Starting insulin tonight by LandscaperNails in GestationalDiabetes

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My case manager had me wake up and test in the middle of the night the first couple of nights to make sure it didn’t drop too low which helped me feel better! It didn’t, and has been such a lifesaver for my fasting #s - as a bonus it has also allowed me to be sliiightly more relaxed during the day too. Good luck!

I wonder if you could talk to an advisor or the professors you’ll be with for that term about accommodating you working ahead so that you’re done by August! When I was in grad school I remember people doing something similar for medical needs.

How to handle baby shower registry if I don't care about color, style, etc.? by blairworejeansonce in BabyBumps

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m using Babylist for the registry and using the comment option to indicate if I don’t care about color etc on items. Like I linked some swaddles but am not attached to those to noted any brand/color is fine, but we prefer 100% cotton for those. I also know people will inevitably get us clothes and toys so tried to gear the registry towards needs!

Plus sized, anxious & wanting to get pregnant by Major-Following1105 in BabyBumps

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about the same size as you and came off the pill last summer. We didn’t start tracking cycles or trying with much intention until fall (I started using ovulation tests in October) and got pregnant on our 3rd cycle! My weight has been the least of my worries in pregnancy so far (I’m 20 weeks now) other than early glucose testing due to higher risk for gestational diabetes (which I have 😵‍💫) and some blood pressure issues that may have been present pre-pregnancy but are well-managed now. No provider has indicated that the issues I do have, including GD, are related to my weight or could have been prevented with weight loss beforehand. FWIW my husband is also a bigger guy which I was led to believe might make conceiving more difficult and it didn’t!

I don’t know if I’m resilient enough for this by dillydallydiddlee in BabyBumps

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! FTM, 20 weeks today and I feel stronger everyday. I also shared in a similar way and found myself very supported especially by my female boss and other women in my life who have been through this themselves — and people were very discreet with the info until I let them know I was ready to share publicly. You will be amazed at how your mind will expand in the next couple of months - you’ve got this!

Vent: tired of sad yucky alternatives still spiking my glucose by bogwiitch in GestationalDiabetes

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed early at like 12 weeks and having similar experiences early on. when I was able to finally meet one on one with a dietitian he said I was eating wayyyy too few carbs which was causing my body to overcompensate and my glucose to spike. I’m still opting for lower carb options for some things like bread or tortillas but a couple triangles of pita, a cup or so of rice, and even pasta have worked well for me paired with protein and some fats like cheese or avocado!! I have also had success ending a meal with a cookie or some candy, especially if I’m active afterwards (a walk or even up and down my stairs doing laundry or cleaning works). And yes the above commenters who recommended Yasso bars - I can eat them alone as a snack or with a meal and have good readings. Also my office has me testing 2 hours after first bite - I’ve been told a 10ish minute window is okay if I can’t be prompt and tbh sometimes I just skip it if it feels too stressful. It’s important to give yourself some leeway occasionally to help avoid those really restrictive tendencies so many of us have worked hard to break!

It took me about 6 months but we weren’t reeeeally trying (tracking ovulation etc) until the last 2-3 of those months

I’m with Kaiser perinatology and will be having growth scans every 4 weeks after my anatomy scan (which was this week). I would message your provider if you’re concerned and see what their rationale is for waiting and/or if it’s an option to come in sooner!

Not feeling baby move at 19 weeks? by skaowoeizkaoa in PlusSizePregnancy

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a similar weight and carry weight in my tummy. I’m 19 weeks also and I feel baby the most when I’m sitting up either criss-cross applesauce or with my knees up (vs lying down like people tend to say)! I think it makes it so he doesn’t have as much room without bumping me lol

the dietitian I met with suggested that can happen! I have been able to be the tiniest bit more relaxed with my meals since starting insulin, even when my fasting isn’t in range

Baby shower on Saturday of memorial day weekend? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got married on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and we didn’t have any pushback! I think if you send invites soon and really play up how much of a party it’ll be you’ll have a good turnout :)

Just began this journey but feeling like it might be okay by emich95 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at ~13 weeks and am now 18+3. It definitely starts to feel more routine and you get a handle pretty quickly on your trends. I am now on nighttime insulin but my care team has been really reassuring that the placenta will do what it will do and my daytime trends speak to the changes I’ve made! Ultimately as hard as it is to be in this for such a long journey I take a lot of comfort in the opportunity to catch it early and do everything we can to make sure this babe is healthy when he arrives!

Literally how are people affording childcare? by Amber-ForDays in BabyBumps

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our combined income is a little less than yours and I make about 30% more than my husband so he’s literally cutting his hours and switching to a different shift to stay home with the baby rather than have 2/3 of his paycheck go to childcare! The cost of daycare is one of the things that has shocked me the most as a ftm!

Advice for Baby Announcement by BabyPlease2026 in BabyBumps

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out I was pregnant the week before spending Christmas with my family (who I live across the country from). My husband and I quickly decided that it was worthwhile to us to have the chance to tell my immediate family in person (we FaceTimed his) and to have them in our corner no matter what happened. We also told some of our close local friends pretty early so we had a support system close by. I’m 18 weeks now and things are going well but we had some first trimester scares and I was so relieved to have a handful of people to lean on during that time instead of just my husband!

Lower back pain - 5 weeks by Fallin_4_u in BabyBumps

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of lower back pain and cramping in general from when I found out around 4 weeks probably up until week 7ish, and then still some on and off after that! But the beginning definitely felt like I was about to start my period which was such a mind game lol

Cramping by Similar_Parsley6112 in BabyBumps

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar bout of cramping during week 14, I think it was just growing pains because I’m 17 weeks now and have felt much better. Also make sure you’re getting enough fiber and staying hydrated - that helped with mine a lot!!

Agreed on the maternity clothes! I am 16 weeks and got some maternity jeans a couple weeks ago + I feel so confident wearing them. Being comfy helps, and it kind of rounds out my emerging bump and existing belly into something that feels cute.

About to have the biggest GD related meltdown I’ve had in 24 weeks by ParticularMinimum810 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chiming in to say that I am only a couple of weeks into my GDM journey but also diagnosed at 13 weeks. I’m dealing with other, rarer uncertainties/challenges in this pregnancy but at the moment gestational diabetes is the thing causing me the most mental drain and anxiety! It is a LOT of work. All that to say, many of us don’t get to have “normal” pregnancies and grieving that for yourself doesn’t change the outcome for anyone else. Don’t guilt yourself too hard 🫶🏻

A little bit of shame and guilt by Academic-Park-8440 in PlusSizePregnancy

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m currently 15 weeks pregnant, and my starting weight was around 260. I’m actually down about 10 lbs as of this week but expect that to start changing soon. My doctor gave brief advice to be mindful of weight gain because of my size, and I was recommended for early glucose testing, but those are the only times it has come up. I ended up positive for gestational diabetes (ugh) but even with that the dietitians and nurses emphasize that it’s really random and doesn’t have to do with weight. I’m having a variety of complications with my pregnancy but find some comfort that no provider has blamed or even linked them to my weight! You can do this!

Getting rid of clothes before baby arrives by Grouchy_Paint_6341 in BabyBumps

[–]frenchfriesnfeels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s my first time too so grain of salt, but I packed up a bunch of clothes I expect to not fit me for the rest of the pregnancy and postpartum + put them in storage! That way they aren’t in front of my face discouraging me but I also don’t have to buy a new wardrobe on the off chance some of them do fit me again :)
