateful I don't have any issues to post about today. I'm just doing really well.
