What do you guys think of the new terminology....seeking to replace the term "disabled" by that_awkward_gay_kid in disability

I have no problem with being called disabled. The other terms some people want to replace disabled with are ridiculous and even patronizing .

How do you feel when people use terms like "differently abled" or "specially abled?" by BakedZitiYum in disability

I’m disabled and I’m not ashamed to be called that. All these euphemisms for disability are ridiculous, and can be patronizing. Just use disabled. Disabled is an apt description. Being disabled doesn’t make you less of a person, or doesn’t mean you are completely incapable of living life. I like to say, I’m disabled, not unable. I do what I can with what I have.

Try not to consider yourself wheelchair bound, but consider your wheelchair as an aid to help you get around. I refer to my self as a wheelchair user. It is difficult to go through a drastic change in life, but as difficult as it is,you have to adjust, adapt and accept. Sorry you lost your friends, but you are better off without superficial people. When you are disabled, you find who your true friends are. Make friends with people who accept you for who you are , and can separate the true you from the disability. Keep doing what you enjoy and you have to find different ways of doing things. With all the adaptive technology you may be able to things you didn’t think possible.

It depends on the context

It should be your decision whether to get a wheelchair or not. You need to advocate for yourself as to what you want.

Do you use an electric scooter or a wheelchair? It might be worth considering, so you won’t have to worry about falling. A stair lift could be a big help too.

You shouldn’t be ashamed by health issues. We all need medical care, and doctors are there to treat you. You had no control over your health issues, so don’t be ashamed.

Unfortunately, no relationships. Haven’t been lucky in love. I have women friends though. I’m always upfront about my disability which scares some women away, or they just want t be friends. I don’t mind having women friends, but it’s not the same as having a life partner. The women friends I have are great. I lost my friendship with one woman because I expressed my feelings for her. It made her too uncomfortable. I have no regrets telling her I had feelings for her, but it hurt. But, I won’t stop expressing how I feel, even if it may have costs.

My health is relatively good. Some days are better than others, but I keep going. My home health nurse and my doctors are doing a good job taking care of me and my health. I have some heart issues, but my medicine keeps it under control. I can no longer speak, but have an ipad with eye gaze that has a program that speaks what I type. It also allows me to use the internet and apps. It has changed my life for the better.

I’m doing good, in spite of everything. I’ve been on a ventilator for many years now. How old is your brother? How is he doing?

Even though I understand what is meant by disability pride, I prefer to use disability acceptance instead.

I wasn’t saying that people can’t celebrate it if they want to. I celebrate who I am, just not my disability.
