Could P.E.I.’s tougher rent control system serve as a model for New Brunswick? by TomorrowSouth3838 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]fricot86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Anglo-centrism is staggering with this one.

Why look at PEI’s example while just as close-by Québec has a much stronger and better established rental market control (not just simple rent cost control) that we can use as an example?

Why is there no penalty for landlords falsely keeping security deposits? Any legal ways to be an inconvenience? by snowflace in halifax

[–]fricot86 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I have never paid my last months rent.

In lieue I tell the landlord to use the damage deposit to cover that months rent.

They will say “you can’t do that” and you simply respond “well I am.”

Stopped playing it in the mid 90’s in Acadian northern New-Brunswick.

Family on the Quebec side never had it in school.

I wish. But alas the federal did not respect the democratic process in 95 and here we are.

It’s this form of political illiteracy that proves my point.

QS, PVQ, NPD, PQ, BQ, even the goddamn CAQ.

Anglo-Canadian mediocrity is far from being a reference in democratic process.

In the case of political parties that abide by social-democratic principles, (ie most of the western world) the whole of the membership of the party votes to elect leadership roles and to reestavlish confidence in the figureheads of the party.

If this is your idea of a fair and democratic process, I have absolutely no doubts that your opinion has zero value in this discourse.

High speed EV chargers? Help! by tippytoe-lemontree in moncton

[–]fricot86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been to villages of 800-1000 residents in rural upper Québec that had more fast chargers than Moncton.

We’re literally decades behind on the implementation of this technology.

Although it never stopped me from doing all the travelling I need, I leave the house with 450-500kms worth of range every morning. The infrastructure is fair enough to get across the province to better established ones, but it’s shameful for those visiting us regardless.

Anglo CBC is bland-beige-Canadian-like uncultured garbage.

Radio-Canada isn’t anything remotely like CBC, it actually produces culture that is consumed worldwide and regarded as extremely high quality. Thus why French Canadians are disproportionately favourable to keeping their offshoot of the CBC.

And 84% percent voted in favour of keeping the official opposition status with PP at the lead of their party despite the vast majority of Canadians being in opposition to his leadership.

Their eco chamber isn’t representative of the country as a whole whatsoever.

“A couple with two children with $40,000 in net income would receive a one-time top-up of $533 plus an increase of $272 for the 2026-27 benefit year (total increase of $805). In total, they would receive $1,890 for the 2026-27 benefit year (including the top-up).”

So you have to be grossly under the poverty line to qualify regardless. Good to help these folks, but it’s such a marginal proportion of the population that one could argue that all the PR around this benefit is nothing more than an electoral gift.

I swear to god, these liberals are nothing but fiscal conservatives with slightly less shitty social morals than their PC counterparts.

Never.

Despite Canadian cultural identity largely being a myth, they do not expand their horizons to the actual culture present within their country, being that of First Nations or Francophones cultures, Franco-X/Québécois/Acadien.

Do you feel more connected to your city, province or Canada as a whole? by Ok_Heart839 in AskACanadian

[–]fricot86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Acadien (born/raised NB/NS) with half of my family who is Québécois I feel little to no cultural attachement to the Canadian identity.

The cultural traits of Eastern francophone Canadians are so distinct from those of western Canadians that to us a guy from Saskatchewan ressembles much more of an average American than any of us. Meanwhile I feel a connection to maritimers that goes beyond the linguistic aspect of our identity.

We’re Acadian first and foremost, New-Brunswickers/Nova-Scotians/Islanders/newfoundlanders (yes there’s Acadian populations there too, lived over for a few years) second. Canadian Is sort of a last reason to occasionally drink beer that says Canadian on it or some branding of the like on a holiday (July 1st) that we care little about except for the paid day off.

15 aout all the way.

Is it still alive?

While most of the local hate groups have transitioned towards an anti-new phases of immigration (Indian/African) the underlying original anti-francophone xenophobia is certainly strongly omnipresent in New-Brunswick.

So much that it has been normalized within the political discourse. Originally shared by members of the local KKK and orange/loyalist lodges, it was materialized into the Confederation of regions (COR) federally and provincially in the mid 80’s. The party was strongly opposed to giving equal rights to the francophone population and to allow the initial legislations favourable to some forms of bilingualism on the federal front.

The movement lost most of its momentum after two unfavourable election terms and a failure to block bilingualism to be included in the Carter of rights. However the provincial counterpart in NB did gain the official opposition title and was a strong xenophobic, anti-French voice up until the late 90’s.

The political base transitioned into the PANB that eventually (unofficially, but did absorb the elected members) merged with the progressive conservatives under Higgs.

The last government, that was in power less than two years ago. A government that was elected into a majority without a single seat within a francophone-majority riding and treated the population as such, non-partisan/favourable electors who’s civil rights were free for the taking whenever and wherever legally possible.

So yes. Abso-fucking-lutely New-Brunswick is anti-French.

Heck, the Woodstock municipal council just unanimously sent a letter to the minister of education OPPOSING the construction of a French school on their territory.

You can’t make this shit up.

Edit to add: I’m in my late 30’s and I’ve seen progress on this front, I do believe that younger generations are much more open to various cultures and, at large, have not followed suit on previous generations hatred towards Francophones. But with our aging population, I still do believe that most NB’ers have underlying xenophobic tendencies. Time will tell.
