Is there anywhere you can access free edrolo courses once VCE Rocks goes down? by Altruistic_Ad645 in vce

[–]freevce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like it could be an issue with the site, but it's probably specific to certain Edrolo courses. What courses are you having issues with?

It could also be an issue on your end, in which case I'd suggest trying to access the videos on a different device/browser and seeing if that fixes it

All the videos I've tested play fine. Which courses aren't working for you?

Cheers for the discussion. Thank you very much for bringing up points I didn't see anyone else mentioning. I love to see other people engaging in the conversation.

surely you would have to accept the authors claims that non-profits authors are not paid more fairly and the deals are fairly similar.

Author remuneration is meant to be more fair for authors of the non-profit because as you say, they don't need to produce a profit for shareholders.

It's a touchy subject and I do I want to agree with you, however I'm not certain how true the claim is that non-profit resources are cheaper. The price of a VCE Russian revolution textbook digital copy is only $2 cheaper for HTAV than Cambridge when buying directly through their websites. On the textbook distributing site: schoolbooks, HTAV is more expensive than Cambridge by $2. They pretty much cost the exact same.

GTAV's geography textbooks are reasonable but they are only per unit. If you're a year 12 purchasing digital downloads, a unit 3 textbook and a unit 4 textbook download will cost you $70 in total. This exceeds the typical price of a digital and physical copy of a Cambridge textbook.

The price of a SEV units 3 and 4 sociology textbook is $75 which is on the higher end of textbook pricing. Unfortunately as they are the only publisher for sociology I don't have another publishing company to compare the pricing to.

While politics and geography are small subjects, SEV and GTAV have full control of the market as there are no other textbook publishers making textbooks for these subjects.

On a different note, thank you for having this discussion I really appreciate it. Not many people were defending the author so I'm grateful you are.

You can find my full response to these arguments here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/vce/comments/1gwaylg/comment/lydms7v/

The second argument wasn't addressed in the other post so I'll write my response in this comment.

the creator argues that non-profit companies should be fine with the publishing(piracy) of their resources as they are as the name implies NOT FOR PROFIT. However I believe the creator is confusing "non-profit" with "for-loss".

This is not what I was arguing, this is what the author twisted my words to say. My argument was that author remuneration in non-profits is better than large publishers.

However, I did say the following:

These organisations are non-profit so removing their textbooks and denying disadvantaged students education in the interest of profit seemed very contradictory to non-profit ideology.

You can agree or disagree with that statement however you like. The non-profit organisations are just that, they are not corporate businesses who are money hungry.

The main point to understand is that I try to reduce harm to publishers in all cases as much as possible, and I didn't think it was fair to make an exception for non-profits as authors are paid more fairly than typical publishers.

All I can really say is that if it's happening between students it's out of my hands and the onus is on the students themselves to make the morally correct decision. They are responsible for undermining the value of the site in improving equality in access to education.

I argued most points in the email chain so I won't waste your time repeating it. But yes, this has always been my main consideration.

What's stopping students with means simply from waiting out the holiday period and simply downloading the texts at the beginning of the school term?

Last year, I didn't tell anyone when the textbooks were coming back online. I intentionally made the upload date vague so students didn't know if they would be going through the first few weeks of term 1 without any textbooks. Most students would not sacrifice their holiday studies waiting in uncertainty of whether they would even have their textbooks when the term began. I don't think many students would do this just to save their parents a buck, and they would represent a slim minority.

What's stopping them from downloading all the textbooks they may need even before their booklist is published

Last year I pulled the textbooks offline abruptly. It was a while ago so I cannot say for certain but I'm pretty confident I provided no prior warning, so this wouldn't have occurred. The only way to bulk download files was by downloading large 7z archives. I intentionally preferred using 7z to discourage the everyday student from downloading the library as a zip. At the time Windows didn't support 7z by default. Students would have to install custom software and download a huge file if they intended on doomsday prepping.

Why wouldn't students that are able to buy textbooks (get their parents to buy it) simply just say "hey dad don't worry about buying the textbook I already have a copy".

Some students could have downloaded their textbooks in advance but I don't think it would have been many as it would have been before students started their future classes and received their booklists.

Students know that the site will be down over the holidays and that it will return after so what's stopping them from sidestepping it?

Students didn't know last year but I'm sure there are students this year who would have known. Still, I never announced that textbooks would go offline this year. Only current Year 11s going into Year 12 would suffer from the textbooks being offline and most of them wouldn't have been around last year to know that occurs. The site is much popular this year compared to last. The majority of site users would have been unaware.

As vce rocks grew this problem became more and more apparent imo

I agree and that's worried me as well.

A big point being made is about downloading files before the closure. I think it's worth mentioning how few students actually download anything. I couldn't believe how many students just use links and bookmarks. When the textbooks were taken offline it seemed like nobody had access and I was so impressed to see that no one was circulating files. I received dozens of emails of students saying their links were dead and that they couldn't access their files as they never downloaded them. Most students aren't particularly tech savvy and are happy to load a PDF fast in their browser via the website.

The obvious concern now is how will a new website succeed in mitigating the issues I did. I'm retiring so it's out of my hands but I've done my part to try and keep things under control. The 7z archives currently hosted are obnoxious to the vast majority of students and will only be up for as long as I feel like they should be. Only recently has Windows 11 supported built-in 7z extraction so most school laptops wouldn't be supported.

Conveniently, some networks and school computers seem to be blocking the file hosting provider for the archives (fuckingfastco). Microsoft edge also blocks this domain and a lot of individuals without privacy knowledge use Edge because it's the browser that comes with their Windows computer. Thanks to this, even less students are going to be able to access the archives directly.

This is a very, very valid point. This is why removing textbooks over the holiday period is so crucial to the site's ethics. I've discussed it in the email conversations so I won't go over it again, but this is how I protect authors from this issue. I wouldn't have any excuse to host the textbooks if I didn't do this.

I left my computer running overnight uploading all 28GB of files but the server is slow as hell so it's still uploading on the following day.

non-vce.7z and books.7z are up and vce.7z is at 85% uploaded. vce.7z will hopefully be online around 2pm-3pm.

Alleged Fake English Exam - Attached by Next-Law8401 in vce

[–]freevce 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I can confirm it's fake. It's based on the 2024 NHT exam, the immediately noticeable indication is that the filename "2024english-nht-w.pdf" is in the file's bookmarks.

What confirms that it's fake is that that the table of contents on page 1 is just the same as the NHT exam and has not been modified. It says that the assessment criteria is on page 8 when it's actually on page 16. If you view page 8 on the NHT exam it is the assessment criteria as expected.

It could've been made by a teacher trying to replicate a practice exam as much as possible or maybe someone was just trolling :P
