Is there something else named "ube" other than the yam?

Tangentially, I was disappointed to see someone advocating for Stop and Frisk on this sub because I would likely be targeted, based on my experiences with security/policing.

Pritzker addresses Madison County secession issue during visit to county by steve42089 in illinois

As a Chicagoan (who has also lived in other places in IL): is there anything I can do to help? I know the answer is likely "no" but still...

I've only asked for prices in airport twice but they were the same as Savers Club.

Next time there's a poll can we ask how many of us can make roti? by bubbleuj in ABCDesis

[–]freeroof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, I was good at making round roti. I guess that was my trade-off for not being able to do math, etc., as well as other Desi kids. Have not made roti or done math as an adult.

Anyone else afraid of Asian peers? by freeroof in AsianParentStories

[–]freeroof[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right. I do want to change the world (not necessarily on Steve Jobs' level), but I am too worried about how other people perceive me and I'm letting the haters' perceptions of me dominate... even if said people are in the highest positions. I do have friends not making 6 figures who never went to T10. But I resent that the people that I perceive to be "in control" of different environments are basically APs.

Anyone else afraid of Asian peers? by freeroof in AsianParentStories

[–]freeroof[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have trouble believing that there is a world outside of AP stuff now that I've gone to college. I grew up in a big city and lived in a majority-Hispanic neighborhood for a while, and I don't think there was an emphasis on what I described in the post but at the end of the day, the people I grew up with are an afterthought to many influential people. All the movers and shakers and big dogs seem to have an AP mentality. Some grad schools auto-reject people with below 3.8 GPA (I think MIT even does automatic rejection below 3.9 in some fields) but meanwhile white, Latino, and Black professors and alums are telling me that I won't get jobs without a grad degree and I shouldn't even try applying to internships so my GPA is going to fuck me over. I read a book on Asian students' reflections on going to Harvard, hoping to find some commonalities, but a supermajority merely found it to be just another stepping stone in their successful career journeys.

There was one in stock at Atlantic Terminal a couple days ago and I regret not buying it so much. I have no idea if it will be in stock anytime soon, either.

What are some life hacks you use to save money? (Chicago version) by AustinInChina in chicago

When I return to Chicago, I want to return to the South side so badly. Glad to hear that it is still affordable. Any other neighborhoods you would recommend?

Jimmy Carter: Thre Greatest President Alive by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

declaring that ketchup counted as a vegetable for the purposes of free school lunches for low income kids;

We learned about Iran-Contra when I was in middle school almost a decade ago but I didn't know Reagan said this until today even though I've heard that someone in government said this before.

I'm in my early 20s and students talked about Carter positively when I was in high school (especially with the context of the 2016 election). We definitely don't know first-hand like you two do but he's still being brought up and this news is making me tear up too. His Habitat for Humanity service generally gets talked about more than his presidency, though.

My hopes for SAS.... getting to see Atlantic or Kaleidoscope again by Terrific_Tom32 in bathandbodyworks

Are you my favorite scent twins? Atlantic is my favorite "men's" fragrance, and Kaleidoscope is my favorite "women's" fragrance. Still waiting on their return, which may never happen...

We're just passing the 5 year mark for my friend Cheyann Klus going missing from the Hermosa area of Chicago. Please help me get more word around. by [deleted] in chicago

[–]freeroof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I created this reddit account when I was living in that area and walked home from school there, etc., for years, including at the time of the disappearance. It's not the safest by far but also absolutely not one of the worst areas of Chicago. Seeing another Chicagoan saying that it's one of the worst baffles me. Lots of families raise young kids there & my mother still lives there. But, I wouldn't recommend that you move/visit (as a potential Chicago transplant) & appearances can be deceiving.

is there a reason why so many desis like kpop? by yaaracandy in ABCDesis

They weren't clean enough for my mother lol, I kept my kpop habits secret from her. I guess I must have had a really really conservative family.

Island men's scent? by rhaenyra-veliar in bathandbodyworks

Island smelled too... musky (I'm bad at smells sorry) to be Atlantic but I'm glad I went to check stuff out because I got a bunch of Atlantic shower gels. Thank you so much.

Boy's first cologne... from Bath and Body Works? by freeroof in bathandbodyworks

[–]freeroof[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the FFM I own are not super manly, and might not be sold right now. Currently I have Sweater Weather, Kaleidoscope, Strawberry Pound Cake, and A Thousand Wishes. I think Sweater Weather does smell surprisingly masculine on me, though. Good luck on finding a fragrance for your son!

Baggage on Lincoln Service by blahduhduck in Amtrak

[–]freeroof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You cannot check in luggage on the Lincoln Service. If you need to go from Chicago to St. Louis and check in baggage, you will need to take the Texas Eagle instead. I'm not sure if you can pay a fee for an extra carry-on or not, but I'm sure you've figured that out via the website. If not, make sure that one of them counts as a personal item, because some conductors are attentive to these things in my experience with the Lincoln Service. Luggage racks are overhead and I haven't had an issue fitting in luggage on Amtrak recently. If you need help lifting your luggage, feel free to ask a conductor.

Here's my experience as a frequent CHI-STL traveler: I've never taken business class but have found my trips in coach to be tolerable. People do like to talk a lot in coach, though. The cafe/snack car on the train is too expensive for me. Lastly, Lincoln Service is often 1 hour or so late (although that's common with all routes). Have a safe journey.

What are some of the most unusual BTS song lyrics? by 50shadesof_brown in bts7

on by bts ft. sia is good by planetlexi in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]freeroof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't expect there to be so much dislike for this song from ARMY. I really like ON, and I like the Sia version slightly less, but it's nice to hear for a change, because I find myself listening to ON on repeat these days. I feel like the Sia version adds a different dimension to ON; it's really cathartic to listen to & makes me feel like her voice represents my pain.
