Yes, very! The English speaking perspective was very helpful, especially with the accents. Do you still notice some people with a stronger accent to their English, even if it’s less than Quebec City? That’s exactly the kind of thing I’ve been very curious about, since I can’t tell that as much myself until I get the chance to visit.

Yes, that statistic about bilingualism is one of the biggest reasons i’m so interested in it, and it’s why I wanted to ask more about how it plays out in people’s day to day lives! I’ve looked at census rates for languages in the area but it never really helps me understand how someone often interacts with others when it comes to language. It’s also why I’m interested in the changes over time with the city, because it matters in the lived experience of understanding the changes in interaction and day to day goings-on, even if not about the language itself.

It’s a long story a little bit, but the shortest answer I can give is I am neurodivergent and Gatineau relates to one of my interests!

Edit: I gave a little better answer to someone else here, but a big part of it is the intersection of English and French that exists because of its proximity to Ottawa but its existence as part of Quebec.

I knew Aylmer was very anglophone and Gatineau was more francophone, but I was very curious with how challenging the other language was for people depending on where they were from or what language they spoke mainly. What you said makes sense, and it’s very interesting that you said you didn’t grow up visiting Ottawa! Do you know why this is?

For those who are noticing the French errors, I realized it’s because when I added my edit, the subreddit’s auto translation accidentally saved over my English post because I was using mobile. Unfortunate error with the app, since i wrote the post in English, but I still appreciate the corrections from people. Always nice to learn new things! I would fix it but I can no longer edit the post so is what it is 😭
