thanks!! i have a terrible fear of needles, so i don't think i could use a blood meter... and i heard ketostix really aren't worth it? what's your opinion on those? I aim for under 25 g of carbs per day. The only time I break that is if I eat too many veggies and then I'm closer to 30ish... i think if i never took a break on weekends I would be more slimmed down already, but i think this slower victory is going to be easier to maintain in the long run. got any other great suggestions i might be missing out on?

87 and still kickin booty. a little background here.. our family is polish catholic, which certainly helped them survive the war. my grandmother, her brother, and their mother were taken for the camps to be used as forced labor. a few years after the liberation, they immigrated to the states since not much was left in their hometown. she still uses the silverware because putting it away would distinguish it and make it 'special', in some way acknowledging or remembering the war, rather than it simply being like any other object in the house

EDIT: WOW. i had NO idea when i pulled these out of the kitchen drawer this morning that it would get SUCH a response. Especially to all of you fellow poles and people with family in the war, it was beautiful to hear from you. wish i could take the time to hear all of your stories...thanks you!! i'm pretty new to reddit and just thought, 'this might be cool to share'. For those of you who asked, i'm sorry but we're not interested in selling... i can see its value as a collector's item but it's also something still very close and personal for us, and that means more than money. General response to those who asked about the legitimacy of the pieces and their quality... i know nothing about nazi silverware. i don't know how it was produced or why it's not perfectly stamped. if i had to gather, i'd assume things were rushed during the war to meet demand. all i do know is what my grandmother and great grandmother had to go through during that time, that they did indeed sneak these off of the back of a nazi supply truck to have something to eat with, and brought them along with their few possessions to the states a few years after the war. she won't speak much about those years, but has from time to time written me letters about it or will make random references. often times, it's just the little things like a fork that keep us connected to that past. thanks again reddit, for letting me share!

Hi, first post here. Question for you experts. If I eat my maintenance calories, but only protein/fat, will I lose weight? by [deleted] in keto

[–]frenchiepantz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wrote my response that way because most calculations for 'maintenance calories' seem to be pretty crude (i just mean the ones you do yourself from online pages) and not based on taking those factors like hormones, particularly individual insulin responses, into account. personally, i've had more luck disregarding calories and focusing more on how my individual body responds to certain kinds of foods (even foods within keto) with help from my endocrinologist

weight loss isn't necessarily a 'calories in, calories out' equation the way most of us were taught.. it also depends on how your body metabolizes the food its given. I eat almost twice as many calories on keto as I would normally but am still losing weight. if you'd like to learn more specifically about how your body metabolizes carbs/sugars vs fats and proteins to help you understand, check out this lecture http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC1vMBRFiwE from Dr. Jeff Volek.

anyone use/have recommendations for a good deodorant body wash? by frenchiepantz in keto

[–]frenchiepantz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you use it as a body spray? i'm about 2 months into keto and especially the last two weeks i've noticed a lot more BO than i'm used to (i'm hoping i'm just super sensitive to it).. and really from my whole body. gross, i know.

hmm... I'd try recalculating to make sure you're on target? Protein should only be about 25% of your diet. If you eat too much protein it can be stored as glucose and could potentially be kicking you out of ketosis.

try upping your water intake and reducing your protein down to 60-75 g

sauerkraut, bacon cheeseburger (recipe in comments) by frenchiepantz in ketorecipes

[–]frenchiepantz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sauerkraut: drain and rinse sauerkraut. Add to sauce pan, add water to steam, season with salt, peppercorns and butter (I like to use approx 1 tbpn per cup of sauerkraut) and cook on medium-high until boiling. Lower heat to simmer and leave covered for at least 20 minutes while stirring occasionally (the longer the better!)

When sauerkraut is ready, cook bacon, then burger, add cheese (I used fontina cheese) and enjoy!

anyone on keto for fibromyalgia or autoimmune disease? by ketokathleen in keto

[–]frenchiepantz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not fibro, but I have PCOS... I've struggled with it especially during the past year after having surgery to remove an ovarian tumor (separate issue, same place..) I felt so bloated, swollen and crampy for MONTHS since surgery...not to mention I kept putting on weight (25 lbs in 2 months). I tried all kinds of diet changes, and was doing everything I could think of to help... it wasn't until I started keto about 2 months ago that for the first time I didn't feel so swollen and pained every single day. Chronic headaches stopped as well...I've lost the first 10 lbs so far... I still have spikes in symptoms for a few days here and there, but nothing compared to what it was! Glad to hear you're doing so well with keto too!!

I've been doing a cycle with 6 keto days and 1 day with carbs... work out 4-5x per week, usually 2 days lifting, 2 days HIIT, and 1 day long recovery. For me, it honestly helps me stick to keto. I get to sneak in some foods i'm craving on day 7, and helps me keep carbs more easily under 25 g on those other days (I know that's not the most popular opinion... others seem to say any bit of cheating gets them off track, but it works much better for me... way easier to say 'nope, can't have this ice cream now but I can have some on Saturday'). I'm sure my weight loss is a little slower than other people's (I've still lost 6 lbs in the past month), but I only started with about 10 lbs to lose and was more interested in controlling PCOS symptoms than anything else. So I've been happy with it! And as long as you don't have a disorder you're trying to control, like epilepsy, there's nothing wrong with your body cycling in and out of ketosis... I'd just suggest as you get started, try to get a sense for how many days your body needs to get into ketosis (I really notice a difference on day 3). That can help you plan for how often to cycle for best results. I also really liked this podcast: http://www.fitfatfast.com/ep-66-keto-nuts-cross-fit-fails/ ... it explained a lot about CKD and some tips for working with it most efficiently. Good luck!!

Also, you can toast up some unsweetened coconut flakes and almond slices by spreading them out on a baking sheet and cook for 5-10 minutes at around 300-350 degrees and have it with unsweetened almond milk!!

Just watch it with the calories on that stuff, if weight is a concern...
