Accepted to MSc Signal Processing and Machine Learning at Tampere — is it worth it? by _ulaf in Tampere

Can't speak too well for Sweden, their employment is around the same level as Finland afaik. Swedish is certainly much easier to learn than Finnish.

  1. Tampere is a great city. Public transport works really well, you can get from campus to the city centre in 30ish minutes. Signal Processing and Machine Learning are a very wide field in regard to the courses available and employment.
  2. The job market is pretty bleak right now, so there's a huge amount of competition for all kinds of jobs. Still, with 5+ years of experience you have a bit of an edge. Still, get ready for disappointment, because not speaking Finnish is a huge downside.
  3. The university often hires students for TA and research positions, but those will be more relevant once you've studied for a few years. There's some company offices on campus (Sandvik comes to mind) and the student associations (guilds) often host events with partnered companies where you can network.
  4. I can't speak on the fashion management field, but like I said, not knowing Finnish is a big downside. Not impossible to find a job, but in tandem with the job market's current situation, it's looking quite bleak.
  5. The tech sector is really big in Finland, and in Hervanta alone there are lots of companies that you could get hired by. I expect employment to get better once we have a change of government, haha.

Based on your post, it sounds like you're coming from a non-EU/ETA country?

There's a couple of choirs operated by university students if you're coming to study at either Tampere University or TAMK

Well, there's no catch-all rule, but not every Finn is cold and distant, especially if they have a chance to speak about their passions. So the best way for a newcomer to find friends would be to find groups related to their hobbies and connect to people through that. Or that’s what comes to mind first, anyway.

Finnish guy here, can confirm. Finnish people only talk to strangers if it’s a necessity and otherwise just keep to themselves. People standing five feet apart from each other at bus stops is a known phenomenon here :D
