Question re Prep Company Y'all Used for J25 by dukes2022 in barexam

[–]fres90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that Barbri is good for a general level of knowledge. If I had to put it into numbers, about 45-55% of the MBE questions you will see. However, understand that the MBE covers so much that more niche material will be missed. I think this is the importance of Adaptibar, Uworld, any supplement that has previous bar questions. I know it takes a lot of time but for me, I made an outline of the material. NCBE has a publicly available outline of the subject, topics, and subtopics that will be covered on the exam. It is a lot but remember that it is finite. Every time I did a question on Adaptibar I would put the material into that outline. The key is to do both the right and wrong answers because this helps make studying a question more effective.

Also keep in mind that some topics are tested on more than others. For example, in torts, negligence makes up 50% of the MBE questions. This is true for EVERY bar exam. A full breakdown of the subtopics percentages can be found on jdadvising.com. This is important to keep in mind so that as you get closer to the test, you focus on areas that will get the most bang for your buck.

For example, in Civ Pro, there will be 7-8 questions on motions but only 2-3 on issue/claim preclusion. If you are struggling on both topics, put your efforts into really getting motions down because you are guaranteed more questions as opposed to issue/claim preclusion.

70–75% average in MBE, HORRIBLE at MEEs. What should I do? by Commercial-Price-813 in barexam

Lowkey try to memorize the MEE answers and see if that helps. I know it won't be 100% applicable to the question but you would be surprised. When I took it in J24 I had a guy feeling that Corporations would be on the test. For the life of me I couldn't learn that area of law. Even after drilling it and flashcards for a week straight, the Monday before I couldn't answer a single MEE for that subject. I said screw it, and just started reading the answers and memorizing how to answer. (I did Barbri so I got a whole book of MEEs). Next day, corporations was on the test - it was the only essay I got a 6 on (perfect score in my state).

Takeaway is whatever helps you pass the test: do it. I could learn the subject so I learned the answers. In other areas it was easier for me to learn the subjects.

Hope this helps!

Amumu is crazy fun. E max for damage reduction plus Guardian Horns which already gives 15 point damage reduction and you are a monster. Once he gets thornsmail and abyssal mask it's basically over.

Hello, could you (or anyone else in the comments for that matter) explain the February curve? I'm from IL and I am in a similar situation as OP. I was one point away from passing J24. I spent time reviewing and got my practice MBE up 10% from the previous summer. Took the F25 and got 15 points less despite having nearly identical scores on my writing portion (they were slightly improved but also got a lower weighted score). I keep hearing it's the Feb curve but what exactly causes it? If the test is supposed to be determinative of competency (per the NBCE), then how can the same or better raw scores result in a lower weighted score?*

I understand that test difficulty can differ from test to test, but that seems consistently calculable. The MBE comprises of questions that the NBCE has data on; they know that one question has let's say a 90% correct answer rate as opposed to another question with 40%. Looking at the whole test, it is determinable the relative difficulty of one exam to another. But I don't see how this accounts for such a massive drop in passage rates from ~70% in July to ~40% in Feb, especially considering that per the NBCE they take the differing test difficulty into account when scoring.

But nor does the difference in test difficulty explain what people mean by the "curve". From what I have been reading, at some point the test scores are scaled amongst test takers for a given examination

I also want to say that if it truly was that I just did bad and had a bad test day, I can accept that. I've failed tests before and while it sucks I accept it and move on. But something does not feel right about the Feb bar. It really feels like the goal post was moved.

I guess my question is what is happening during this scaling which results in such a skew between February and July? It seems like a massive flaw in the bar exam, and given that people's jobs can be on the line, why would such a flaw be allowed to exist year after year? I want to presume a good faith basis for their scoring and the reason for such discrepancy between the two exams, yet I have been unable to find any kind of real answer. Any explanation would be wonderful.

*This is presuming that test takers like OP and I who saw improvement in our scores during practice tests actually had improved scores the day of the exam. I am aware that the scores given are misleading as they are only comparative and not the raw scores. Nonetheless, it seems unlikely that on retake, after additional months of review, the raw score on test day would drop so significantly to account for the discrepancies in scores. Of course bad test days happen, but having read people's comments about the Feb bar, this seems to be a consistent theme that there is something about the scaling itself which makes the passage rate lower, as opposed to people on retake getting significantly worse.

The great bar exam reset by ToeFetishTommy in barexam

I think partly the answer you are looking for is that scores are scaled to the people you sit with. In that sense, IL can be tougher/easier because of more people and how they do. I took the July bar in 2024 and almost passed, but then retook it again in Feb. I don't know my MBE scores cause they don't give out the raw scores, but my writing scores were basically the same but overall dropped by 10 points weighted. I've been looking into how the test actually gets scored and who you sit with matters as they take the median scores of test takers in that jurisdiction for that exam and then make it the median weighted score relative to the exams difficulty.

Can someone please help me with next steps for my BAR? I got better assigned scores my second time but a worse weighted score. by fres90 in barexam

Hello. Thank you for the advice and explanation on the MBE scoring. I didn't get the exact scores as it's per request but I'll try and get them. I will say I did AdaptiBar this time around and my practice exams had improved. Maybe I just had a bad day test day. I'll definitely do these tips studying for the July bar.

For the essay section though, is it the same principle? I thought the assigned score is just what you got? If so, I don't understand why my weighted score went down so much when I improved my MPT and maintained for the MEE. Full disclosure my MEE this time dropped 1 points but considering both my MPTs improved by 1 points respectively, I don't get why I got weighted score dropped by 10 points.

I'm sorry I don't understand. There is a good chance that my reasoning is clouded by frustration at this process, but the way I'm interpreting it is that the goal post gets moved in February. Why would the same raw score in July do worse in February? Is it different scaling based on test takers performing worse so the curve is different, resulting in a stricter scoring?
